Brake and blinker fuse keeps blowing
« on: September 01, 2015, 09:22:30 AM »
My 1998 ST1100 has just started blowing the fuse for the brake and blinkers. It started yesterday on a ride. Everything was working fine and then not. I changed the fuse and tested everything, ran the bike on the and and touched brakes and turned blinkers on and off, and everything was ok.
Then this morning riding up to Bridbane everything was working fine and then 5 minutes into the ride (to work) the fuse blew.

If anyone has had this happen how did you fix it.

thanks

Intermittent electrical gremlins are the bane of trouble-shooters' existence!

All you can do is take the plastic off carefully looking for pinched wires.  It sounds as if there's a short to earth happening when the bike is moving.  At least you can isolate it to those two circuits and try to study their wires, especially where they are out of the cable and running near the frame or engine.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Gday Sandman.

I would be checking the area under the seat where you access the lights.

I have found in the past that water has gathered and the flasher unit for my hazard lights was rusted out.

I don't know if you carry any tools in that area but there may be some exposed wiring there now.

Just a thought.

Good luck

Does your bike have cruise control?. I had a similar problem with mine, which turned out to be the cruise wiring that ran along the frame from the rear brake light switch.

It has cruise control but not electric. It is most likely a short.
I had to replace the head lights a while back (what a job) and could have done some damage to the wiring to the front blinkers.
That's the most likely place as I haven't fiddled with anything at the back, but I do take the seat off to strap in luggage when I travel overseas.
I would say Biggles is right and it's an exposed wire that is shorting out when the bike is on the move.
Thanks again for the almost immediate responses and helpful hints.

Does the fuse blow without any use of blinkers or brakes, or when using the lights.  the system that causes the failure can help locate the problem.

Thanks Brock.
I checked the brakes and blinkers in a whole bunch of combinations whilst it was on the stand and it all worked fine.
It blew again when I started riding which indicates it's a short to earth when it's moving.
But I wasn't paying attention if it was whilst I was turning or braking this morning because I thought it was under control.
When I get back I'll have a quick look for the obvious bare wire. If it's not obvious I'll stick in a fuse in and observe when it blows again and hopefully this will give me a direction.
In a past life I was an electrician (not auto) so I should be able to work it out.
I was hoping that it was a'common fault' that had an easy answer. But it appears not so.
Thanks again

Could be that it is seat related. Did you try sitting on it when you tested?
Cheers,
Gary
