I bought my 2004 ST1300A a couple of weeks ago.
-Delkevic pipes
-K&N air filter
-71,000 K's
When warm it starts first time and runs fine. But cold starts are difficult.
Here's what Ive done to try and fix the problem:
1. New fully charged battery
2. New spark plugs
3. Additive to petrol fuel injection cleaner and run full tank through.
4. Fresh oil/filter
The cold starts have improved but still difficult.
I'll add a video of the problem.
Hope you can help solve this issue please.

Does the K&N have the outer foam filter fitted? If so remove the outer filter. It could be over fueling due to the filter choking the engine.
From what I have read over the years, STs dont like K&N very much.

OOPS! What I said below is wrong. They do go out when I press Starter. It's just the small side lights that stay on. Sorry.
Forgot to mention that when I jumper my car battery to it it starts straight away even when cold.
Should the headlights go out when you press the starter? They don't on mine. Thought that if they did there would be more "juice" for the spark plugs.

OK, the K&N you showed, isnt the problem one..
If bike starts, when jump started, the your battery is suspect. Measure the voltage while cranking, if below 10 volts the battery is no good. Bike starting when warm indicates the battery has charged up while running, but the cold start problem indicates that capacity is lost after sitting overnight..
Its a relatively cheap starting point, to replace the battery.
Most STs will drop the headlight when starting, but there seem to be a few that dont.

I've bought a new battery but didn't fix the problem. I've put it on charge tonight and will try again tomorrow morning.

Cranking does appear to be a bit slow, even though you have fitted a new battery you could have a parasitic draw causing battery to discharge overnight. Check the battery voltage before cold start, should be around 12.5 to 12.7. Also check all battery connections including ground.

Thanks jd. I was just reading the service manual and it suggests connecting the battery directly to the motor to eliminate bad connections and relay. It's a bit dark here right now but will try this tomorrow. I bet the starter motor isn't very accessible :crazy

Very unlikely it’s a starter motor issue, especially since it works fine after warm up. You would have to remove a bits to access the starter including the rear shock absorber.

Thanks for the tips. In desperation to feel happy, here's what I've done:
Charged battery 15 hours
Cleaned battery terminals
Checked resistance of negative to ground
Checked battery voltages at various stages
Primed fuel pump 3 times
Yippee, happiness is the sound of a V4 engine roaring into life is a joy to hear through Delkevic pipes. I'll try again tomorrow without priming the fuel pump, fingers crossed.

Much better :like but 12.3 v is still on the low side. A fully charged new battery should show about 12.7 volts.

As the weather cools, the ability of the battery to hold charge will decrease. In a Tas winter, you would be lucky to start at all, unless you put the bike and a battery charger/tender of some type.

I've never needed one before but I do put the batteries of my bikes and cars on charge if they sound a bit tired.

Makes me wonder about the quality of the battery when they are that cheap... :think1
A decent brand name battery (Century/Yuasa) for the ST is well over $200... :o

what fuel are you using. Only use premium 98. 95 absorbs its own weight in water and some stations have more in tank than should. Also hold bike upright when starting cold. Denis.
