Windows 10 upgrade
« on: December 04, 2019, 11:03:59 PM »
Something I've been putting off for ages, but with support for Windows 7 ending in January, thought I should move to Windows 10. Plus we are converting to it at work, so thought it might be good to have one platform at home.

Now that it is installed, I can use some of it, but have a big message stating:

"Critical Error - Your start menu isn't working. We'll try to fix it the next time you sign in"

Any help on this appreciated. I've tried this with a few suggested fixes, but that is not getting the resolution.

Cheers guys

What is the build number reported in Settings>System>About?

Ok. That’s the latest. This was a popular issue with earlier builds but not so common lately.

There are a bunch of things you can try that might fix it. Pop your original error message into google. Most of them get a bit techo though, or are just plain silly.

The easiest fix would probably be to create a new user, and then reboot and log in as that user. This will create a fresh new profile for that user. You’ll probably find that the problem is gone, and you will also find that you don’t see any of your desktop icons, documents, etc. but these can be copied over from your old user profile. You will still be able to log in as the original user so there is no risk of losing anything if you try this.

Personally, I loved XP and wished it would stay forever.

Hated Vista with a passion.

Loved Windows 7, it was what Vista could-have-should-have been, and wished it would stay forever.

Hated Windows 8 with a passion. How stupid to force a PC to look like a tablet.

Now Windows-10 is what Windows 8 could-have-should-have been, and in a sense it probably will stay forever because it gets a major update every six months but never gets a new name.

Ahh. The memories.
