Brakes - nice necessary items when they work but when the gremlins get in it's not good.
There is a little known Honda warning paper circulating which advises service managers and their staff to keep a check on the front secondary slave cylinder of the 1300's. (In the floating caliper)
Was published after Honda discovered the piston was not returning and causing the rear brake pistons to stay activated.
Unfortunately with the integrated brake system it is the centre piston which has a grab at you rear disc.
Since you can't see it, the problem usually only becomes noticeable when trying the move the bike and you find the rear caliper locked to the disc.
Ride a bit further and the caliper heats up and becomes distorted and so does the rear disc.
The brake fluid being pushed out of the front can also cause a problem with the proportioning control valve.
It means a new set of pads can disappear in abt 120kms.
Then the repairs start - caliper, disc, proportioning valve seal kits front and back.
This problem has only come to the attention of ProHonda Rocklea twice.
Once when my bike locked up a few months ago and the week after they repaired mine a silver 2006 appeared with the same problem.
Steve the service manager at Rocklea sourced second hand parts for me from across the country and the bill was just short of $1000.
Who ever owns the silver one is looking at new parts.
Mine had cranked 125.000 before the problem but the silver bike is in the low 60,000's
His problem started after an emergency braking exercise in traffic I was told.
So if you're in for a service get them to check all possible movements they can on the braking system.

Good tip. Lionel's ST1300 seems to wear rear brake pads a bit too much so have to check that out.
