SO, i will keep this as brief as I can. After the bike was sitting for a few months not ridden, I got it out last week but no go. Engine would wind over, but not fire up. Had it at Honda all week. They have checked everything possible that they can. End result is that they have determined that the ECM is not powering the fuel pump. Fuel pump is ok and checks out and works when ECM bypassed. Their fault computer is also not connecting and shaking hands with the ECM to determine faults. They have spoken to many within Honda here in Aus and the general consensus is the ECM is faulty. New - $2200 and about a 5 month wait for one, and then its still not a guarantee that the ECM is the issue. Bike is a 2003 non ABS with 136k on clock. Any suggestions out there?????? Brain is hurting!! Previously ECM was giving knock sensor codes about two years ago, and it was suggested at that time the ECM might be faulty however the melted knock senor wiring was replaced and only had the knock sensor codes come up once since then. Any suggestions or ideas.

Hi DJW. Have you tried an ECU reset, as described here..... http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=11334.0 (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=11334.0)

If the bike won't start, I'm not sure how the ECU reset will work (I'm assuming the disconnecting and reconnecting the battery some time later isn't going to have any affect on whether the bike actually fires or not). I hope for DJW's sake a battery disconnect and reconnect works.

Has alll the wiring been checked for mice attack? Remove airbox and check under, mice love building nests in there. Was bike running ok prior to sitting idle for a while, if so it’s unlikely to be an ECM fault. Maybe try swapping the ECM with a friendly OzStoc member 👍

There is no difference between ABS and non ABS ECUs just a difference from 2008 onwards.
I can lend you one to test, you just pay postage to and from Perth. At this stage it has a home but that may change. Remember you will also need the key to go with the ECU.

I may have a spare ECU (and key). It does have the Knock sensor problem though, but might help isolate the problem.

I hope you/they checked the battery voltage, if battery is below 10V on crank the bike wont start.

Last year my 1300 sat idle for 5 months while Navgirl and I did a trip to the NT
When I returned bike wound over but no start I suspected low battery put on charger over night tried next day same result
Had battery tested result it A1. Put it back in hooked jumper leads to my Ute
Bike wound over for a good 5to6 minutes was just about to give up then it coffed spluttered I kept winding it backfired then started and ran ruff as for quite a while I didn’t touch the throttle until it settled down
For the next couple of starts it would wind for 30 sec or so before starting It just seemed like the starter was turning fast enough I was starting think dodgy starter then it came back to normal
started the bike last week after 2months sitting it fired instantly as normal
I have no explanation why it wouldn’t start

Maybe onto something there Rusty

Thanks all, not sure how to reply to individual messages. The bike is at the Toowoomba dealer here in Toowoomba, I would have to make the assumption they know what they are doing in regards to stale fuel, voltage drops and other obvious issues. I did give the run down on in that it had been sitting for quite a while. It is very generous of a couple of you to offer a ecm for me to fit and see if that is the problem. I will call Toowoomba Honda tomorrow and discuss the issues that are raised here and also the possibility of getting a ecm to try. As for the mouse problem, funny thing is that I have just had a mouse/rat infestation in my shed. Took me a while to resolve this issue, but when i took the cover of the bike i did see evidence that they had been inside the bike cover and therefor would assume in the bike itself, i will discuss this tomorrow as well. Thank you all for the reply's.

A loaner replacement ECM with key arrived today. Ill get that up to Honda tomorrow and we will see if it is an ECM problem or not....

Fingers crossed! :X

How did you go with this problem?. Did the replacement ECU solve anything?.

Well, its been a long journey but an alternate mechanic who was highly recommended finally looked at the bike today after a 3 month wait to get him as he is that busy. after an hour or two he calls and says you better come in and look at this. The top wiring sub harness directly under the air filter box has been completely demolished by rodents. I am happy that it was an easy find for him, very angry that the previous service agents did not find this after having my bike for 3 weeks and saying come get it as we can not solve the problem. On top of that a sensor was missing from when they put the bike back together, Spoke to them today about this and the response was less than satisfactory, in fact they told me they should have charged me more for the time they spent on it.
The ECM gave multiply codes for injectors, MAP, TPS, IAT and more. How did the previous people miss all of this????????
Anyway, end result is I am on the hunt for a top wiring harness, I will post this separately. Hopefully when i get this harness fitted it will be the only electrical damage.

Hi DJW,
Is the bike operational yet?
