Title: Check this out
Post by: HunterTodd on September 01, 2014, 06:12:59 PM
I am thinking about doing the caravan thing and was trying to figure out a a way of taking the ST.  I thought of buying a purpose built toy hauler type van but they are expensive. Then I found this gizmo below.  Appears to work a treat.

Looks good, the main problem would be to find a securing point on the STs or any full fairing bike for that matter

looked at them for my little touring project
then looked at the price tag
so made my own
same concept (sort of) different approach
tying the bike down wasnt hard but had to go up under the plastic onto the triple clamp
that was on my strom mind not the 13

Great job!  The side loading is much better because you don't have to disconnect the van to get the bike off.  Just a few questions.

Is your ute a Cruiser?  Mine is a Navara which I think might struggle with it on the back like that.

How wide is your tray? Most one tonne utes are 1.8 which I would have thought put the wheels out either side.

Does the weight right on the stern plus the towball weight of the van affect the ute handling?

Does the bike rock much when you brake?  I thought it might more than one in a north south orientation.

Man you have done a great job. Very Impressed. BTW did you do it on the knee or do you have plans you would sell??

at agquip near Gunnadah one year there was a tray back ute with a frame which went up and over the cab. Did not make sense till a button was pressed. the whole tray picked itself up and sat on the ground behind the ute. the deck was only 6" above ground. Would lift a tonne and stop anywhere in the lift. $15000. It was magic. electric hydraulic.

cruiser - ERR NO

the bike is held to the carrige by rachet straps and hauled up the ramp by an evil bay 12 volt winch
one up i strap the front via the lower tripple clamp
and the back by the grab rails
tp get it off you just power spool out the winch
just pull it down tight enough to be snug
as far as  security
the only time i was worried about it was on the gibb river road

as far as plans go i made it custom to fit my bike on the truck
but its not hard
the pictures tell the story and id be happy to slap a drawing of the concept together for you then you could adapt to your set up
all id ask in return is mountains of praise  ;-*
on the back of a 4wd ute youd have to go north south
weight isnt a problem just means with st mounted youll loose some cargo space
