24,000kms service quotes!
« on: August 09, 2013, 10:15:25 PM »
So as per my previous post asking about serving costs for the big 24,000 kms service on my 2008 Pan ST1300.  Unfortunately I wont be doing this service myself as I usually leave that for someone with more knowledge than I!

Hawkesbury Honda - $850 plus
Balmain Motorcycles - $850 to $1150
Small independent in Parramatta - $850

Its not looking too good at the moment.  Would like to get it done before our RTE in September.  Any suggestions of someone in the Sydney area? (and no I can't do it myself!).

24,000km service at Honda World in Adelaide in 2010, $627

Not that it helps answer our question, but an interesting comparison.

It's the biggest service on the St1300, valve clearance check time etc. mind you I've never heard of a Pan needing valve work at 24,000!

I have plans to do some km's soon so want it done properly.  Can't believe Frasers (where I bought the bike) aren't interested in servicing it! It's not a Harley, Ducati or BMW apparently.

I'd even pay an ozstoc member in Sydney to do it if they were able to...... Any quotes via PM please!

Valve clearance checks at 24000kms seems very premature. I know on the FJR, Yamaha recommended them at 30000 or 40000 but not many people ever had them done and even those that did, found that the valve clearances were well within spec. Actually even at 90000km they were still within spec. Seems like a bit of overkill and the manufacturers covering their backsides.

I take it that you live in the Hawkesbury somewhere, try Mick Dwyer Motorcycles at Coreen Ave, Penrith. Micks a good man and not overly expensive.

This won't be of any help either, but I just had a major service on my ST1300 before the run to Biloela.

Wasn't very happy with the last service at rising sun Honda in Townsville I think they let the apprentice do the service. I got the bike back and someone had over sprayed the left storage box with some product. It took months to clean off.

So this time I took the bike to an independent motorcycle shop called  R.H.D. In Townsville which is owned and run by a lovely lady motorcycle mechanic who everybody knows as Spanner.

All fluids including clutch and brakes and final drive were drained and flushed and a new battery installed. $750.00.

My wife's Boulevard has been in for over a week to have the forward controls modified for her leg reach for the ride to Ballarat next year, bikes ready and only cost $600 we were expecting well over a grand.

So, any Townsville folk i can recommend Spanner at R.H.D.

You could also try Western Motor Cycles, Mulgoa Rd Penrith, just south of the leagues club. It is about 20 years since I had anything to do with them but another option.
Unless you rev the bike very hard for long  periods I would get the checking of the valve clearance as a separate price and then consider if you do it or not.

There isn't much too dropping oil and changing a filter. Save the $850 for mods.

The hardest thing to do is find motavation to do the job.

$802.62 for 24,000km service at MotoAdelaide last week. $625 for labour and $177.62 for parts.

Standard service - nothing extra done.

I was quoted just over a thousand for the 48000 service.   Currently working out what I can do myself.

Yeah, my wife was quite surprised at $800 and said I should be riding more to justify the cost.

I told her that, if I rode more, I would have to get it serviced more often!

What to do??? :think1

There was a lot of discussion a while back about getting somewhere who knows our bikes to show us how to do the basics.  Changing engine oil, clutch brakes etc.  from memory the hard part is finding someone to teach us technically challenged folk.   I have followed the instructions on the site to clean the relevant tubes for an F1 engine light.  I will have to go back to seek help on brake and clutch fluid replacement and coolant replacement.   The dealer wanted over 400 just to do this bit.

Eek!  I have done all the servicing on my 13 since I bought it, and it is quite easy to work on (Self taught onbikes)  Did heaps in first week that I owned it.  I can upload my service spreadsheet for anyone who is interested.  Think it has owed me less than  $300 in servicing costs over 30k (was 7 years old when I bought it with13k on it), and most of that was when I bought it so I knew things were done properly.  Happy to guide anyone in toowoomba/lockyer valley through servicing. (Have also put stronger springs+new oil in dorks, and have done full fork overhauls old my older bikes)

Well you take it to the STealer, because you perceive that they are the Experts. The HondaShop claims to have been the main Service centre for the Police ST1300s here in WA.

My recent experience would indicate otherwise.

$730 for the 24k Service. I really have NO IDEA if they did what they claimed.

When I got it back and rode it to a RTE to Dowerin, it was p*ssing oil all over the fairings. The wheelbarrow mechanic had obviously over filled it. I gave them the opportunity to correct the fault. After they "fixed" it, the oil was BELOW the oil porthole - it was NOT visible. so I took it back again.

Pretty Basic oversight.

5K later, I have just had new tyres fitted. We discovered that the rear brakes where almost down to the metal backing. Yes, I don't like overservicing, but the pads would NOT have lasted until the next service. They should have been replaced at the 24k Service, or at least provided me with the opportunity to agree to them being replaced.

Guess what, I won't be going back to The HondaShop!

4T Oil and filter around $50 - $60 from Repco or Supacheap every 12,000 km and do it myself.

Check brake pads every tyre change; 9000 km rear, 12,000 front on average.
Change clutch/brake fluids at the same time as new pads.

Plugs will last 120,000 km or more; just regap every 30,000 km or so (or not). Iridium plugs went in (May 2014) at 162,000 - not touched since.
Final Drive is good for 30,000 km or do it every 2nd or third oil change.

The coolant was done at 150,000 (when timing belt was done) and planning to change it before summer along with a temperamental thermo switch.
Air filter was done at 191,000 so no rush for that one .

Give the side stand some lubrication every now and then.

The above I do myself; anything else like valve check, bearings (not yet needed) and fork seals I get the dealer to do.

The last valve clearance check I had on mine was at 120,000 km and was still within spec. It's over due for one now @ 200,000 km.
Forks last done July 2015.

I did all of the servicing on my 1100 myself, except valve clearances and carb balancing. I had an arrangement with a local shop to do those two jobs. I would take the bike in with all of the bodywork removed, and they would do the valves and carbs. Used to cost me between $80 to $120.
Maybe you could make a similar arrangement for the valve check?
Got a quote recently for a 24k service on my VFR800...$1080....

If anyone wants to do their own servicing make sure to check out the "How To..." Instructions and Pics for Regular Maintenance Jobs specific to the ST1300... section of the forum :grin

http://ozstoc.com/index.php?board=52.0

There has been a few guides done up to help people do their own servicing and modifications :thumbsup

If there are any guides that you are interested in that aren't displaying the pictures (thanks to the changes to Photo Bucket) just post a reply asking if the guide can be fixed as a priority.

Cheers
