3 day trip this coming long weekend
« on: February 27, 2013, 08:49:44 AM »
Hi all,
for this coming long weekend, I have a 2 night camping trip planned.
Leaving from Joondalup on saturday morning.
300km on Saturday, then camping at Lake Towerrining Saturday night.
500km on Sunday, camping at Denmark on Sunday night.
500km back to Joondalup on Monday.

total round trip around 1300kms

Saturday and Sunday will be various roads, with some great scenery.
Monday will be heading home via Albany Highway.

Speeds will be as per speed limits, this is about enjoying the scenery and about going on a long ride, NOT about speed.

I will be camping and taking my tent, airbed, food, cooker (can boil water to make a coffee) with me.
There will be plenty of opportunity to stop for lunch, etc along the way, and the evening stops will be in camp sites with showers etc.

Anyone who wants to come along is welcome as long as all the above sounds good to you.

If you are interested, contact me through here or on 0401291087

Peter (ST1100)

Sounds like a good weekend Peter. Unfortunately I have other plans. Speed limit run a great idea especially seeing I think it will be double points for the long weekend.

i know its late notice for this type of thing.
but when my better half said "you havent been on one of those motorbike rides for a while, why dont you go this weekend?", it took me all of 15 minutes to have the plans sorted, campsites booked, etc.

Piglet, mate, "possible shower" isn't fine, "fine" means Sunny!  :-++

As to the pics, sign yourself up for a free Photobucket account, upload your pics there, then start your post, and flick back and forth between Photobucket and the OzSTOC post and copy and paste the individual links into the post,  eh voila, done and a lot better resolution than the scrappy little things the website allows you to post!
Cheers,

Whizz,

You're talking about here in the West.

A "possible shower" means a drop or two MAY reach the ground?

"Fine" means nice riding weather, not too warm etc.

"Sunny" means reasonable riding weather but a bit bright.

"Hot" means STAY AT HOME OR TAKE THE CAR.

Above is the compressor I use (a $30 air compressor that I ripped open and threw away the plastic casing so all I have left is the little electric motor and the air compressor bit) which can pump my tires from flat to correct pressure in about 30 minutes. A "topup" takes 10 minutes max. The right pic is the fused and switched cig lighter socket wired to the battery. Both are under the seat with tools and puncture repair kit.

Dwellingup rest stop.

Road to Darkan.

Lake Towerinning camp site.

... bad hair day?

Lots of water skiers on the lake ... 630am

Graphite road heading towards Manjimup from Nannup

Picturesque rest stop en route to Walpole... until 35000 flies found me (killer biting flies)

Denmark River. The campsite was about a 30 second walk from this view.

Hope these photos get thru ok.
Will do a "proper" ride write up next.

For those on the East Coast,

That picture of the creature in the red t-shirt gives you some idea of the type of wildlife that lurks in the forested areas of the West.

Their appearance improves as the day goes on but at first light they are everywhere.

On awakening, most are observed to wander towards a wooded area and, with their backs to the campsite, they appear to gaze into the woods for about 30 seconds, where on cold mornings clouds of steam appear before them, after doing a short 'shoulder-shake' they return to their nylon caves.

They re-appear a short time later and if you are brave enough to attempt to communicate with one you may receive a grunt or a noise that sounds similar to 'G'day'. Their communication skills improve greatly after they've drunk several mugs of coffee.

These creatures are quite harmless but, due to their appearance, tend to up your heart-rate on first encountering them.

PS:  Looks like you had a good time Piglet. Hope there weren't too many of those creatures near you.

I wouldn't take the risk of going anywhere near one!
Is there a female variety or are they hermaphroditic?
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

No-one really knows................................ At dawn they all look the same, however some do disappear further into the woods (with a small bag in their hands?) and hide behind bushes. It is thought that these one's light small, short lived fires, as there have been sightings of steam/smoke in their vicinity, which they douse prior to emerging from behind said bushes.

After re-entering their cave, they re-emerge resembling unhappy female humans. VERY ODD, as it can take them up to 1 hour to accomplish this transformation.

They commence to undertake reorganising everything and everybody within sight, including the loading of the motorcycles they perch on the rear seat of. They then appear to go through some type of ritual which involves much waiving of arms, pointing in numerous directions, alighting from the motorcycle (after the male rider has been required to dismount to enable her to do so), disappearing once-more into the woods, again lighting a small, short-lived fire, before re-emerging, inspecting the area, that the now disassembled and packed portable nylon cave previously occupied.

The male rider is then instructed, by the female, to stub-out his cigarette, throw out the remaining soft drink he was consuming, get on the bike (after she has taken up her position in what appears to be the 'Pilot's' seat) and stop wasting time. They then disappear down the road/track with the female still waving her arms and issuing instructions to the rider.

It is the general consensus that these 'females' are best avoided whilst undertaking such adventures.

I SHOULD ADD THAT I HAVE NEVER UNDERTAKEN THIS TYPE OF EXPEDITION, NOR HAVE I ENCOUNTERED THESE 'FEMALES' TO WHICH I REFER....................... I AM ONLY RELATING WHAT I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY OTHERS.

Very incisive field report on the female of the species.
Sounds horrific.  No wonder most of the ones you see are on the back of Harley Davisons with males whose clothes are shredded.
