There's got to be a few good yarns here....
I'll kick it off.....
How I became "Diesel".....
Okay - so we know I chucked a gutfull of Diesel in my bike one day....
Here is the tragic story (with pics)....
I had organised a latte run for a few fellow ST1300 and ST1100 owners. And they came in great numbers.... from the Gold Coast, Brizvegas, and even Bundaberg. I had 13 ST bikes to cater for in the end.
Anyway - the meeting point was Samford Village, but the Bundy crew wanted to stay at Caboolture the previous night to ride down there with me. "No wukkas" I thought as they were unfamiliar with directions to the start point.
This is where the beginnings of the rot set in....
As I rocked up to my regular filling station (BP Morayfield), I saw Jinxy and waved whilst pulling in. My 'usual' bowser was taken, so I picked another BP Ultimate bowser, and continued my salutations to my guest.

You can see that if distracted... the worst can happen.
Anyways, I filled as we yibbered about his journey down etc etc, and set off for the meeting point.
Around 15 k's into it, I started to notice a delay from throttle on to feeling the power. This progressively got worse the further I went. Puffs of smoke also started to emanate from the exhausts, and I had that 'oh sh*t' feeling as there was a few hundred clicks to travel that day, and my bike was never anything less than totally reliable!
Anyway - made it to the start point, greeted all the riders, had the first morning brew, laid out the rough plan and then mounted up to leave.
My bike only just started, coughed, weased, smoked more and more, then died. I thought I'd dropped a valve or something.
I had to wave everyone off on the ride that I had organised and was ride master of.
I was then left to call the towey and go home in the truck with my tail between my legs.

I learned a terrible lesson that day to pay attention.
We dropped her off to the Honda shop (still thinking the motor may be rooted). After a while we all worked out the problem. I called the servo to see what flavour was on pump 13, and she confirmed.
Amongst all the devastation and disappointment of missing out on the ride, was a little feeling of elation that it was only me being a dickhead and NOT an engine failure.
Funny thing was, later, as I was helping out the trouble n strife in the garden (in fact I was pooper scooping at the time), I thought to myself... "look at me... shovelling sh*t instead of belting through some of Australia's nicest twisting roads to pubs with a great mob!" DOH!
Anyways - it cost me $300 all up - $150 to the STealership for draining etc, and $150 towing.
All is good now and I certainly learnt my lesson. But you all know what the lads are like... as of that moment I became "Diesel Dave" shortened to Diesel.
Also, with all these Euro cars and 4WD's using diesel fuel, the pumps are as 'normal' as possible. They used to be segregated - but now are integrated into the bowser layout too because of their popularity.

Anyway - this is why I will NEVER do that again. I'm all cured!
Hope it saves someone some $$$ and plenty of stress too.
The three main contributors to this were:
1. Distraction. Had a fellow rider grabbing my attention which left me not concentrating on the bowser enough;
2. Similar Labels & diesel bowser integration. Being distracted stopped me properly identifying the 'diesel' bit after the 'BP Ultimate' bit (and the colours are similar too - dark, dark blue for premium, black for diesel) ALSO - diesel pumps don't sit over there in the corner by themselves any more - they are just another pump in the row; and
3. Unlike a car, the diesel nozzle still fits in the motorbike filler hole. A car's filler is necked down and I would not have been able to put the nozzle in to the filler. On a bike - this is possible.
Vigilance is the easy answer to ward this off.

I picked my own years ago. Saaz is a type of hop used in the best pilsners. I was into brewingand establishing a brew club in Canberra when I went online (early 90s) on things like icq and chatrooms, so me an a mate took up various hop names. Fortuntely it is not taken on most bike forums, but it is at many other places. It is amazing how simple 4 letters confuse people when I give my email address..meaningless combinations of letters and numbers don't seem to present such a problem.
Supposedly it is slang for gay in South America (so I have gotten some interesting messages some places!) or something like melodic sound of the wind in arabic.
And I first met the now infamous Diesel at the Euston FarRride mentioned.

I used to be known as Walton or Wally. Now I'm simply known as John Boy. You know, from the Walton's? Believe it or not, I've never watched an episode. I'm probably not old enough. :fp

When I was young and dumb and a lot fitter than I am now I was known for being quick to get out to my aircraft when it returned from a trip, it was said that I would 'whizz' out to the plane, hence the dumb name. Haven't used in many years but needed something to use here, this being a fairly public place, and when I was signing up it sprung into my mind and it seemed to fit the bike mentality, so Whizz it is.
Not as bad as one of the guys at work who's nickname is 'Backfatter' because they reckoned every time he returned from a detachment he 'came back fatter'

Years ago I was working a shitload :CB-- and had a fair bit of disposable income and no wife/girlfriend.
As I had all this money and little time to spend it, I started to buy a fair bit of crap >:()
A lot of the time I would buy things only because they were shiny and had cool lighting (Blue neon ect.) :runyay
As a result the guys at work started to call me Shiny and replaced my name around the office with (misspelt) Shiney.
And there you go the origins of Shiney :thumb

It was bestowed upon me by a mate Des or "wingman" on the FarRiders site because we called him "Master".
When on rides Des would impart pearls of wisdom to other riders so he called one of us "Grasshopper" and I was "Locust"... not your average pest...
But now I tend to get called Wingboy :whistle

Its my job really - I deliver those filthy stinking smelly thank god I don't smoke anymore HOW much did you say I want a pack of twenty cuz im cutting back yeah i gave it away for 2 days GIVE ME my goddam smokes before I poke ya eyes out whats the cheapest you got today sorry mate I only have coins umm I'm 20 cents short items to pubs, clubs, shops, foodlands, petrol stations. You name it. I walk in the front door and they run screaming out the back yelling it's the Smokeguy cuz I want ya money hunny. By the way I'm not a rep - just a delivery boy :)
What a job - wouldn't give it away for quids. Soooooo Smokeguy kinda stuck.

I got mine years ago when I started riding. Maddog is what I got, from doing burn outs and throwing fire crackers while riding the bike. Thing you do when you are young and silly. Now I've turned 50 I thought it was time too grow up.

My first car was an EB Falcon, and it had some rust. After a while it had some more rust. RustyEB became a name I could remember and nobody else had.
Some think it's because of my Red hair, but since it started falling out that's not the coments I get now.

my nick name was endowed apon me by my Dad many years ago when I was a little lad of about 5. I was born in Ireland and we were not too well off.
Mum would make a big pot of broth to make vegetable soup which we ate often, with potatoes of course. This was made by boiling a pigs trotter in the pot until the meat came off the bone and became part of the broth.
The pigs trotter were call hobnobs in Ireland and I used to love picking at the left over bone to get the last of the meat. My Dad nick named me Hobnob and it has stuck ever since.
I shortened it later in life to Hobs as using Hobnob has had too many queried looks and too much explaination of other connotations.

Well I really looove Gadgets, I am really impressed with the latest technology and I'm an Electronics/Calibration Technician at work so it kinda came naturally.
I've had several other nicknames at various times in the Army, but they didn't really stick except for those who knew me then.

Well.......I was originally known as Tazziebaz, :) which was a combination of where I now live (Tasmania) and my christian name (Barry or Baz, for short)...............then I had a slight misshap, didn't I, and unfortunately I posted a report of what happened on this site, and then a certain 6'4'' banana bending smart ar#@ got hold of it, didn't he!! and my name changed overnight to COUCH!! :cuss
For those who don't know, I was making a very slow uturn (idle speed) at a T junction when I elected to travel over a very short stretch of grass that appeared to be dry and solid...............well it turned out to be dry on top but had a couple of inches of soft ground (mud) beneath the surface.....needless to say, although my bike approched the grass totally upright, as soon as my back wheel hit the grass, away it went, and I was down before I had time to take my feet of the foot pegs. :crazy The footpeg actually closed up on my foot and although I was wearing boots, I thought I'd broken it for a time. Fortunately a vehicle travelling past saw it all happen and they came back and gave me a hand in lifting it, which I doubt I could have done in the MUD.
Bugger.........here I am now re-living it all again!! Hence the name "Couch"....meaning a type of grass I guess.
For those of you yet unnamed souls.............beware, Diesel is always on the lookout! You just never know what you might end up with.

I forgot that 'Itchi' means 'One' in Japanese (I have a Japanese friend who taught me to count to 5 ), therefore, some smart@$# put 'One' and 'Nacker' (as in Nut) together and the rest is history.

Hey! I was lucky enough to have Baz Couch Grasshopper cook a barbie for Mrs Diesel and myself and you should have seen his Ninja skills with the meat!!!!! Couch is also the ONLY OzSTOC Member to be 1 thousand five hundred METRES ABOVE the ground towed behind a BOAT!

He would need an airways clearance from Flight Traffic Control just to go out getting towed by his boat! :eek
Maybe 15 metres Diesel? That's a manageable bit of rope. There isn't a paraglider big enough to support 1.5 kilometres of rope.

Fifteen hundred feet my friend :crazy.........................a demonstration flight using a 19ft wingspan Rogallo Wing (hang glider) at Lake Kurwongbar, Brisbane, at the 1974 Australian Water Ski Championships, towed behind a skicraft driven by Charlie Smith and witnessed by a few hundred. At the time the highest flight under tow in OZ, and very likely still is. I used two 800ft polyprop ropes joined together and I took off from one end of the lake, it only took me a few minutes to reach fifteen hundred feet after which time I released the rope and glided safely (thank god) down to terra firma with a few tricks thrown in on the way down. I also did many kite flying demonstrations for Keith Williams at Seaworld on the Gold Coast, and on the Brisbane River at the conclusion of the Warana Parade (area now called Southbank), including night flights with small lights attached to my kite, although those flights were restricted to 500ft. Two of my fellow flyers and myself were the first ever to hang glide in Queensland. I went on to compete in 5 Australian Water Ski Kite Flying Championships after which time I decided to give it away while the going was good.
Unfortunately a few of my friends were not so lucky....RIP John Ogden, Frank Murray (brother of gelignite Jack Murray), Bill

PS: Biggles, we flew under tow almost every week of the year for 5 years at heights between 350 and 1000ft but never had clearence from any Airway Authority to do so, I recall one day when flying at 1000ft at Atkinson Dam we had a light lane fly under the kite...........frightening to say the least!

Obviously well OCTA (Outside Controlled Airspace). The closer you are to an airport, the lower the Control zone. The Brisbane River would be under Brisbane Airport control, hence the 500' maximum.
What you describe is a different scenario to the conventional parachute tow that boats do, which max out at around 200'. Hence the scepticism.

Hey Biggles...........they hadn't even thought about towing parachutes behind boats when we were flying kites!
I did fly once on the Brisbane River after the Warana parade (similar to Melbourne's Moomba) on 1000ft of rope...starting on a small concrete pier next to the old Victoria Bridge and I only released the rope when the boat went under the Captain Cook Bridge, I then flew out over the buildings and the Vic bridge before landing in the water next to a small jetty. There was a couple of thousand people there that day. They were very exciting times!!..............now I get my fix from riding my ST1300!!

en to moongrowl, monrowly foncooloo , and lots of others over the years till we get to growly. so i can thank Diesel for and my "mates" . i have many many friends who dont even know my real name is Paul and their kids just know me as growly.
so there you go :butt . and just to clear the air, the original reason for the name is very undeserved.

For those who don't know - Growly was the guy on the Trike at the Nambucca Heads FarRide AND the guy on the Boulevarde at the National OzSTOC Meet at Blackheath.
Looks like he might join the ACT Region OzSTOC ride meeting at the Robertson Bakery.

My initials are ROC and at school this was natually converted to rocky. In the 70s I worked for The Rural Bank and when transferred to Hay NSW the people did not know my last name so thay put my nickname to together with Rural and thus was born rockyRural. :13Candy

Leethal came from Lethal Lee which a speedway commentator named me when racing... not that i was killing anyone, just that my driving was lethally fast :-) I've proudly worn this moniker for years!
And yes, new to this forum and looking forward to getting to know you all. Just bought my '98 ST1100 here in SA and can't wait to do some miles on a bike again. It's been 6 years since my last confession (bike!)

years ago when i was a lad of about 12, i was working on a dairy farm back in scotland, we had started using cb radios and i had to find a handle, so working with cattle my handle became cattleman, years later i ended up as a truck driver still on the cb, but in scotland a slang name for a cow is a coo, now one of the old guys that was showing me the ropes, his name was auld bunnet, changed my name from cattleman to cooman, still the same animal but with the scottish lingo applied, and ive been known as cooman for a lot of years now.

When I started using the internet I found for some reason nobody wanted to use their real name so I needed an "handle" I was on a dog handling course with the police at the time and opted for topdog. That was taken so I adapted the theme and came up with alphafang. It stuck, many call me alpha...many call me worse :wink1.

At 6'6" (200cm to the younger ones,) and in the olden days very skinny, how could I be anything but Stretch? Conveniently I have ridden my ST for over 10 years, but I resist the urge to be STretch, the 1100 on the end is probably fairly obvious to you lot. I have added it to the nickname as an identifier when on the net.

Bloody Hell Roper! I just posted that and trying to get around to doing a few other things here as well, finally sat down and joined. Yes, I remember you, saw your picture on the forums a little while ago. The problem was a stuffed alternator. One of those things that should not happen when you just pick your bike up from a service. $980.00 later and we can ride again. Thanks for the hand that day, fate can be amazing. Did you get the cable put to good use?

I started to research the family history a couple of years ago. My grandfather was Alsatian and when I looked up a site it had the information that Huard, my surname, is Old French for Owl so I have used The Owl for a while now.

A lifetime of gaming.
Mech Warrior is a term for a pilot of a Battlemech (a massive walking war machine) in the futuristic fantasy game BattleTech. Back in the 80's it was a board game, these days it's played on all manner of platforms.
I loved the game and since "Mechwarrior" was already taken when I registered online to play MechAssault I've been known as TheMechwarrior for roughly a decade online with a good number of those years as an admin for a couple of the largest gaming communities in Australasia.
I also played competively as well...not always well...but with great enthusiasm :runyay
Mainly playing Battlefield 2, Joint Operations, Battlefield 2142, Battlefield Heroes, EVE Online, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Battlefield 3, Call of Duty 4, Call of Duty Black Ops, Diablo III and many others.
Now with a toddler and a newborn I have little to no time for online gaming so for stress release I've returned to my beginning...2 wheels. :beer

The only online game I really got into was Earth and Beyond. It was the only way I got to spend any time at all with the (now ex)husband. He still uses nicknames from that game on just about everything.

Online gaming is playing with, or against people around the world in a computer game of many types or sorts, before I had kids I was a mad gamer, and at times could play for 16 hours a day, it may sound like a waste of time, ant at times it was, but I am don't sleep as it is, so you have to do something to kill the time lol
I only got into bikes really after I had kids, it is more constructive, and obviously more social to, I gave up hard core gaming prob about 4-5 years ago now at a guess
Now instead of gaming I have all you fine people to keep me entertained!

My handle is quite simple and fortunately has nothing to do with personal hygiene. The young daughter of a friend of fine called me "Stinky Pete", the name of the prospector in Toy Story, when she found that my name was Pete. Like shit on a blanket, it stuck.

I got my nickname from the boys at work, they call me "Abe" after Abraham "Abe" Jay-Jedediah Simpson II (Grandpa Simpson) from the show "The Simpsons". Hence the name "Abe" on both sides of the bike now, thanks to a mate (left the bike unattended and didn't notice the stickers till the next day).

When I was coming back from Melbourne on the ST I dropped the bike at a standstill in Koo Wee Rup (the sun was in my face at 445am going to a trackday and I put my foot in the only drain on the street while dismounting). I still did the trackday on the ST! First track day ever, so no epic lean / kneedown for me.

After that little off, the bike developed a misfire thanks to an intermittent fault in one of the spark plug leads. Hence STutter.

My nickname has generally been RJ. 'J' being my middle initial for James. However, with the advent of computers, two letter names don't compute on most systems, so it got extended out to RexJ, just to make the ... computer world happy.

Gateman...or Gatey came about because I was a boundary rider on the dog fence at Hamilton Gate on the QLD/ NSW border.
Its a bloody isolated place and well the go was to TAX tourist 4x4's and see if you could score a paper or chocolates or...beer.
The publican at Hungerford would prime up some tourist with a line about paying the Gateman and it went on from that. Over time the name got shortened to Gatey ...cos if its left open I'm gone :rd13

As some of you maybe aware , i have been changing my forum name a bit lately.
Long story short, the final incarnation struck me like a thunderbolt today whilst getting a haircut.
The nice lady dumped a fistful of hair in my lap & proclaimed it was very thick but mostly silver.

The main title i have on most forums is Surveywa as I have a Surveying company in Gosnells WA. This however is now going to change to a nickname I have had for many years that my brother in law gave me and it is WOMBAT. :eek So there it is something to do with eating foliage or it could be short and stout :grin anyway i will get around to changing the forum details and sending for a shirt. I got Snake whilst working near Kalgoorlie WA back in '91. Originally it was 'Snakebite' as I got bitten by a death adder whilst working in the bush and after spending a cpl days in hospital the guys gave me the name when I got back to camp. It didn't take long to get shortened down to snake and has stuck with me ever since.
At the time even tho I had lost all feeling in my left leg from the bite I was more scared of the hospital staff due to the fact that they had to watch a video on how to inject anti-venom which I could see from my bed. Didn't instill a lot of confidence in me.

OzSTOC Forum has only been running a bit over 2 years, but thanks to Streak Diesel and the crew for setting up
such a wonderful Forum. I have been riding ST1300 for about 18 months and been on the FORUM for a bit over 12 months

Most of my life I have been referred to as "Aids". Back in the mid eighties, and working in the Medical profession it didn't seem to be appropriate to yell Aids! if my help was needed, so everyone just stopped using my nickname.
In the last 20 years I was involved in importing sports cars from Japan and my business was "OzSupra" and I used the handle in all correspondance.
Recently, on this forum it became obvious to me that OzSupra was not appropriate for a username so I came up with an acronym that I feel suits me. To Old to Give a Sh*t or TOTGAS.

My nick name ...... it has been a long time ago I got than name and the details escape me but :think1 I seem to recall when I was a younger lad working in heavy industry as an unskilled labourer I was asked to pass over a particular tool .... now I had grown up as an expat kid and was not really comfortable with tools and their names.
"pass me that left handed reverse rotating three pronged doohicky ( probably a wrench or something in reality) tool" says the tradie ..... I pass him something so unrelated to the tool he was wanting that a long sting of expletives rang forth from his beareded (and very scary) mouth with a memorable quote being " your as usful as a f&*cking spanner banging in a f&*king nail".
Thereby I was called spanner and I have kept it as my moniker for all forums and clubs ( apart from HHH ).

Just thinking about a few of the meetings I've attended and I thought I'd clarify how Sabie is pronounced.
So the name came from Sabastian and shortened to Sabie. Sabie was a little dog I had that I was very close to and was my best mate. So it's pronounced as Sabby.
And for those that know, it's not the model of a Honda Motorcycle.... ;-*

I bought a new 1962 Harley Davidson FLH Electra Glide.
It was a total lemon.
For the 15 months I owned it, it spent 11 months in and out of the Harley workshop.
I sold it and bought a 1964 Honda..... at least I didn't have to tow it, or push it, or trailer it to get home.
The other Harley friends called it a Scooter, and I have had that nickname now for 50 years.

That night Ed had the then, newly discovered by the general TV viewers in the USA, comedian 'Flip' Wilson as his guest.
My 'friends' considered me just as crazy in real life as Flip made out to be on TV.
We had the same surname and that nickname stuck from that night on.
(previous nicknames related to VERY rude / nasty / extremely vicious sorts of things - even though I was a perfect angel)

The RTE on the 8th, Mooloolah Cafe is the destination. How you get there is up to you.
Closer to the date, someone might put up a meeting point for the ride there. I'll probably head up Old Gympie Road all the way to Landsborough and then up Tunnel Ridge Rd to Mooloolah or I might go via Woodford and Peacheaster on the way there and come back via Gympie Rd.
Once there, it is not uncommon for small groups of people heading in the same rough home direction (sometimes even the long detour home) to ride together.
As a lunch RTE, the long road there and short one home is not uncommon, unless your name is saaz. :grin

Hi I'm Jozen!
Called myself that on account of my proper name being Joe and Zen on account of that classic book on motorcycle travel and the journey, both inner and outer, that bikes takes us on...Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.
I love my bike, and have clocked up nowhere near as many miles as I would have liked to by now...but I'm still working on it!
Leave you with a story...riding back from Esperance, WA with a group of mates on you beaut sports bikes when the sun disappeared and the rain kicked in. We still kept up the pace (a little over the recommended speed limit!) but when we arrived in Albany there was a bunch of drowned kittens on sporties, and one guiltily dry and quite untired ST owner on another! Could have ridden for another 6 hours no worries!!
They are great bikes that attract great bike enthusiasts! Look forward to seeing you at the National Rally in WA in March!!

Got the bug from my father at 16 yo. He used to race at Roley park speedway (dirt track then) on a Ariel Square four
I moved to Queensland in 2001, driving a Holden VR Caprice, Number plate "Draco7" from the movie "Dragonheart" once here as we have to do I had to change my plates to QLD plates, in Adelaide that plate was $306.00 for 1 year, so i asked to have the same plate BUT in a Qld plate (shock horror) 1 year cost $1,200.00.
Thus i liked the nickname "Draco" but with a 7 attached

Don't think that's it but just another grab for cash as when you sell the vehicle as your gonna swap the plates back over anyway (another fee in SA).
Plates can be stolen while your vehicle is parked anywhere which happened to one of my cars. Made the report to the police after I finished work and got the plates back after a week or two. They were found about half a k away from where we parked our cars for work.

Hi all
Mr2u is self appointed after a line in a movie (Cant remember what movie now) as all my childhood nicknames id'e rather forget.
The Guy turned and said "And that's Mister! to you", after being addressed by just his surname.
I call my ST1300 MRE as in Mister E or Mystery due to the fact that it has no badges or markings on it and is wrapped in Carbon Fibre, very mysterious looking.

My recommendation would be to use a quality Wrap, Like 3M and not the Cheap stuff like i did. You will get a much better Finnish and Result.
This was just a "proof of concept" for me and i will be doing it again in 3M.
3M is about 4 time more $$.
My total for materials was only about $60, Used about 4m x 1.5m of Wrap, and about 4 or 5 hours all up in time.

I have been here before but not for many many years. I am the "Jinxy" referred to by "Diesel" (Dave) in his amusing story.
Spent 34 years with Qld Police and became what was known as a "Shit magnet". Every shift , every time there was something happening.
People at work just started calling me "Jinxy". Some never knew my first name and the name stuck and my Black Aura still exists.

Many years ago I was into remote control racing cars. I used to always put Sponsorship stickers on them from Japanese company Calsonic Kansei. So I got the nickname Calsonic. I have used it for everything for the last 20 or more years.

My rider AKA was/is Cookie First thing I did in 1988 After Joining Army Reserves as a truckie, not qualified to drive so was asked to cook for the unit as the real cook was not on exercise.

Not Scandinavian, Mostly Germania, Swedish and Dane from my father's side and Irish on my mother's.
