Engine vibration
« on: March 27, 2015, 09:22:34 PM »
Hi all,
looking for some help with My ST1300. I love the bike and have owned it for 9 years and pampered it.
It has developed a vibration starting around 2800rpm and getting slowly worse the higher the rpm climbs.

If I accelerate quickly the vibration is accompanied with a growl, the growl I can live with the but vibration is numbing.
If I pull the clutch the vibration stop which tells me is engine related.

Have done the balance shafts, throttle sync , even had it back to Honda who said, " yeah some of them do that "

The bike has 55,000 klms , new tyre, wheel bearings , hub bearings anything I thought would cause it but to no avail.
What I would like to do is have some one else ride it to see if its just me or is it really worse than others

Im in Melbourne if anyone can help , It fix or sell and I dont know what else I want to buy

No they don't!

Have you pulled plugs to check every cylinder is firing?

Increasing vibration with increasing revs, sounds like something is out of balance..

Perhaps a small piece has broken off a clutch plate... Or first try redoing the balance shafts

 Thanks Guys ,
I agree , something is out of balance. I do warm to the idea of a clutch plate , though the clutch works faultlessly , makes the usual grumble out idle with the clutch out though.

I had adjusted or replaced the following :

Balance shafts - adjusted 3 times, ( once by Honda , twice by me )
Valve clearance - twice
Starter valves - twice ( once by Honda , once by me )
Oil grades , including Honda GN4 , Motul 15w 40, Shell Advance Synth 15w 50
All wheel and hub bearings replaced
2 new tyre sets ( Dunlop and Bridgestone )

Open to any other ideas, I really love the bike and it works for me.

The vibration seems worse above 2800rpm  when accelerating in 3rd and 4th , but this maybe just the variation in gearing

Thanks for any help

Have you done a search in the USA STOC?

http://www.st-owners.com/?

There's even more info there than here, believe it or not!

Their search box is right at the top right.  A quick try turned up quite a few threads, e.g.

My ST13 also developed a vibration, feels like going over a cattle grate... Only started after I replaced the rear tyre with a Metzeler Z8, and turns out it is a very common problem with that tyre.... It doesn't sound like it is related to your issue, but if you Google it, you will see...

I have recently blown a universal joint in the drive, which showed up as a speed related vibration through the footpegs pegs, and a heavy growl as the suspension unloaded when exiting an undulation.  See  http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=10046.0    Pulling in the clutch would change the load on the UV joint and may change how it is felt or heard.

I'd be finding a different mechanic.
