Vic RTE Ideas for 2016
« on: June 17, 2014, 08:31:16 AM »
I have volunteered to be Ride coordinator for VIC and to keep the RTE threads up to date, try to come up with a few RTEs for next calendar year starting Jan 1st, carry some OzSTOC merchandise and help out where I can.

So OzSTOCers:
    What ideas have you got?
Where would you like to go, that you haven't been before?
Where would you like to return to?
What over nighters do you think could be interesting/entertaining? (Tungamah again? do you want that as an annual event?)

Looking forward to hearing some ideas.

Thanks

Marcus,

RTE or overnighters?

........
Potential Overnighters. Metung, Mallacotta, Mildura, Mount Beauty?

Metung - okay for an overnighter, but not an RTE for me (stretching my comfortable daily km limit - around 600km for me)

Mallacoota - another Metung, but further away.

Mildura - definitely an overnighter, someone (in the SA or NSW thread?) mentioned Balranald, that would be a good tri-state get together desination.

Mt Beauty - a great destination, as is any thing in the VIC / NSW high country, ie. Bright, Beechworth  - great breweries there, Tallangatta, Walwa, Tintaldra, Corryong - one of the best chicken parmas, Omeo - great loop ride, Bombala, Tathra - worth a two night stay), but these are all one or two overnighters for me.

And then there's:

South Gippsland - Foster, Yarram,

Otway Coast - Apollo Bay, Port Cambell, Port Fairy - someone mentioned Nelson

Western VIC - Halls Gap, Nihill - midway between Adelaide and Melbourne

Oh, the listed is almost endless.
Cheers,  Williamson (AKA Michael)

Great suggestions, yeah I think the idea I'm aiming for is maybe 1 a month, keeping in mind March is national rally so limit it to maybe two overnighters and the rest day rides?

Thoughts, suggestions?

 Nice one Marcus :clap

Any RTE in Vic that sees us riding within a 100 miles of a Beechworth Bakery gets my vote  :thumbsup

Yackandandah is also a good destination in Vic and a side trip to Allans Flat Strawberry Winery is worth it.

I haven't been there, but so many people I've met from Melbourne swear by a trip to the Dandenong Ranges.
Cheers,

Tis difficult I think to do a day ride RTE in Vic in winter on account if it days rain it is uncomfortable just for a days ride and the days are bit short. But I'd be up for an over nighter if overly wet, say at a pub, anywhere :-)

There is a Pub somewhere on the Kiewa Valley Hwy which has an open fire, which was always a great place to visit on the way to or from the Falls Creek snowfields.  Lots of beautiful roads around there too.

RTE?   Mentioned previously, 600km is about my daily limit.   That generally means anywhere within a 250km radius from home, which assumes around 50km extra taking a scenic, more interesting route (Hendo, Nigel, this does NOT mean gravel, dirt or slippery clay!!!), eg. somewhere in the red circle:

IMHO the destination has got to be on, or at the end of a sealed road, and  have a good pub.  Whilst that still leaves lots of good destinations, it immediately rules out some destinations like Kevington and Woods Point (gravel road) and Noojee (no pub) and Tolmie (last visit I could not get a meal).  I'm sure there are other locations that would fit my criteria.

Overnighters?  In addition to my RTE criteria, the pub or nearby camping ground must also have good or better accommodation, eg. pub rooms or cabin accommodation, especially if some of the ladies are wanting to ride with us, or even ride alone.

In recent years I've had good stays at (generally in clockwise order around the state so as I can list as many as I can remember), Wye River, Warrnambool, Port Fairy, Camperdown, Hamilton, Horsham, Ararat, Ballarat, Maryborough, Castlemaine, Bendigo, Echuca, Warracknabeal, Wedderburn, Shepparton, Benalla, Wodonga, Albury, Corryong, Walwa, Bright, Myrtleford, Omeo, Khancoban, Jamieson, Alexandra, Marlo, Metung, Orbost, Bombala, Metung, Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Bruthen, Maffra, Yarram - I might I have missed a few.

Cheers,  Williamson (AKA Michael)

An overnighter near Yarrawonga and a few winery tours could be the go.

OK........................... RTE.s Vic . First thing QLD wont work, sorry! :eek. Williamsons (aka Michael) thoughts and Ideas are great. Perhaps look at an RTE, say every 4 to 6 weeks  and a Overnight-er every 3rd trip . Perhaps a O/N in the guts of winter say in July? That will break the journey if the weather is ordinary! So after Annual Rally, in March (Toowoomba) look at April/May as an RTE then June/July as the Winter O.Night, then onto  August, Mid September/October rolling into Early November Mid December. Then possibly mid Jan/ Early Feb to bring in the new year, and leading  into the Annual Rally again?

Not really fussed on where I  ride cause, I enjoy the experience and company , but be mindful of distance. Should say 600k,s for the day return be enough? Or then it becomes a Overnight-er? Anyways thems just my 2 bobs worth. Fyi quite often run up thru the Dandenongs, up Mountain Hwy, thru to Sassafras then either left to Montrose  or right to Upper Gully and home. Other than the tourists its a great run.  :wht11 :wht11

Mornin' Marcus et al...

Jest aside about Qld, there are some really are some good ideas up above.

I think you should just post a few dates and places and see who turns up. I know when I started a Ulysses group / branch many years ago I started with a 'drive-to' get together for an evening pizza and a beer. From that a 200 to 300km Sunday ride, within a short radius (like Williamson has drawn), though only 4 to 8 bikes fronted and after a while word got about and it soon took on a life of its own to a branch of around 280.

In many ways we are spoilt for choices, so just post a few places from the great ideas above and I for one will make the effort to turn up.

Cheers, the can :-)

Sounds good. I like the idea of two state overniters too. Eg Beechworth, corryong, Echuca, Cobram, naracoorte, Nelson obviously too. Even Mallacoota. We are there every Christmas/New Year.
Even three states, eg Wentworth, Berri, Mildura

In Victoria the road to Powelltown, noojee, Upper Yarra Dam are all good. Basically anywhere including or east of the Dandenongs. Spoilt for choice.
