Title: 2021-08-15 Swan Reach Ride To Eat
Post by: on August 16, 2021, 11:23:31 AM
I'll try and do a ride report in my break tomorrow, but for the time being here's the group photos:

Tomorrow has come and it's my break so here's the ride report:.

I left and headed down South Road, the Northern Connector and the Fatchen before riding into Daveyston.  I'd snapped the southern hemisphere's smallest post office (their claim) on the way to the Cadell RTE in 2019 and noticed that the road continued on under Sturt Highway so this time went to check it out.  It would be my only dirt road of the day.  This house was there.

I'd never really had a good look at Seppeltsfield before but what an interesting place.

I love the colors when you take photos early in the morning and the sun is on the right angle.  These palm trees in Marananga look gorgeous.  Marananga is another town that once had a German name and was changed during World War I.  South Australia has an abundance of such towns and I rode through at least four of them yesterday.

I've been through Nuriootpa many times but only noticed the station for the first time yesterday.  This is where all the orange gear cam off as it was getting quite warm.  The bomber jacket also came off at Penrice as it sure was toasty.

The reason I came this way was because I wanted to check out Light Pass, which like Seppeltsfield I'd never ventured into before.  I have no idea why this is called Plush's Corner.

Quite possibly my first return to Angaston since having some errands to attend to on Goof Ride Day 2019.

I stopped here in Keyneton to put an extra camera (ghost xl drift) on the bike.

Why?  I'll let Langers explain:

Home as well with a new favourite road - Sedan to Keyneton

This has been a favorite one of mine since doing it on the Firenze in 2015.  I also took this way home from the Overland Corner RTE in 2017.  Alas, this clutz put the camera on and turned on the power but forgot to press the button to get it taking pictures and I only noticed this when I took it off in Sedan.  The mobius camera was still running but I haven't looked at it's photos yet.

the Sedan to Keyneton section has enough stone walls to satisfy Stinky Pete's current tag game.

I only really noticed those for the first time yesterday.  All my other traversings I have tended to look in the distance.

That (the camera) would be the first of three mistakes I made in succession.  After doing bog laps around Sedan and taking heaps of photos (including the one below) I somehow took the wrong road out of town.

I saw a road sign saying Sandalton and thinking I don't recall Sandalton coming this far south (I thought I was on the road to Swan Reach) and kept riding.  Then I saw a T junction in the distance and thought I don't remember that either but didn't put two and two together until I actually hit said junction and the sign said Sturt Highway.  It was blessing in disguise because it meant I could refuel in Blanchetown, where I noticed my third mistake in that I hadn't shut the top box properly.  From there I crossed the Murray and head in to Swan Reach from there.  Johhnyyted was camped up near this jetty.

I still have a tonne of time to do bog laps around town and check out the sights before making my way to the hotel and vegetating around the back.

That was so relaxing and I killed almost an hour there.  I made my way to the front when I saw Richo ride across the ferry I had intended to but didn't take.

Johnny soon followed.  I've met Johnny in all sorts of places but believe it or not this is the closest to Adelaide.

A gaggle of Norposes also had their lunch so without having a good look at the menu (one didn't want to line again) I opted for a schnitty.  I must say that stir fry that Langers had looked good.

Sorry to hear Stinky Pete had to cut his trip short and hope he recovers quickly.  It was good to see Lionel again and Dragonstaff for the first time.  I hope they and everyone else enjoyed the lunch as much as I did.

My only stop on the way home was at the football cross country basketball oval in Mount Torrens because I needed to use the bathroom.

I created a Spotwalla trip but it only captured two points (both in the vicinity of the hotel) and neither of the buttons I manually used.  I don't think I've used it since Eyre Peninsuala for this reason.  My Greenalp one picked up everything on the way to Swan Reach.  I forgot to turn it on for the return leg.

The museum and old winery at Seppeltsfield is (or was, it's been a while) is well worth a morning or so, as well.

Cross country basketball - very good Bodo, I nearly snorted my coffee out my nose with that one.

Regarding Plush's Corner - according to Rodney Cockburn's "South Australia What's in a Name?" Plush's Corner was a railway siding, named after J Saddington Plush, an Orchardist. With a name like that you could imagine he was from quality stock. No surprise there, remembering no riff raff convict stock settling South Australia.

Probably plenty of ex-convict rif raf though...  :p  :grin

South Australia was once part of New South Wales so it did have a convict settlement.

That is incorrect. NSW was settled by convicts. South Australia, when it was proclaimed, was not settled by convicts. It is a very important distinction.
