The following tip always works for me, but as usual, never in the right place at the right time.
If you have the time to hang around in one place for the better shots, then it's about "lighting".
Morning and afternoon lighting always (to me) gives the better results, it's a warmer light and not a harsh midday light.
That doesn't mean every shot has to be a sunrise or sunset. Usually the best shot is sometimes behind you. Recently we were in Europe for 3 weeks and I was constantly looking where I'd been.....and there was a shot!
I have a Nikon D7100 with all the bells and whistle, some of the best shots I have in Austria (of scenery), were taken on a $300 point and shoot, in a bus, thru glass travelling at 100kph.....go figure.
So really it doesn't come down to the camera to take a "good" shot. So don't flick the Point & Shoot.
As others have said Composition............... and don't forget.............Lighting.
