Heat Stress and Dehydration

Ok Girls and Boys,
I spend a good portion of my work life dealing with heat stress, hydration, fatigue that sort of thing, and seeing and dealing with people who are not prepared, the same goes for motorcycling!

3 interesting facts.

1. 20% of Workers start work already Dehydrated. (comes from drinking coffee, softdrink, alcohol the night or morning before)

2. 1% Dehydration is about 800ml of fluid for an 80kg male.

3. If you are 3% Dehydrated, it is equivalent to being .0.8 Blood Alcohol Content, which means your 5 times more likely to have an accident.

I have had heat stroke, I don't wish it on anyone, in this heat we are having at the moment, please, please make sure your prepared, fluid is VERY important.

two excellent links below on working with heat stress and dehydration.

Thanks for the post. I never realized the profound effects dehydration could have on your ability to ride safely.

He should have ridden an ST!
Besides, he's too old to be riding!!

But, yeah!  Keep the fluids up.  Both articles cover the essentials (excepts you don't need electrolytes all the time, not even most of the time).

My first symptoms of being behind the hydration curve is a headache. Once it moves in, it can take a day to shake off completely.

The comment about very cold water is true, but body temperature water isn't at all refreshing.  Like everything, moderation is best, and cool water will lower the core temperature without causing cramps.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Thanks Streak.  It's a timely reminder for us all, with lots of summer riding on the horizon.
