Hi All, Just been in touch with jake Wilson for some tyres. I am going to make a purchase shortly and thought if anyone else is wanting to purchase then you might want to add your order.
For the ST11 he has the following available in Standard Sizes,

With the Aussie dollar being down the toilet at the moment I have looked at the costs and its not looking good. The combination of dollar and freight is making it the same as buying locally.
Has anyone ever tried fitting a 180/60-17?
Why I ask is that it seems that the end result in diameter is just -1.2% less. So 65 MPH would actually be 64.21 MPH. So revs would only be a fraction higher for a given road speed.
The question though is will the 180 width fit in the swing arm and ... is the 180 width exceeding the narrow rim width, causing unacceptable tyre profile distortion or shaping?

I usually buy from the US but my last rear I bought from the local car tyre dealer as I needed it quick but had I bought from the US I would still have saved. The Bridgestone T30r cost $283.75 but if went for the GT spec it would have been and extra $30 (wholesaler quote).
Had I bought the same tyre from the US then I would have saved $40 after the $15 fitting was taken into account. The GT spec tyre would have worked out about $70 cheaper.
Local tyre prices will eventually increase as they're all imported and it will in most cases be still cheaper to buy from the US.

I think Tipsy has, or still has, a 180/55 rear on rHonda. It may depend on the brand as I tried a 170/60 in one brand that did not have enough side clearance, while every other tyre that size was fine.

Interesting. I have a Michelin 160/60-17 on the CB400SF and it definately is wider than the same size Metzeler. I have tried to scour the net to get info on rim widths and tyre sizes and what I suspect is that the 180 should be on a 5" or even larger rim.

Piet, true the 180 technically should be on a wider rim to get the right profile. From memory Continental and Avon used to have recommended rims widths for various tyre sizes, along with revs/per km information. Some of that information does not seem as readily available these days.

The Avon site is great for the detail on tyres. Probably the best I've seen. Have not checked Continental yet but very impressed.

Having not bought tyres for the steed before what are you going to get . I have a ST1100A - abs model.

I put PR4s in 1300 sizes from Jake Wilson on my 1100 when I had it.
The difference was almost magical compared to the bridgestones they replaced. The confidence to tip in to corners and ability hold the road in all conditions is amazing.
Did notice a slightly higher rev because of the lower profile but nothing to worry about.

Hi Spanner, Thanks for your reply. I personally was hoping to stay with the standard sizes on the ST1100 and when I purchased mine it had Avon Storms. They dont make these anymore as the newer Storm2's have different sizing. I am finding this more and more with a number of manufacturers.
I was then going to go for the Metzeler Lasertec Front & Rear.
As another option, I thought of the Pirelli Angel GT front and the Night Dragon rear. I even looked at the non-std sized Angel ST rear.
So when I priced it from Jake these 4 came out as follows,
$105.99, $152.99, $121.99, $145.99 in front rear Metzeler Pirelli order. So a total of U$$526.96.
For this dollar value we have to add U$95.00 freight. Total U$621.96
At todays conversion to AUD thats AUD$817.66. So averaging that out its AUD$205 each.
Its a small saving so I am suspect I might be better off trying to buy local. I have found a rear (which is my greatest need) Michelin Commander II locally for $239.00 so I might simply try that rather than tie up extra dollars in buying tyres for the future. I know Michelin say this tyre has better milage, (I wonder if thats true) but I think I might give it try.
Let me know your thinking.

Have a look at www.oztyres.com.au (http://www.oztyres.com.au) as I recently did the sums, and with the cheapest freight option from Jake Wilson there was only $20 or so difference in pricing, and you can order a pair at a time from Oztyres so less money tied up. You can even ring and talk to them!
I would not go for the Angel ST (it was on the Trophy when I bought it) as the GT is much better and lasts longer. The commander should give good mileage as it is aimed at the cruiser market.
