I'm a 62 year old bike tragic.
There are currently a few bikes in the Man Cave and this is the latest addition.

This bike was given to me by an ex colleague.
It has done a few K's at 158,000 and has sat exposed to the elements for a long time.
When I went to pick it up the front brakes were seized, after a bit of persuasion we got it on the trailer.
I live near Kangaroo Valley and have been riding since I was 10 years old.
I currently ride a VTR1000f that I love however my brother who I do a lot of riding with recently bought a VFR1200 and my intention is to resurrect this bike to do a bit of touring with him.
I have toured on the VTR and my record is 990Klms in a day!

This is a pic of my VTR out past Nerriga with a few mates at a place called Johnnos Corner.
I have read a lot about the ST and just love bikes with carbs.
I have owned the latest and greatest over the years and prefer not to have the electronics that distract from the true ride experience.
I know my way around a bike and it is my intention to resurrect the ST with the help,of the folks on here.

With your new Honda you’ll be much more comfortable riding long distances.
A few of us on the Forum have completed Iron Butt Association (IBA) rides on ST1100/ST1300 bikes.
Lower tier IBA rides to be completed within 24 hours include the SS1600 (actually 1610 km) and SS2000, and a much more difficult task is the Centreline24; Port Augusta to Darwin (approx 2,734 km in 24 hours).
If you’re interested you’ll find information about the IBA on the web.
Last year I donated two white ST1100 bikes to Joe’s Motorcycles in Fyshwick if you’re looking for parts.

Hi Kenmoore, I live a little closer in Picton, so welcome to the forum. Nice colour you have sitting in the trailer.
The ST 1100 will help you increase your best k's in a day, I know from experience.
Happy to help with anything if\when I am home, which isn't too often theses days as I'm out riding as much as I can while I can.
I have a 1998 ST1100, STranger, and a 2008yr ST1300, STrangler and recently went to 3 wheels on a 2017 Can-Am F3S Daytona named BEEstY.
I am also the NSW\ACT OzSTOC flag bearer so I'm sure we'll meet at an RTE one day.

Hi and welcome from Peterborough SA.
Looking at the bike colour and the RH switch block it looks like an ex police.
Timing belt should be done at 150,000 km but no way of knowing if it has been done or not so I'd put it on the list of things to do.

I wondered what the numbers were on the switch block and now that the beast is in the cave I can see that it has been painted at some stage,
I wonder what its history is.
I will have a talk to my mate and find out npbut for now my first priority it to get it running.
As long as it fires and runs for a couple of seconds I will get an idea of the engines state.
From what I have seen these things are robust.
I also notice that the back shock looks to have had a spring fitted and the front forks are as soft as hell.
So my plan is to start it, assess it and start stripping with a view to doing the brakes as they are still binding, replace the timing belt, check the valves and shim as required, replace all fluids and filters, remove the fuel tank and clean to get it into a mechanical shape that will allow for reliable long distance running.
Then the bodywork will come into play.
Not sure what colour it will become however some ideas are forming in my head.
I am liking the bagged look but time will tell.
I will check out the VIN number and see if it was a police bike.
More pics to follow and I will start a new thread on the rebuild.
There is no rush on my part as I have a few things to attend to in the near future, one of them being the annual Moto Guzzi rally next month up at the Bretti Reserve outside Gloucester NSW.

Just checked the Model Code for the beast and it is ST1100PT.
Explains the switch gear on the right hand block. There is also a bunch of surplus wiring in the seat tail that was probably for lights and radios etc.
Interesting.
The original colour code was NH138 , can any one point me in the right direction regarding colour codes ?

The code is for the police colour - Shasta White. The T is the year code for 1996

A few giveaways if it is a police spec bike:-
Speedo calibrated in 2 k increments
Volt meter
Extra switched on the right grip
No 6 Switch next to hazard light switch next to left knee
Headlight adjust knob hidden under right engine cover up top..

Yes the bike has all,of the above and is now in the cave and the stripping and inspection has started.
Been neglected I am sorry to say and has also been over on the left hand side., nothing to serious by the looks just some telltale signs.
Part way through removing the fairings and it is obvious that the bike was originally white. Lots of cobwebs and stuffed fasteners.
I will strip it right down , get it started ,replace the cam belt, replace all fluids and filters, remove and clean the carbs and then start on the brakes. The front calipers are seized and appears that the discs all round are stuffed.
I will mic them up and see.
Lots to do however it is a typical Honda, well built and engineered so I am hoping that the engine is basically sound and just in need of some TLC.
I will inspect all bearings and repack or replace as necessary.
There appears to be no free play in the swingarm but God knows when the bearings were last attended to, like wise the steering stem bearings.
If I am going to do some K's on this beast I want it reliable and right.
It is my intention to respray the old girl, most likely white with black accents and black wheels.

Remember how I said that I was worried about the air filter !
My fears were well founded, over oiled and deteriorating.
Is this the standard or an aftermarket ?
Check out all the rotting foam in the base of the airbox.
Carbs will definitely be coming off, no problems there as a VTR owner I am more than familiar with carbs.

Not OEM but it might be K&N which are costly but also reusable - some on here use them

OEM is a paper filter, good thing you didnt start it or there might be foam bits through the engine. Oil on the foam will cause that degradtion if not cleaned and re-oiled regularly ( every 10 yrs isnt regular)

Started her up tonight with a new battery and she is whisper quiet compared to my other bikes.
Will be putting a standard air filter back in .
Definitely replacing the cam belt.
I am going to remove the wheels and check the brakes.
The front is almost seized rock solid.
Have to get some time to attack her.
I am impressed at how quiet the engine is !
Wonder if it has had some work done before ?
The rocker covers are leaking so it's new gaskets for those as well.
Will get to the carbs directly but it idles and runs well when the throttle is blipped.

These are some of the most corroded calipers I have ever seen, full,of a yellow gunky sludge and corrosion everywhere.
Managed to salvage 2 Pistons out of four, will order new Pistons and seals today. Will keep the salvaged items as spares.
I will have to disassemble the master cylinder and clean it as well.
The brake lines are the originals and they will be replaced.
Does anyone have any suggestions where to get some braided lines from ?
I have hel lines on my other bikes but they are a bit hexy for this budget build.
The front forks are a disaster and I will remove, clean and service.
Everywhere I look there is mass corrosion.
I intend to start at the front and continue back.
There is a lot to do.

Off Topic Re Men-65
It is a 2001 Moto Guzzi Aluminium Special Sport.
Alas it belongs to a mate of mine that I have known since the first day of school. We have ridden countless K's together over the years.
Unfortunately he had a big off on it after having done over 200,000 K's on it without much done to it other than service, new clutch and some personal mods.
It had a smashed rear weel that I replaced , and the right cylinder barbell and head including the valve gear is all smashed up.
There are also a few other issues however nothing that can't be sorted.
I wil get around to resurrection of this beast however there is no rush as after 14 months my mate is still recovering.
The ST takes precedence at the moment though.
There is also a an X75 Hurricane in the cave part way through a resto as well !
Where is the best place to get a timing belt ?

For braided brake lines talk to Pedders - They usually know someone who makes them to order, or can come to you to make them onsite to suit your build :thumb

It is on its way.
The more I look the more I see.
When I do rest is like this I tend to amass bits and pieces and then attack.
At the moment I am debating wether to overhaul the calipers or buy some working items from a wrecker and just do the pads.
At the moment the wreckers are in front from a cost point.
With builds like this I factor in costs and time.Although time is not a cost it is still important.
I have a budget of $50- per week on this so it won't be a fast build however I have some clear ideas on what I want the end product to be.
Something a little different from a standard ST, more along the bagger line.

I have some commitments that are also slowing things down.
Pics will come as it progresses , starting at the front and finishing at the rear is what I have planned .
Any help or suggestions will be and are appreciated and if anyone has any parts that are surplus to their needs I am always interested.
So far I have a new battery, oil , oil filter, new air filter and some much needed stainless fasteners.
There is a timing belt on its way.
I need a new left side rocker cover if anyone has one.
Not the last part I will need but findapart is always handy for odds and sods.

I would recommend new brakes, ( I replaced my front callipers) the ones from a wrecker may have a problem so may incur extra cost to re-replace.
