Low Fuel Warning Light Failure
« on: September 20, 2012, 01:12:15 PM »
When returning from Silverton I decided to check if the low fuel warning light would activate. As it turns out the bike ran out of fuel two days after I got home meaning the light never came on. Not sure when it failed as I normally put some fuel in before I get to the red mark. Ok, I had 10 litres of fuel still in the side case from the trip so that come in handy.

The fuel light goes through the self test on start up so that's ok. The gauge works ok. The fuel pump works ok. I've checked the parts diagram for the tank and I get fuel pump and float locations but nothing for the fuel sensor there. I Just checked wiring diagram again and noticed the fuel pump and reserve sensor together.

Guess this means a new fuel pump unless there's a repair available for the sensor. Another item on the to do list.

I've had mine come on once. Can't remember how fuel I put in but I'm sure i still had a reasonable amount left.

My low fuel light comes on when there are 5 litres left.
Whenever I think it's not working and refuel I can't get more than 23 litres in the tank so I guess mine's okay.

There is a repair around the traps, all you have to do is find a donor from the wreckers (something like a resistor from a VFR or some such, and swap it over). I will have a look later on as I saved it somewhere. Mine has never worked so I don't miss it

Alan, did you get my email about the timing belt replacement?

John,

The fuel light is not a big issue at the moment and I have had a look around the net and found this sensor repair and level adjustment page.

http://www.st-riders.net/index.php?topic=976.0

A Honda part number is listed which is a little cheaper than a new pump. I'm not to good on the soldering side of things so it's a trip to a friends place in the city for the repair early next year.

As for the Timing belt e-mail from you, no I didn't get it or it's gone to the junk folder so I'd better have a look there......not there either

Ok, I sent 2 attachments to your gmail address and had some trouble. I might just upload them to dropbox and send you the link.

Try these

The thermostat is relatively easy to change, and generic parts will do at a fraction of the Honda part (surprise!).  The timing belt really just takes some time to do one day.  The radiator comes out, so good time to do the thermostat. The top and bottom radiator hoses can be tough to get off - I replaced mine at the time but if they are in good condition you can reuse them, just be careful getting them off.  If you follow the instructions about the way you put the belt in and lining up all the marks it is pretty straight forward.

You don't have to remove the upper fairing if you take out the rear bolts locating it and are careful about removing the cam covers. The clutch cover does not have to be removed either - the two times I have done belts there was enough give to get the timing cover on and off.

Readily available ones that works are:

CPC12-180
Tridon TT240-180
Dayco – DT27A 82c

I tried an OEM one after my first one failed, and it did not last that long before it started running too cool.  The OEM one does however look more like the high flow versions of these thermostats, which are near the same price as OEM.

The Tridon one is at the Supacheap for $17.00 whether one is at Port Pirie is another question.....

Just found this whilst looking for things carburetor related (new plugs 300km wet and black, black smoke, found 8 ants in one bowl) anyway.

Just more food for thought.
