Narva H6 replacement bulbs ST1100
« on: September 30, 2012, 08:59:29 PM »
Okay I have been running in pirate mode since the trip to inverell.

Removed the offending bulb and bought a H4 replacement set.  :|||| You guessed it.

So yes i've just committed another newbie error.

Have found these on the web and all looks good to me but what do our brain's trust have to say?

I looked into these but they weren't that easy to find locally to purchase whereas H4 bulbs are like bums.. they're everywhere. H4 bulbs can be used if you get a set of adapters (I have them in my 1100). The adapters are usually available on ebay.

Try here..  http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/H4-Bulb-Adapter-Rings-Honda-ST1100-ST1300-ST-1100-1300-/380477183793?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5896351731#ht_599wt_1139

What difference are they between a H4 and a H6.
I didn't bother with shims, as a few people had had issues with them.
If you want a set of shims get in contact with Scarp, as he has a set of shims on his shed wall.
You guessed it, he didn't use them either.

The standard h4's i bought are 45 deg bottom tabs.
A bit of back reading on the forum and I had another shot
I cut the two bottom tabs of one and they just whant to twist inside the holder from side to side.
Then just bent the tabs on the next bulb but not happy with how they sit.

I will speak with my local auto parts store for availability of the Narva H6 bulbs on tuesday.
They look an exact match as they have higher tabs so hoping they just fall straight in.

I didn't have any dramas with the shims at all. The only issue was with getting to the back of the lights (which would have been the same either way), once I did the first one the second was simple.

I took the headlight out and modified it to fit H4s, never be a drama getting a bulb to fit again.

I modified my headlight as well.  I have fitted H4s with shims to others bikes and did not have any problems.  There is another technique around using some wire to help hold the bulb in place.  Honda cars may use the same bulb, so might be worth asking a Honda dealer.

I cut and modified the Tabs with some side cutters, using the ones I took out as a guide.

I found it easier going in from the top (screen, black fairing and weather protector off), then having a large mirror placed near the forks to see.  Once I could see what was going on, fitting was easy.

This is the old bulb:

The new Narva 50 Plus give some good light. Happy.

Going in from the top is a pain on the ABS/TCS models as there is some sort of module sitting directly above the lights that stops access. I ended up going in from underneath.

Well I got a couple of quotes today for the Narva H6 bulbs.
Remember these are identical in every other respect to a H4 bulb EXCEPT the two lower tabs are set at 55 deg instead of 45 deg.
$86.00 per Bulb..... :cuss  :crazy
So now im going to order as set of those rings.    :fp
Unless someone like scarp would like to off load a set from his garage for a fee of course. :whistle

I used the H4 bulbs, cut the 2 lower tangs off with side cutters and the corners which remained had to be pressed in but are a solid fit and do not move, the existing clip holds the top in place.

I have a few Philips Vision plus bulbs with the lower tabs removed, which I used before modifying the headlight. If you carefully locate the bulb all works well. The shims make it dead simple.  Don't pay too much for those shims, as some places charge way too much for what they are.

i put H4 in as well by cutting off the tabs... just a bit tricky to get them to sit right, but once in they are good

Recieved my shims today, pulled of screen and 2 front cowls and had new H4 bulbs installed and bike back together in just 20mins.
