If you do at least the red wire bypass of the connector that melts and fails, the starer relay should last the life of the bike. Mine melted just after I got the bike, but was salvageable and has been fine ever since. I did the more drastic bypass of putting in a relay to totally bypass the ignition switch for mains power (as standard, power goes from alternator/battery, up to ignition switch, then back to the fuse box) Ignition switch now just switches the relay.
