I'm proposing it for anyone to write anything they want that doesn't warrant a topic/ thread all of its own.
Some posts will be replies, but it doesn't matter what trend the topic takes, because THERE ISN'T ONE :grin
The idea came to me when I was riding home thinking about what happened to me on my Newcastle overnighter.
I arrived there at 4:00 PM and thought I remembered where my motel was. It was a very windy day yesterday (was again today!) and I rode along Zaara Street towards the Esplanade. About 20 metres from the corner I encountered wind so strong that it threated to blow the bike over. I stopped and put both feet down and tried to walk the bike backwards. The wind was being funnelled into the street between the buildings and every time I took the weight off a foot the wind would gust from the opposite direction and threaten to blow us both over. Thankfully, three blokes helped me turn it around and I was able to escape.
These 300+ kg bikes are a handful at the best of times, but when they want to act as a sail, they are impossible to manage.

Gotta feel sorry for truck drivers, as I'm sure a lot of the time it is the car driver who caused the prang- like the family of 4 killed up north QLD in the head-on with a truck while overtaking a semi.

How the heck do LD riders get snacks into the mouth? I have a Shoei helmet and I can barely push a peanut into my mouth while standing beside the bike, let alone doing 100 kays down the road. This is predicated, of course, upon wearing a full face helmet. Save your electrons and don't tell me you wear a flip-up or open-faced jobby.
That may well be the easy part. I still don't have a system for picking up a Menthos from anywhere to try and feed myself. Do you use a tankbag? A joey pouch (for those who fraternise with Roos)? A bike side pocket?

How the heck do LD riders get snacks into the mouth? I have a Shoei helmet and I can barely push a peanut into my mouth while standing beside the bike, let alone doing 100 kays down the road. This is predicated, of course, upon wearing a full face helmet. Save your electrons and don't tell me you wear a flip-up or open-faced jobby.
That may well be the easy part. I still don't have a system for picking up a Menthos from anywhere to try and feed myself. Do you use a tankbag? A joey pouch (for those who fraternise with Roos)? A bike side pocket?
If I remember to get those bags of glucose or barley sugar lollies I'll put some in the LH pocket (1100). I don't have a problem slipping my fingers between the raised visor and helmet to put lolly into mouth. I also push helmet down a little as I do so.
Same for breath test, just enough room if I push helmet down a little.
When Heather is with me she'll have some in her pocket and if I want one it will get handed to me so I can see it.

I had a triple road train push my bike over one day.
On the way back home from a river where I use go for a swim I had to enter the main highway from a dirt track. It also meant going up a 30 degree slope before getting to the tar which if all was ok if I didn't need to stop for any traffic. One time I had to stop to let the road train go before I could go. One or two trailers would have been fine but the third trailer added more air pressure into the mix and pushed the bike over. No way could I stop it from falling but I tried to lessen the impact by keeping hold of the bike. Had there been a lane width between the bike and road train it may have been a non issue and so it's a live and

Tomorrow I'm riding as Moto-crew for the Brisbane RTCC- Ride To Conquer Cancer. About 1500 pushbike riders ride 100 km raising sponsorship money for cancer research. I did the same thing last year for the inaugural one, and I see Sydney, Melbourne and Perth have one this year also. The major sponsor is Rio Tinto who pour a lot of money into making it happen. Everyone camps out at Lake Wivenhoe tomorrow night then ride all the way back to the starting point at the University of Queensland.
As Moto-crew we ensure safety at intersections and ride up and down the column helping anyone in trouble and encouraging those who are struggling. There are three pit stops, including a lunch break. The route takes in Chelmer, Richlands, Ipswich and Fernvale.
A mate whose wife had breast cancer which metastisised to her liver put up his hand to raise the minimum required to qualify: $2500. Last time I saw his webpage he had $11,600. That's the sort of friends he has!

Believe me, it's a great experience. I found it very moving when I did Moto-crew last year.
Don't be put off by the "Harley Crew" thing. They were going to supply 40 crew this year in Brisbane and managed to muster 13. It was HD Aust trying to do a bit of promo work while putting up the $50 per rider that we each paid last year. So this year we "miscellaneous makes riders" get our fee paid by HD. Gotta laugh! :thumbsup

We were discussing this very subject this morning, whether the uniform (big gut, bandana, jeans riding 1/2 inch above the hip bones, big boots, leather vest, bald patch and straggly pony-tail) is a requirement for owning a Harley, 'cause let's face it the 'look' really is a uniform. If you were to walk down the street in this get-up would some grizzled Harley rider approach you and say "You need to buy a Harley mate, you already look the part!"??? >:()

I obviously wouldn't buy one- got all the horses and adrenalin surge I can handle. But I thought the battery technology was interesting.

After a restless night sub-consciously planning fuel stops and dodging kangaroos, I got the bike ready and asked a neighbour to be my Start Witness for the IBA ride attempt. Departed home 10:50 to get fuel. The 11:00 launch was based on getting a fair bit of the 110 kph Newell Highway covered before kangaroo o'clock (sundown). Went through the new tunnel to get to Centenary Highway in about 20 minutes instead of the hideous goat track up over Bardon. Thence out to Ipswich and Warwick. Rode straight through there on to Goondiwindi for fuel and a bladder break. Then on to Gilgandra for petrol and my tasty ham and cheese sanger, nicely cool after thawing.
What to eat? You need convenient food, and must avoid fat that's hard to digest and sugar and carbs that make you sleepy. That leaves protein. So I went to Coles and found the health food section. Have you seen it lately? There are shelves of protein supplements, 90% flavoured with maltrex chocolate, whatever that is. One pack I bought had things resembling rum balls, or dog droppings. It doesn't taste like the former, and I still gag when I look at them.
Straight through Dubbo, Parkes and Forbes reaching Grenfell around midnight. Had called wifey in Gilgandra saying I didn't have a motel booked, and would be stopping when I needed to. SMS'd her in Dubbo saying not to wait up, that I was on a roll and would call in the morning. At that stage I still hadn't let on I was on an IBA award attempt. Before the naysayers jump in labelling the whole effort foolhardy, I'll make a few observations. Firstly, one is not forced into any particular timeframe like the Farrider RTEs. One can time the attempt to suit the weather, work, health, commitments and so on. Then there is plenty of expert IBA advice available about the hazards of fatigue. Regarding those two aspects, I needed to go to Melbourne to board the ferry on Friday night, but left on Wednesday giving me time to spare if anything worked against the safety or put pressure on to ignore common sense, e.g. bad weather, poor road or traffic conditions, mechanical problems or health/ fatigue. So it wasn't just an IBA ride, but it gave the ride a bit more value. Finally, to scandalise the agnostics and atheists of the world... my wife prayed for the ride regardless of its nature, just becaue I was out there and would need some real help along the way. I did not see one live roo all night. Just one little rabbit hopped across the road to say, "We're all out here- just not bothering you."
Some funny things happen on the road. It's easy to think of the B-Double drivers as the enemy when you're stuck behind one, especially if you're unlucky enough to be driving some poor powerless thing, not an ST which eats B-Doubles in seconds. I pulled in behind a big rectangular one at Gilgandra. The road was flat and he was driving the limit, so I was happy for him to deal with the fauna. We were barrelling along and I was on the truckie's channel but it was full of scratchy transmissions from all over the state. Suddenly there was one flash from his right indicator. I happened to be in his left wheel track (I swap around, partly to see a bit of the road ahead). A second later a big lump of unidentifiable carcase came through the right hand side. I don't know if that's a widely known message, but it forged a link between us in our isolated worlds. I gave him a hearty beep-beep thankyou when we parted ways. You probably worked out for yourself that one flash right and one left means it's clear ahead. Even if I hadn't been planning it, I take the opportunity to honour that offer. It might be the driver is sick of you tagging him. Provided the turbulence isn't an issue, it's noticeably warmer behind a big truck- maybe due to his engine heat, or just because he's wind -breaking for you. I'm definitely not advocating "drafting"- that's deadly dangerous. Sit back two car lengths or so minimum, and you'll still get some benefit. The aerodynamics are baffling, but some make less turbulence than most. It's like the ones coming towards you- some nearly blow you off the road, and some of the biggest go by with hardly a ripple.
Thursday 4th
After midnight it gets seriously cold, especially when there is no cloud cover and you're away from the coast. Valleys are worse than ridges. As it fluctuated between 5 and 10 degrees, I continued on through Young, Cootamundra and Junee, by now looking for a petrol station open. Junee has a card operated 24 hour pump, but I wanted the certainty of a docket for my documentation. With 65 kays left on the count-down I found a Coles Shell in Wagga Wagga, but they didn't have hot coffee, so I went up the road to the Caltex to get one there at 2:40. I know the purists avoid stimulants for their long rides, but it's fuel for me. I need three a day, and yes, I'm dependent. Go tell someone who cares.
Short break, then on the road to Albury and the Hume Highway. Badly needed a light breakfast but couldn't find a Service Centre so went into Wangaratta to the 24 hour Maccas. My wife is a Home Economics teacher, so I've been given all the lectures about the errors of fast food, but an Egg McMuffin when you need it is irreplacable. The great burger inspired the thought that I was way within the time-frame to reach Melbourne, making it a comprehensive SS1600 (Iron Butt Association Saddle Sore 1600K; 1610 km ridden in 24 hours). Back on the road I looked at how I was feeling and the distance, combined with the fact I was on a 110 kph highway and decided to bypass my target of Seymour and go for Melbourne. There were two aspects to that- firstly, the planned route was 1629 km by Google maps, but my Zumo reckoned it was a safe 1633. I had to have a solid minimum 1610, and I dreaded the thought that the IBA adjudicators would measure it differently and say I really went a shorter route and fabricated my claim, disqualifying me. The other things is, try telling a Queenslander that in 21 hours you rode from Brisbane to Seymour. "Why bother?" they'd say, "you can see enough here!"
I couldn't believe the number of speed cameras there were on the highway, with no warning signs except the usual general ones. They aren't just two poles as in Brissie- they have about eight poles with multiple cameras facing both ways. I hit Melbourne and the Ring Road decisions were thrust at me. I opted for City ring road which included the airport which I knew was away from the city but the rest sounded less useful. Got 100 metres along it and had to make another choice. Asked a grid-locked truck driver and he said, "Go left." It put me on Sydney Road, and 100 metres along it there was a Golden Chain Motel, for which I hold a 10% discount card. Got an early-occupy room and my Finish Witness and Finish Docket all in the same place. Fait accompli.

The planning and conditioning that is done to prepare for one of these is quiet amazing, I only Did a 1000km in 24, and I had prepared for it and it is much shorter than the 1600

When it came time to leave I called into the United servo for some fuel. No major dramas with wild life after dark on the way back except for one little rabbit and a roo about half way between Morgan and Burra. When I got back home I worked out the fuel usage for the trip over and came to a surprising 19.67kms/litre or 5.08L/100kms or around 550 kms for the tank. Slightly better than when I ran out of fuel (after 357kms with trailer) after getting back home from Silverton.

I think my account covered all the precautions that I took. Bear in mind I had three hours spare under the rules. When Diesel did his SS1600 he had a sleep on a park table. If at any time I felt I was losing concentration, I could have pulled into any of the scores of rest areas and town parks along the way. The terms "in the zone", "in the groove" and "wired" come to mind when thinking about one's performance. I'm fully aware of the frequency of accidents involving single vehicles that are attributable to fatigue, and also the fact that where a second vehicle is involved it can be the result of one person's micro-sleep.

I'm planning to do an SS1600 in March on the way to the National Rally. With some luck, the new Territory government will have kept one of their election promises by then and removed our 130km/h speed limit, a 1600 should be pretty easy without speed limits to stick to. :grin Longest day I've done so far was 1300, from Ti Tree to Darwin when I first bought the bike. I did that fairly easily with no preparation, so think I should be ok with the 1600.

Settle down groupies! I meant I removed the Airhawk and Sheepskin cover, and was left with only the custom JM seat. Previously I had thought that the custom seat was still too firm - but looks like it may have settled down as it was a pleasure to sit on (for 270kms) and my :butt smiled the whole time.
Still had the Airhawk in the pannier for back-up - but there it stayed. :thumb
I think my FarWeapon is finally complete. All systems work beautifully and reliably, and the bike is ergonomically set to be very comfortable for this happy camper! :runyay
But YoungOne has got me interested in trying a set of lowered footpegs tho. :fp

The efficiency of the turbo prop is very good. A petrol engine to provide the same power and speed is a lot bigger and heavier. eg, a trurbo prop to power a spitfire would be quite small ( but wouldnt souind any where near as good.
A pure jet engine to drive the plane, has all sorts of problems. like needing a hole through the plane for the exhaust (in the case of single engine

When your doing FarRides you can have one always charging while using the other (the 3rd can stay on the missus helmet :whistle)
This way you’ll never have to have a cable running from your headset to the bike or have it run out of power :grin :runyay

Usually the best way to find something is to stop looking for it. Generally you'll find it while looking for something else.
We've had it happen a few times.
Currently for me it's a new indicator relay and a couple of those screw in plastic clips which I bought for spares a couple years ago. Now I need the clips when I put the bike together and I can't find them and I ordered two more.

Remember when Tom Walkinshaw brought the 3 XJ 12 Jag's over from England and came 1st, 2nd, & 4th. at Bathurst? 4th because he broke a headlight against another car and ran over the broken glass and had to pit stop change a front tyre, then get back into the race. Made up umpteen places, but couldn't get the last one and back up to 3rd pos. Must have thrashed the daylights out of that V12!
It's on Youtube. A race worth watching just to see how the wide, low and bloody grunt filled Jags ate Bathurst.

Looks like my order won't be here by Wednesday as I they expected it would be. With the rally almost upon us, this is not a good time for any significant delay for the parts to get my bike back on the road.
Current update from parts supplier.

Well, I don't know what happened but somehow it did go to Belgium. The Post Office here in the US will contact them and have the package sent to you. It is addressed correctly but they don't have an explanation. I will give you new information as I get it. Sorry for the inconvenience.

So, they took three days from New York to Belgium and another 17 to get back..........Curious......why they weren't sent to Australia via London (direct flight) from Belgium is a little puzzling.

And it was foggy and a bit rainy today. The bike was parked where it was nice and dry. It now has Queensland roadwork clay all around the bottom, as they were still watering the roadworks on the weekend.

On a previous bike I've had to ride home with lights off due to an alternator failure, but back then we could turn the lights off. Still had to push the bike the last three or four kms.

I think it was a case of passion exceeding the availability of birth control at the time or other words to that effect.
The twins turn 18 in two weeks time, doesn't seem that long ago when they were born.

I grew up in a little Queensland Town and didn't get to go to concerts. Most were in Brisbane which back then took 6 hours plus, (down to about 4 hours on the current roads with modern cars)
But that doesn't mean I didn't listen to the music. So in some regards I missed a bit of that but I don't regret it.
Saw plenty of local pub bands, played in one for a couple of years. We were called "Albatross" and then after a reformation "The Loose Connections" :rofl. It's so corny now... And back then they were cabaret's or dances or the big ones were a "Ball" back then.....

Could this be the ONLY place in the WORLD that aircraft cross the state border on their wheels? (i.e. on the ground, 0 feet altitude?)... :think1
Not to mention the split for council rates etc.
Airport charges??? Aircraft landing fees etc. Are they council run, govt or private?
When we lived at Karratha, WA the airport was run by the council so they got all the fees etc..........

These guys are riding their ninth day.
The field is back to 88 bikes. The three Ozzies are still in the running, in 35th, 43th and 44th places. Very creditable considering the level of competition, and it's not their normal "backyard".

wildfireangel (Heather) has been on the knee replacement list for about a year and on Thursday the 25th we got a call letting us know that due to a cancellation Heather is up for her knee op if she still wants it. Ok, it's a goer. So monday it's up to the local clinic for some swabs (infection control) and a medication chart.
Wednesday it was an 8am pre-op visit where we saw a theatre nurse and the anaesthetist so that meant leaving home at 6am........we're brave souls.......on the bike.
Then Thursday it's a 7am admission into the day surgery theatre and that was a car trip because leaving at 5am was just a little to cold for me.
I spent a few hours passing the time before calling back into the hospital. Heather was ok but still sleepy.
Friday, I took another ride over to visit her. The physio was there and Heather was sitting in a chair and just had her first series of exercises. Nurses had to help her in and out of bed and for trips to the loo but otherwise her spirits were good..
Saturday, another ride over and Heather told me she'd taken a walk down the corridor(with a walker and a physio). We went for another walk and found the patient lounge, and then she came with me while I got a packet of chips.
Heather needs help to lift her leg, but it's only for support but she's getting there and should be home no later than Tuesday......There's a 6 to 8 week recovery period so all should be all most back to normal after that

Knee replacement surgery has a pretty painful recovery phase, so I'm pleased to hear she's doing so well.
Doc says the first 24 to 48 hours after the op are the worst......but everyone is different.

Well I certainly screwed up big time on Sunday.
Karl (met at Esk Sat) came around to have his towbar fitted , easy I says.
Start on job have extra metal for stays (no t shaped pieces) have look where to mount and need to make holes for metal bar,,,get out Dremmel.....
And proceed to drill hole,,,,,,,right thru side of Main Wiring loom :cuss :cuss :cuss :cuss :|||| :|||| :cuss,
the feeling is not good and inspection shows about a dozen wires cut :|||| :|||| :cuss proceed to solder and shrink wrap after stripping more of the tail light section to get more work area,
This all takes time and it was running out as Karl wanted get home, so it was RACQ and $95 later Karl is off, (I am covering the costs its the least I can do)
Calls later to let me know that he arrived home safely, and will either finish it himself or another friend will do it,,,,,
I learned ....when you have a stiff neck and only one eye working,, supply gear/tools/etc and let them do the work.
And although the mind is willing one must remember the physical attributes of ones body are not.
Sorry Karl. and from now on I will only be doing my own shyte.

I rang the bike shop this morning and the bolt which had been on back order has arrived. Being posted today along with the parts needed for the fork seal replacement. Should be back on the road in a couple days.

If it wasn't for the shower of rain the screen would still be dirty......lol

Hi,
Just an update on this.
We've just got back from seeing the surgeon who did the knee op on Heather.
So far so good and no need to go back for another year.
Heather tossed the walking frame after a week, tried the crutches for 30 mins and tossed them and has been walking un-aided since then.
We had one try out ride to Jamestown (80km return) for lunch (3 weeks ago) and two weeks ago went to Port Augusta (250 kms return) and her leg was ok except for some expected pain from to much walking around. Looks like it's all on track for our Birdwood RTE next week.
And for her broken leg (Sept/Oct last year) it all looks good and back to normal.

If you've never heard of them, they're apparently the ant's nickers for cooks. Do everything except the washing up, so I'm told.
So at least I still have a use in the kitchen.

On the 21st Jan I applied for work back up in the Port Hedland/Karratha area as Assistant Manager.
The store manager of the Port Hedland store rang me back on the 22nd and I find out we used work with each other when we were at Karratha. I rang the store today and I have one foot in the door and only waiting on the decision of the regional manager who is on holidays until the 10th of Feb.
Between now and then everything is on hold.
:think1 Cyclones, 40C plus temps, sub tropical weather, remote area as opposed to freezing winters and no work where I am now.

Yesterday I took the bike down to get a quote for two tyres for my car. When coming back home I spotted our local TOLL courier (a bike rider as well) just stopping at the bank so I decided to let him know about me getting work.
I stopped beside his drivers door and scared the crap out of him as he thought I was on a police bike and that the bike sounded like a BMW :eek.

After being told to fast for 12 hours (from 9pm last night) I was expecting the diabetes test where you have drink and they take blood before and two hours later.
What a relief when I found out it was for cholesterol and thyroid function and only one lot of blood.

I found the driver updates for it this morning, installed and tested. A lot easier than setting up, connecting to and using the mobile phone as a modem.

On a less happier note,
One of our friends died last Tuesday (3rd June) whilst at home. After the autopsy and other related issues surrounding a death at home the funeral is on Tuesday the 17th which we were notified of this morning.
So I/we have a ride down to the southern suburbs of Adelaide on Tuesday and an overnight stay.

Resident Evil: Retribution 3D/2D arrived in the mail today so we watched it but only after nearly thinking we had a crook disc. Thinking the 3D would be on a different disc I put what I thought was the 2D version in the player and it wouldn't work. I worked it out in the end, I'd put the extras disc in first (nothing on the disc to say that it was) and not the movie disc. Swapped discs to try the other one and after starting the choice between 2 and 3D came up. Forgetting that it was Blu Ray and that both versions would fit on the same disc.
As with the previous movies in the series this one makes one wonder if a number six is in the offering

And that's a knitting machine in the background. Haven't seen one of those for 40 years. Bought the Missus one, but she didn't take to it.
Mum tried to teach both of us hand knitting when growing up (as mums did back then) and I picked it up and my sis couldn't. I bought that one in the early 90's and it's been used off and on since then. I bought a metal bed one 6 months after that and I have had another 3 given to me over the years.

South of Kempsey I was in a roadworks 80 zone behind a long line of slow moving traffic on a single lane divided road. I slipped into a turn lane on the right and ran up a couple of hundred metres only to see a Policeman at the top of the hill radaring the traffic. He suddenly bolted for his car. I took off hoping it wasn't me he wanted but he caught me a couple of kays down the road. He breathalysed me then asked me if I remembered overtaking a vehicle using the turn lane and crossing a painted island. I admitted it. He told me to wait there then he sat in his car for 15 minutes checking my data and searching his book of offences. He couldn't find the offence. I stood beside his car watching him poring over his booklet pointing to every item with his pen and then rechecking back through it. He came back to me and said, "If I booked you for what you did it would be a $330 fine and 3 demerit points." I looked suitably penitent and he said, "Let that be a warning." So I shook his hand and offered him a Mentos (which he couldn't take because it probably constituted a bribe.
I was wise enough not to ask him what the offence he was letting me off was- that would have been cheeky and provocative. While it's unusual, irregular and arguably unwise, there is no law laid down saying you can't use a turning lane to over-take a vehicle.
I think he was so sure he had me on a big misdemeanor that he failed to get the radar reading of 10 kays over, and forgot the crossing of the painted island (which might not be worth writing a ticket for).
This recounting is not intended to belittle the Policeman who was quite a nice young fellow, nor to suggest this is a recommended manoeuvre. I just thought it was an interesting encounter. The interview took place here: S31.16219, E152.82086

My elusive battery charger was finally located this afternoon and is now giving the car battery a charge. The car has also been collecting all sorts of bugs and plant debris so I found some sugar soap and started cleaning it and keeping away from the power cord and charger.

It depends what you want. If it's just twisty roads, that's one view point. If it's activities, that's another. If you want historical sites, there's plenty. Nature walks- scads. We did a bit of all of those in a busy 7 days. There's plenty of camping available, and backpacker hostels. We went B&B with a couple of motels. You need to be lucky with the weather. We had 5 beautiful days and two drizzly ones. There are a lot of two-up bikes getting around.

While on the PC I had some chest pain so I went up there to get it checked out. ECG and blood test just after I got there showed all seemed ok but I had to wait another six hours for follow up tests at 2am. As luck would have it a slight delay with those tests as another person came in with an allergy reaction so by the time I had the next lot of tests it was 3:30 or so before I got home. It would been around 4am (maybe later) before I got to bed and I crawled out of bed this morning at 10am.

The majority of the rest were BMW 12200, 1150 and 1100s, a few VStroms, coupla Harleys and FJRs. No ST1300s- the bikes tended to be lighter- e.g Suzuki GSR, Triumph Scrambler, Deauville and a Duke 690.

The gears on my push-bike were adjusted this afternoon. My 18 speed derailleur system is working as good as I can get on 15 speeds. Why only 15? Well the largest sprocket on the rear gear set didn't pass quality control ( if they had it) as can be seen in the picture. Note difference in height of teeth on the innermost gear. The limit has been set so it won't change into that gear.
Even the front derailleur needed adjustment as it would only change between the inner and middle gear. Again an adjustment to the limit screw and all three low, med and high gears now work.
Now I have no excuse not to ride it.......but not today

Fixed it so I could ride it.........Heather had an idea to buy a bike each in a means to improve fitness. Now the gearing is doing something close to what its supposed to do I have no reason not to ride it. I much prefer to have my two wheels with a motor.......not human powered.......lol

At the end of January Heather ordered a sport cam via an online E-bay store which we guessed was based in China. Well that item never arrived until today and long after we advised of a non-delivery and a refund paid.
We have no idea where the camera was sent from but the return address is somewhere in The Netherlands and the shipping label seemed to originate from there as well. The funny thing is that South Australia has somehow been transplanted and become a state of Canada which is where the parcel was sent to and then forwarded on to us.

Only trouble with that theory is that the teeth on the sprocket don't match the gaps in in the chain when it get around to that position. The last bike I had and my first with a derailleur system only had five gears on the back and the innermost sprocket's teeth were the same height all the way around. Anyway where I am I'd be pushing to use the lower gear range if at all.

We decided to ride the pushbike's down the main street today and do some shopping. I had the privilege of towing Heather's dog trailer which had the shopping in. We did walk some of the way back as it's up hill.

Since the time I got my Dog 11 months ago, I've been lobbying my council to put in an off-lead dog park in town. I've spent the last 11 months sending them proposals, quotes for fencing, talking to other councils who do have them in place, having meeting with Rangers and mayor etc basically doing their foot work for them.
Last night we had a working group meeting and they told us that it's all gone through once they source funding, will be all steam ahead....
Probably still another 6 months away, but hey, at least I have confirmation it's going to happen

Looks like it could be one of two similar crossings (that I remember) on that road. When Derek and I crossed them on the way to Toowoomba back in March, there was a few centimetres of water over them, and they were a bit slippery.
Nearly resulted in a crash, I wouldn't call it an Accident Blackspot site, but it was nearly an Accident Brownspot situation.

So with that said to see how wide the distance is on the photo you need to calculate the Pi Squared by the aperture of the camera and then multiply that by the atmospheric pressure on the day sub-divided by the temperature squared should give you the distance over Pi........... easy Wot thuh

The idea came to me when I was riding home thinking about what happened to me on my Newcastle overnighter.
I arrived there at 4:00 PM and thought I remembered where my motel was. It was a very windy day yesterday (was again today!) and I rode along Zaara Street towards the Esplanade. About 20 metres from the corner I encountered wind so strong that it threated to blow the bike over. I stopped and put both feet down and tried to walk the bike backwards. The wind was being funnelled into the street between the buildings and every time I took the weight off a foot the wind would gust from the opposite direction and threaten to blow us both over. Thankfully, three blokes helped me turn it around and I was able to escape.
These 300+ kg bikes are a handful at the best of times, but when they want to act as a sail, they are impossible to manage.

It's a Honda and it has a shaft drive.
So you can't really go wrong with one. Hasn't got the grunt of an ST1100, but you wanted light-weight.

A friend of mine who lives about an hour away just got his learners permit about 3 months ago, he loves it etc etc, anyway a while ago he was asking if I was a member of netriders.net.au, I said to him when I first got my licence I joined up, but ended up having a falling out with a couple of their moderators and and walked away from it back in 2011.
So he said he was going to do one of their Sunday (learner/newrider) group rides along the Great Ocean Road, and asked if I'd like to come along. I said have fun, but no.
Then a few hours later I told him I'd come along, because in my mind he is just a learner of 3 months and the Ocean Road/mountain road into Forrest can be hairy at the best of times.
Anyway, after we meet the group in Geelong, mixture of bikes in the group and also skill levels we hit the Great Ocean Road.
It start raining, and continued to rain until mid afternoon. So the Great Ocean Road, wet slippery and windy and speed limited to 80km and these guys start overtaking on solid lines, blind corners and doing the stuff I'd expect to get them killed.
At the pitstop at Apollo Bay for Fuel. (Not me I still have a full tank) I was expecting the guy running to show to say something about safety of them and other around you, considering this ride is for new rides and learners. But no....
This is me at Apollo Bay on looking for an exit strategy. Deciding when to leave the group.

I choose to stay with them to forrest, because A) I was hungry and B) I wanted my learner buddy to tackle the road to Forrest. I told my friend, we're riding at the back and take your time. Let these Di*#heads kill themselves.

Thanks Marcus. That's a wonderful thing to be said about us. I have no need to impress anyone when I ride, and the occasional "rush of blood" through some nice corners is for me, and I'm not quick enough to impress anyone anyway. :grin In all honesty, my non-riding friends express their wonder at overcoming the challenges presented by riding around Australia, an IBA ride, a 1100km return rides for lunch somewhere, or in Chris riding pillion for 2,000km to Toowoomba for a weekend gathering.
There is more of "living the dream" and "cred" in touring Oz by motorcycle, than there ever will be in surviving an illegal and risky 10km fang through the hills, fueled by testosterone and stupidity.

MATURITY
Most of OzSTOC members have a mature outlook (Nothing to do with age) and that's what drew us to the ST1100/1300 in the first place. It was a bike set up to tour and not to race around into corners etc.
EXPERIENCE
This one may have an age component to it.The majority (If not All) of OzSTOC Members are experienced riders, we either had our spills and/or close calls, the ST isn't our first bike and in lots of occasions not our second and third either.
SENSE OF MATESHIP
When we ride together its for the most a bunch of mates riding together, and if your a newbie, you won't be for long. Because of this "MATESHIP" and not just that we're a riding group we're able to talk to each other and if we see something a bit suss about your riding someone will speak up.
An experience I had earlier in the year was a fellow OzSTOC member was concerned about how much clearance I was giving on the duel carriageway when I came back in from the right. He thought I was cutting it a bit to close. I took on board what he said and gave a greater distance when I passed on the duel carriageway. To me watching my mirrors I thought I was giving enough room, however from a following perspective the other rider had a clearer view and talked to me. Since then as the mirrors don't give you a real clear view I've increased the distance when I turn back into the left lane after passing another vehicle.
We have the ability to do that and other groups don't as pride and ego get in the way.
So yes it's a combination of those things I've listed and much much more (in my humble opinion)

I'd hate to think that if that's allowed to happen on learner rides without the experienced leader/tail end Charlie correcting it then they are not doing their part to encourage safe riding techniques.

I think we need to keep in mind that when we ride with a person who has just gained their Motorcycle licence (no matter which State or Territory) the skill level which has been recognized by the relevant State Authority is the bare minimum to get that motorcycle from one point to another. Experience will come from practice...that is every time they take that bike out they're practicing and honing their skills.
We can do one of two things;
1: We can try and impart our experience to them in the form of mentoring. They either accept it or reject it.
2: We ignore the faults and mistakes that we see in them when they ride. We either accept that or reject that -- if we reject it then see option 1.
I should go out and get some practice over the weekend...... :runyay ;-*

We had to go to Port Pirie today so while there called into the local registration office and sorted it all out. Ended up with a cheque of $67 being sent out for a refund of fees back to July 2015; not often we get a Chrissy present off the state govt.

BUT, the other day a pharmaceutical benefits card arrived which drastically reduces the cost of our medicines. So we scouted the house for any scripts and did a shop up at the local pharmacy. :runyay

When they checked out four hours later, the concierge handed them a bill for $350. The man explodes and demands to know why the charge is so high. He told the clerk although it’s a nice hotel the rooms certainly aren’t worth $350 for four hours. Then the clerk tells him that $350 is the ‘standard rate’. He insisted on speaking to the manager.
The manager appears, listens to him, and then explains that the hotel has an Olympic-sized pool and a huge conference centre that were available for us to use.
“But we didn’t use them”, the husband said.
“Well, they are here, and you could have,” explained the manager. The manager went on to explain that the couple could also have taken in one of the shows for which the hotel is famous. “We have the best entertainers from Sydney and Melbourne perform here,” the manager says.
“But we didn’t go to any of those shows”, the husband said.
“Well, we have them, and you could have”, the manager replied.
No matter what amenity the manager mentioned, the husband replied, “But we didn’t use it!”
The manager is unmoved, and eventually the husband gave up and agreed to pay.
As he didn’t have the cheque book, he asked his wife to write the cheque. She did and gave it to the manager. The manager is surprised when he looks at the cheque. “But ma’am, this is made out for only $50”.
“That’s correct. I charged you $300 for sleeping with me,” she replied. “But I didn’t!”, exclaims the manager.
“Well, too bad, I was here, and you could have”.

I flew into Melbourne from Bourke in 1980. While tying the plane down, a passenger gave me a Minti. It was winter, so the Minti was hard and when I bit on it, a filling stuck to it as I opened my mouth. My hosts took me to the hospital dental clinic around 6:00 PM and the filling was replaced on the spot.

Go down to Vinnies and buy a pilot's uniform.
I was staying with my cousin about 30 kms north of Bundaberg when I needed to see a GP about an infected eye. I couldn't get an appointment with any of the GPs in town so my cousin told me to call for a GP to travel out to his place to treat me, for free.
In the end I didn't feel comfortable about doing that so he took me to the Bundaberg hospital where I was seen relatively quickly. The Dr filled a script then went down to the hospital pharmacy to collect the medication for me. How good is that. No charge.

So, since I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Chum Diet again.
I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in hospital last time, but I'd lost 10 kilograms before I woke up in intensive care with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.
I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pockets with Chum nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry.
The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in queue was now enthralled with my story.)
Horrified, she asked me if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off the kerb to sniff a Labrador and a car hit me.

If you ride, alans1100, take advantage of the trip to do an IBA ride in each direction.Not to fussed about IBA rides at the moment;

If it happens I'd need to be there on the 16th so leaving the 13th would see me with two maybe three nights on the road. Anyway another option is on the cards which might mean I take Heather to Marla and Heather and her other sis go up to Darwin. So I have two trips planned now. If that happens I might be able make that one of the FarRider list rides (e.g. 1000 kms on day 1 and 800km or more on day 2) Guess we'll know tonight or tomorrow either way.

It's a 32GB class 10 SDHC mini card and it failed after 15 months. I thought it might have been a file error or something and a no go on trying to reformat
it when I got home so it's now in the bin. Heather had the same type of card in her Chinese cam and it's (after reformatting) now in the GoPro. I ordered a new card this morning so hopefully it will be here in time for our ride to Pirie on the 10th so I can try out the new cam mount on the trailer.

I've been looking for a replacement for the Wing, believe it or not. Something lighter as a commuter, gravel road runner, whatnot.
The ST does for me what the Wing does (as I think Brian will understand now).
Yesterday I took a test ride on a Tenere because they're very popular with the FarRiders. Too bush oriented, uncomfortable, and overly technical for my tastes.
The salesman says, "Oh, a simpler bike- how about this low mileage recently traded Triumph Explorer?"
Took it for a ride. Argh! Rough as guts.
Went to another dealer who has a low kays Honda Crosstourer. Took it for a test really hoping it was the one, being a Honda V-four shaft drive with cruise control. All the boxes ticked. BUT it buzzed like a twin and had a hopeless seat. AND, wait for this: the indicator selector and horn switch are upside down!!! I could not live with that. On the test ride I kept blowing the horn to indicate. The designer who put that on the bike should be forced to use hand signals, standing up, naked, in Winter, for the rest of his life (no, I'm too generous).
Now a person might get used to it if it was the only bike you ever rode, but I'll have it as my second bike and at my advanced age, I depend heavily on muscle memory to navigate this weird world, and it just wasn't feasible. I might have lived with the buzzy engine (the reviewers called it "silky smooth"- they haven't ridden an ST, obviously) but that was a deal breaker, simple as that. So now what?
They had a pair of brand new 2015 V-Stroms on the floor and I've always been partial to them. I took the DL1000 for a ride and found it very buzzy (you forget how rough inferior bikes are after you've ridden an ST for a while!). Heaps of power and very responsive. Cornered nicely, hard seat (another thing I've been spoiled by the ST) and "clunky".
I took the V-Strom 650 out and found it much smoother. The instruments are modern and readable.
I know, I know- it's chain driven. Life is full of compromises. I'll learn to live with it- they tell me modern chains and lubes are better than the dirty old days.
I wasn't keen on the LAMS model- the 2016 comes in Cherry red and I got it at the 2015 price.
My first ever brand new bike. It comes in from Sydney next week.
I'm stripping most of the farkles off Ruby and she's the trade-in.
And no very far down the track, the GL will morph into my next ST1300 :runyay

I can understand the 'wing sentiments if I could get one I would. The 1100 was the next best bike at the time ( can't believe it's a few months of 10 years) but I know she won't last for ever. The current 40th anniversary model (or one a little older) might be affordable for me when I reach pension age in 6 years

A Ruby II is definitely on the shopping list, although I'm also partial to white. If they came in the same blue as the Wing, I'd track one down, but I've had the Colorado blue and it's a bit dull for my flashy tastes. Black is definitely not on my menu- poor visibility and shows dust badly. The bronze is nice, but it's 2003, before they refined the bike. The "platinum" like you had is quite easy on the eyes.

It has been promised that town central will be connected here by the end of this year.
Currently I get around 2.2 Meg/second dload speed, (only because I am a hundred metres or so from Telstra exchange) mate at the other end of town is on the same deal as I am, and is lucky if he gets a quarter of my speed. He is around 5 Km from the exchange.
Nearest node to his house will be just 3 doors away.
Dodgy Malcolms Idea of NBN ... will raise tobacco tax to pay for it.

I did a speed test this morning (while the local kids were at school) and came up with about 12.9/.9 Mbs (down/up) but then we're a small town compared to Portland.
Currently I get around 2.2 Meg/second dload speed, (only because I am a hundred metres or so from Telstra exchange) mate at the other end of town

All good - added some new apps (??) which I'd never use so I uninstalled them. Only issue is that one of the updates (on laptop and my 8.1 PC) in the past removed the GoPro WIN USB driver package so camera is no longer recognised when connected. No- the lights, sheepie and tank cover are gone, to name the obvious ones. Without the tank cover, the unmarked tank is revealed, ditto the seats.
You're right, Sicman, the CC and heated grips are obvious in the photo, to anyone like us who knows what the controls are.

Though the NBN wireless has been switched on for outside the town built up boundary. Our house though is in line of sight of the tower but we have to wait for the FTTN service to be done; by end of June/July if all goes well.

They do keep popping up out of blokes' sheds.
Unfortunately there's a predominance of black ones lately. Understandable as the was the colour of the last few years of importation.

When I first joined OzSTOC in 2011 it took about 6 months to read through everything on the forum and since then I spend at least an hour each day reading everything that is posted WOW:
Every now and then life gets in the way and there may be a couple of days where I don't get a chance to read through everything :|||| then it'll take a bit longer to get back up to date on everything :eek

The "rule of operator sequence is BODMAS", (Brackets, Of, Division, Multiplication, Addition then Subtraction).
So I'd agree 3÷1/3 = 9, but then the Addition of 1 makes that 10 and that subtracted from 9 leaves us in negative territory at -1.
However, the "AS" (Addition and Subtraction) order is over-ridden by the "Left to Right" priority, therefore it reads as
9-9+1= 1

we get 9 - 9 + 1 =
cancel out like terms so 9 - 9 = 0

A little bit of excitement in the unit below my sister's. After our WA RTE visit yesterday we get to see a police car parked in our temp car space. A couple hours a knock on the door and it seems the guy living down below has gone missing. They asked my sis a few questions and again this morning. Forensics have been here all day plus the usual assortment of police personnel as well. Looks like another couple of officers will be keeping an eye on the place overnight. They arrested a guy this morning as he had the keys to the unit and was using the missing guys car.As an update to this:-
Channel 7 news hanging around as well so might have something on there tonight.
The missing guy had been murdered with the suspected killer in custody. A little excitement before leaving for our trip back home.

As a tryout on the way I set up the Go Pro as a dash cam. Forgot to charge the battery and only got about 24 mins of video but more than enough to make it acceptable to be used in that way. The only issue was the mounting hardware and being a spur of the moment thing it was ad hoc from what I had on hand.
I should have swapped cases and powered the cam from the 12 volt supply in the car but at 6 am being the middle of the night the brain isn't to functional.

I edited what I had and came up with about a usable 10 minutes. Replaced the soundtrack with music instead of listen to boring chatter.

Charged that up and removed negative lead so when I need to use the car it's put the lead back on again and remover when not using it.
Car goes in tomorrow morning to see what's causing the battery drain. With all the electronic gear on the car it could be anything.

The laptop is currently having WIN10 put back on it. I took advantage of the free upgrade on both PC and laptop when WIN10 was first released but not yet keen on installing it again on my PC because it slowed the start/shut down by about 3 times. See what happens I guess.

Our town is having the streets dug up to install sewage mains. On Monday they managed to cut the NBN/Phone lines so we have limited internet until the experts get here and repair the cable.
Using Optus via my tablet which has 7GB plus 2GB shared with Heather's phone.

Also applied for general dental a few weeks ago and have to wait 12 -18 months for that. Then I can apply for any dentures to fill in the gaps and another waiting period for that.
I do have private extras cover for this sort of stuff but the gap payment would be more than the $60 I just paid.

I had the option to either use the restore partition or use the restore discs and I opted for the latter. Restore not complete error message with an option to try again but no luck.
Rang HP yesterday and on their instruction did a system test. The code that came up suggested a hardware issue so PC is packed up awaiting a courier so it can be returned and repaired.
In one sense we're happy it happened now as the warranty runs out in two months. Only thing we are not sure of is what we'll get back. HP suggested anything from a repair using refurbished parts to another PC.
Their service centre rang yesterday to confirm the details and they hinted at a hard drive replacement, courier should be here Monday to pick it up.

Now only allowed to link up to 25mb for free on there now.
I have some on Flickr which I started using after Photobuckets upset and since they changed hands the free link limit went to 250 photos so they're fine with only 200 on there.
Everything else went on to http://www.imghostr.net/ (http://www.imghostr.net/)
Apart from here which took ages I had to update a few on FarRider and on MyMcphoenix where they prefer images uplodded to the site rather than hot linked.
Only site I couldn't update was related my knitting machine. They fairly strict on editing your own posts allowing only hour after you made the post. Had to leave those images on photobucket but everything else is gone from there.

The old one expires at midnight so cutting it fine. I went to the license section of our Transport SA website and entered the required details and their computer system tells me my licence had already expired which wasn't a big deal at the time.
Proceeded with the transaction and on the printed temporary licence the date starts from the 11th essentially confirming the old licence is still valid today.

I had been a registered user since they first opened 14 years ago in 2003.
When they started limiting access to third party hosting and demanding payment, I deleted most of the stuff in there and closed my account.
They even sent me a query as to why I no longer use their services?.
I now use imgbb.com which is a free service to all.

I went to Flickr and moved most of my stuff over there until Yahoo sold that off but the new owners at least kept free third party hosting for for 250 photos.

So it would appear they have backed down a bit and don't blur existing pix- I just can't add any. That suits me, as I don't have Alan's patience to repost scores of photos from a new host. I just checked a post from 2011 (2 STs ago) and the pic isn't blurred, so it's working for me.

I'd be astonished if there are folk who don't have their originals. Had some help from mac55 though to be more accurate it was I who helped him. Thanks to him for the help.
The old belt had a few splits in it but surprisingly no cracks. No idea how long the belt has been on the car but we've had it 9 years and it's a 2005 Territory

Ruth and I just returned from 4 weeks away in Victoria. It started with the annual CMA national run at Anglesea, and then we did our own thing for as long as I felt I could get away with without being labelled as ‘dead wood’ by my staff at work.
8000 Kays in 4 weeks with no incidents apart from one short conversation with a very friendly NSW police officer. 10 minutes after walking in the door Ruth managed to gouge her shin badly on the corner of the dishwasher door.
So ... my advice to anyone who owns a dishwasher or other modern appliance .... get out and have some real fun before the blasted, evil thing kills you in your sleep.
