Windows 10 Upgrade

Has anyone done the free upgrade yet? If not, then are you thinking about doing it.

I'm in the process of moving files from the WIN 8.1 laptop back to the desk top. The files don't need to be moved and most are just mainly copies of what's on the PC so the laptop will be the test bed and if it's ok I'll leave WIN10 there and leave my PC as it is now (WIN8.1) and leave Heather's on WIN7.

I have on one of the work convertibles (asus T100).  Went quite well (including keeping all the software that was installed).  Just make sure to do a custom install so you can set privacy settings (so all your typing/web browsing etc doesn’t get sent to Microsoft).

I havent, I may not do it.

Win 7 Pro is working well, so dont see a need to change.

Win 7 Ultimate works fine for me, I can see no advantage to upgrading at the present time.

I don't have a problem with WIN 8.1 but for reasons unknown to me some windows updates that went ok on the desktop were either missed or removed by later updates (minimise window was one) on the laptop so that's going to WIN10

Win 7 Ultimate works fine for me, I can see no advantage to upgrading at the present time.

Very easy update on all our computers from win 8.1 to win10. I had an issue with one of the laptops because its system partition was out of space, also for some reason none of the computers did the auto update so I manually installed it. In any case I thought it better to have an actual copy of the software on CD in case of problems at a later date.
Its good to see the start menu back though in a different format which I dont mind too much.
Overall the new OS seems stable and fast and "almost" fully compatible. The only app that didnt work was my very old copy of MSmoney but the problem had already been solved by some smart dude online so all fixed now.

I would definitely recommend the upgrade. Just one thing to be aware of for those who use Media Centre in Win7 ultimate or win8.1 pro, it doesnt exist at all in win10.

That's one of the reasons why I'm leaving Heather's PC alone as hers has a TV card and works through the media centre.

I've downloaded some specific Toshiba system software and a new version the DVD player. It all has to be manually uninstalled then replaced with the new lot.

I did the upgrade, but have since backed out back to Win7, as there were some issues with my ATI video card and overscanning on my monitor. Catalyst Control Centre could not be used to change the overscan settings, and whilst I did have some success with some registry hacks, I decided that there was no real advantage in me upgrading, but the experience was probably the best I've had from MS in OS upgrades. Maybe for machines that are only a couple of years old, but being a laptop, mine did have a few issues that I just don't have the drive to fix these days. Now that I'm out of the industry, I'm more interested in my media home server(s) and still playing with Linux, XBMC, RasPi's and stuff like that.

My desktop runs 8.1 which works fine. With win 8.1 and suds the old computer still does what I want. I could not go to 8.4 as the cpu lacked some function. Have to see if 10 is happy.

I was a Windows software developer and Win 7 was my fave but 8.1 has many admirers as well. The other day I was listening to an ABC RN techno show guest who said Win 10 is a suspect upgrade coz it is a very big upgrade that can cost some people excess data charges and more importantly is a "free" download that includes many invasive data collection practices and has many intrusive ads that cannot b disabled in the free version.
And wot happened 2 Windows 9? Skipped it.
I hated Windows bloat but had 2 work with it. The most embarrassing upgrade was Windows NT Technology. And wot did NT stand 4? "New Technology" - so it's Windows New Technology Technology. Brilliant.
And to quit Windows u had 2 select the "Start" button. GoodOnYa Bill Gates - yora genius! (Tho he's not there anymore).
Not worth the upgrade IMHO.

The laptop is now on WIN10.

I dumped the new edge browser as the default one ...... way to slow compared to IE11 on WIN8.1. Installed Chrome but IE11 is the default browser. Turned off all the live feeds as I don't need them.

So all I need to do now is put on whatever software I need for when we talk the laptop with us.

As mentioned before I didn't like the new Edge browser so I defaulted it to IE 11 instead of Chrome but and downloaded it so I could get Google as my default search instead of Bing. Sometimes I use Chrome and I can play with Edge as well.

I customised the install so nothing goes to Microsoft for that "tailored internet experience". We use Incredimail (POP) and that went on ok as did Excel, Word and Powerpoint out of Office 2000 though there was some doubt if anything before Office 2007 would work.

The laptop is a Toshiba one and though the OEM installed software worked ok some updates were done to make them work better with WIN 10.

iTunes went on ok and then updated so the iPod Touch will connect without a problem. One would have thought that Windows Media Player might have seen an upgrade but no; the version I had on board before still works and is much better (as old as it is) than the newer "Film @ Movie" app as it will only play one item at a time but unlike the WIN7 version won't play DVD's (same as WIN8.1)

AVG (free edition) updated as well and the GoPro movie editor might work as that had an upgrade about a week ago.

I'm not yet keen on replacing 8.1 on my desktop as I use that all the time where the laptop doesn't matter so much as it's only used when away from home and mainly to watch a DVD/Music clip or listen to music

A few days ago I put WIN10 onto DVD so no need to download again should the laptop need to be restored for any reason. Oh!! I noticed WIN10 isn't as fast as WIN 8.1 when starting up but faster than WIN7.

I will more than likely keep the laptop on WIN10 though I do have about 3 weeks left before I can roll it back should I change my mind.

WIN10 is downloading for Heather's WIN7 desktop as I type. More for curiosity at this time. The windows check said all apps were compatible but says nothing about Windows Media Centre which isn't supposed to work. Having a TV card etc. might make a difference to the set up and there's only one way to find out.

The only other thing of note is that Cortana isn't available in Australia yet though if you set to a US location/language it would work ok.

I couldn't get media portal TV side to work on Heather's PC. It wouldn't pick up the Digital signal from the Port Pirie tower. Might be ok if you live in the metro area of the city. So rolled Heather's back to WIN7..........no loss..lol
