1100A Brake Calliper Removal
« on: May 13, 2019, 02:05:32 PM »
Need to pick some brain cells here.

We've had our 1100AX for quite some time and I can do most of the sevicable items myself by referencing the manual but this isn't covered in any detail. I need to remove the callipers from the mounts and grease up all the slide pins but nothing in the manual actually states how to do this even when just changing pads. Never had an issue with uneven pad wear until the last pad change even though I could move the calliper freely by hand.

There has to be a first for everything!! Here's Alan needing advice- the chief source of wisdom on the ST1100!
I hope we have someone in the Forum who can help- we owe him about 100+ units of help.
I'm out- sold my ST11 ten years ago.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

By the way guess where your 1300 brakes come from.

Allan, the mount just slides off, it takes a little effort but isnt hard. The only thing keeping it on if I recall correctly is the little rubber nipples on the end of the slides.

Thanks Brock, I'll give it a go in the morning.

Will start with the LH Front since I don't need to remove that one when doing a tyre change.

Managed to complete the LH side though some leverage was needed to even move the caliper along the guide pins.

Some grease was still there but for the most part had dried out. Cleaned off the old grease and regreased the pins. All rubbers are ok so filled them with grease as well.

Took a few minutes to get both guides in together and caliper moving freely on the pins.

Checked the SMC linkage before remounting the caliper.

Pads are still ok but the inner showing a little more wear. Pads back in with the backing plate this time since they wouldn't go in when the pads were new.

Pumped up the front brake and I can see the caliper move as the pistions put presure on the disc. Checked the right side and nothing moves.

RH side done this afternoon which leaves the rear to be done.

Don't really want to remove the wheel just to grease up a few pins. Will look around and see what I can find to support the wheel while I slide the axle out.

You shouldnt need to remove the wheel, though you may need to pull the pads.

I could be wrong of course.
