'Honda' Cam cover
« on: April 08, 2013, 03:11:53 PM »
I'm sure you will laugh at this question, but hey, the only silly question is the one you don't ask.

How do you remove the shiny 'Honda' cam cover. I want to change the plugs and oil.

I soon found out that you don't have to remove the shiney chrome bolt just below the 'Honda'
name.

I have looked on the manual but cannot find the answer and have tried gently pulling it all to
no avail.

Getting more frustrated by the minute but everything is easy when you know how.

take off the small access panel to the left of the cover from the faring; pull the left-side of the cover towards you (away from the bike) - it will pop out, then slide it to the right. It's a little awkward, but practice makes perfect.

PS. not a silly question - we've all been there.

Edit: this is for the right-side cover.

As Ted says, it requires practice, and determination, because even when you're doing it right, it's very hard work.  Getting it back on isn't quite as hard, but still not a push-over.  For some reason the left one is much easier to get off and on.

The next thing you'll need is a funnel because the oil filler hole is ridiculously small and only the foolhardy will try to pour the oil into that hole from that distance.

There's a "how-to" for the plug service over in the "how to" section.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Thank you kindly boys for your replies, very much appreciated. :-++

The cam cover has been successfully negotiated only to find that the spark plug spanner
in the bike's toolkit is too large to be inserted. Oh well, I am going shopping tomorrow for the
new plugs and will also purchase a suitable (long) s/plug spanner to suit.

Also unable to remove the oil filter with my small circle/clamp type filter remover because there
is not enough room, next to the centre stand, to get a full grip and rotate. So...I will be
getting one of those little filter cap type thingys to fix that problem.

These, of course, are all 'once' ers and we should be right when I am over this initiation period.
But after having around 38 bikes in the past, I can't remember when I just went from one
frustrating job to the next on a bike. At the moment I feel like kicking something (here kitty, kitty!).

But make no mistake...I know it's all worth it because the bike is awesome. I love it. :thumbsup

Thanks again for your help boys.....stay tuned for the next episode.

Getting it back on isn't quite as hard, but still not a push-over.

I had more trouble getting mine back on than off, but it's due for another oil and filter change now, so looks like I'll have to practice a bit more.

Or the other method of removal that is successful for a short period only..."Grip it and Rip it"....that what I did the first time to have a look at the rear of the cover to workout the knack of removal, achieved now with a little more finesse.  :rofl

Must be something wrong as the spanner is the same size for 1100 and 1300. The only diff is that the hex part, where you use a spanner to turn with, is longer on the 1300.

As for the oil filter, remove the LH belly panel. It gives you a lot more room. A seatbelt type filter rench works best I find.

Here's a link to some info about a simple, cheap and suitable funnel.

Pete, I used a brake fluid 500ml bottle with the bottom cut off, screws straight into the 1100.

As for the oil filter. Go to Honda buy a oil filter with the filter remover tool. It is only about an extra $15
It just fits over end of filter and you use a socket.Worth it weight in gold. At Toowoomba Honda they keep them in stock, they are a genuine Honda part.

OR you can use the K&N filters that have the same size nut on them as the sump plug of the ST13.
