Alternator Drain ?

Hi ALL, Is there such a thing as a drain hole/ route beneath the ST1300 alternator? If so,what is the easiest way to check it is clear/working? Thanks.Ed,New Member.

You wouldn't want stale stuff in there when you needed to recharge the battery after a cold start!

Hi Brock, pretty sure I remember you from Burns Beach.Hope you are well.I remember chatting to some of the group & passed some Uk bike mags to one of them to keep.
On this drain thing,the alt sits in something of a depression in the engine casting which can fill with rain/wash water & affect the alt & the drain prevents this.
Am also researching this over here & will advise if anything useful turns up.Best Regards,Ed.

Hi All.A gent named "BakerBoy on the US site  ,  ST-owners.com   confirms that such a drainage channel does exist to drain the v beneath the alternator on the st1300.Will try to add the pic he supplied.Ed.

This is the hole that coolant will leak from if you have an issue, but may have other functions??

I'll try and find a link that "Shiney" posted tonight when I get home (bloody work).  It is under the 1300 section.

Ahhh that drain hole 


Yep it's got nothing to do with your Alternator......when you get a coolant leak under your throttle bodies from 1 or both of the 2 short right angle hoses the go to each side of the engine it "appears" through here.....


This is the most common of the coolant weeps from the ST1300.....


Main reason it occurs is the honda hose clamps are very narrow and it's safe to say they are in a buggar of a spot and although Mr Honda workshop is supposed to check tightness at service time he in reality doesn't.....so a weep starts.


The solution is new hoses, new coolant while your going, new wider hose clamps all round and face the clamps in such a manner that you can check very occasional.....all though once done you probably won't need to ever again.

Hi ST2UP. I reckon that you are right in that the weep/drain channel will certainly alert us to the event of a coolant leak and,happily for us, any other undesireable ,alternator -bashing liquids that might choose to appear in that natural Vee.
 All ex Pan 1100 riders in the UK are pretty well obsessed about alt destruction & this carries through when we own 1300s!( medication is available  )
In the meantime I will be making sure that channel(whatever Soichiro & his mates original intention was) is kept whistle -clean!. Thanks for your info.Ed.

One benefit of being over here is that the roads don't need to be salted, and alternator rot like what happens in the UK is virtually unknown. The old 28amper had it good points in such conditions.  Making sure the cooling system works is more of an issue over here, hence checking for leaks and changing the coolant.
