Title: Rear Tyre Replacement
Post by: ruSTynutz on May 25, 2020, 09:09:49 PM
Hi all, just wondering if I could get some advice...

This is the first time I've taken the rear wheel off my ST since I bought it and, being a bit of a mug when it comes to mechanical stuff, I was wondering if I need to take the final drive flange off the wheel when I take it in to get a new tyre fitted?

Thanks!  :beer

No need to to remove anything, just protect the disc while transporting, I wrap some cardboard around it.

Thanks for that, Jonathon...much appreciated!  :thumbs

Was just looking at the rear brake pads, it's looking like they need replacing soon too...bugger!

Whenever I transport my rear wheel to the tyre shop I make sure that all the necessary bits are protected by leaving it attached to the bike.   :grin

I'd probably do that too if I wasn't such a tight a*se!  :rofl
Seriously though, I don't think I'd trust any of the bike shops around here to do the job properly.

I'd agree with you on at least one point - I think very few of them understand what Moly Paste is, as distinct from Moly Grease.  I've recently bought myself a small qty of Moly Paste from BikeQuip, and I'll ask the fitter to use that, even if he thinks I'm being picky - "Just humour me and use it please".

I was thinking about getting some of that from BikeQuip too but the price keeps scaring me off.  :crazy

My local car mechanic, who happens to own an ST1100 gave me some of the stuff he uses so hopefully it has plenty of moly in it and does the job.

The price of the "Good Stuff" will be forgotten long after the quality is remembered, and you bike will thank you.    After seeing a tyre fitter just dob a bit or plain grease on my spline when he fitted a tyre, I changed to just taking the wheel in and using some Moly Paste when I reassembled it.

The dude that does tyres for my Beemer actually refers to a chart and then uses a torsion wrench on the wheel nuts.    ++

I know you're right, Pete but I'm having to be careful with the pennies due to this Covid crap..
Perhaps when I can get the missus back running her driving school again I'll be in a better position to lash out.  :grin
The stuff I have will have to do until the next new tyre...

By the way, it sounds like you've got a decent tyre fitter!  :clap

Speaking of tyres, I'm going for a Dunlop RoadSmart 3...so fingers crossed it does the job.  :X

I've read a few reviews and I also did a bit of a browse on here and saw there's been a few members using them.

Had the new tyre fitted today and took the opportunity to have a 90 degree valve adaptor fitted as it was always a pain trying to adjust tyre pressures.
I'd purchased the valve adaptors last year off ebay, figuring I'd get to use them eventually... https://tinyurl.com/yaxgecue
I also fitted my recently purchased tpms sensor while I was at it. All being good (no leaks), I'll refit the wheel tomorrow... :thumbsup
