No Traffic Lights
« on: June 01, 2020, 09:22:25 AM »
WA's major road infrastructure program "Northlink" was recently completed.

https://project.mainroads.wa.gov.au/northlinkwa/about/Pages/About.aspx

It has entailed upgrading and extending Tonkin Highway over a distance of about 50kms to full dual highway freeway conditions.
For me it means when heading north using the major highways I think the first set of traffic lights are 3,827 kms away just 40 kms south of Darwin.
This lead me to think about how far one can go on major highways without traffic lights.
I came up with:-
West/East and East/West, Mundaring to Port Augusta 2,350kms

 https://www.google.com.au/maps/dir/-31.9020477,116.168337/-32.4833598,137.7588109/@-31.9024267,116.1666479,18.44z/data=!4m2!4m1!3e0

North/South, from 40 kms south of Darwin to almost Bunbury 4,158 kms.

https://www.google.com.au/maps/dir/National+Highway+1,+Humpty+Doo+NT+0836/-20.5705294,118.4384079/-33.3315025,115.6915612/@-22.7160976,114.9337376,5z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m10!4m9!1m5!1m1!1s0x2cc0a77dc87bedd9:0x47b42c97d2cb8be7!2m2!1d131.0735548!2d-12.6134057!1m0!1m0!3e0

I think the only place one may need to stop would be turning right off the Stuart Highway in Katherine.

South/North is about 8 kms shorter due to traffic lights at the Australind turn off only picking up north bound traffic.

If I have missed any traffic lights please let me know.
So how about a couple of new far rides???

An interesting challenge, but not one that would be too interested in, I'll leave that to some of the Far Riders, or others like interested.

No intersection signals, aye?  And even not one set of pedestrian signals in any of the towns you travel through.  Pretty lousy on pedestrian safety you lot in NT, SA and WA, wouldn't get away with that in VIC.

I think the only place one may need to stop would be turning right off the Stuart Highway in Katherine.

What about fuel and pits stops?  Would the travel gods smile upon you and place a servo at that intersection?

Going North, it basically bypasses Perth, and comes to the Brand Highway ant Muchea. There are plenty of fuel stops on the existing highway. Now if they made it into a 3 lane each way Freeway, that would make for a fast trip, though it would get boring.

Going north from Perth you continue onto the Great Northern Highway to go up the middle or take the exit to the Brand which goes through Geraldton and traffic lights.

Michael the only town of any size you would go near is Port Hedland and the main road goes around it.
