So I leave on an IBA ride to visit family in Adelaide and this is my revised route. I decided to go this route as its a little more traveled and the roads just looked a little more ...... shall we say 'freindly' for this ride.

this is my proposed route with fuel stops and a sleep over at lightning ridge .

any thoughts or advice or general musings?.....all appreciated.

I've traveled that route, (well, as far as Walgett) on my way home from Townsville via Dubbo and found the road to be in mostly good condition apart from quite a bit of roadworks going on...mind you this was probably 6-7 years ago so hopefully the roadworks have been completed by now... :crackup

Also, from memory quite a few trucks use that route...with a number of road trains heading back & forth from Charters Towers.
It's also a fair hike from Charters Towers to Clermont...something like 350k's??? with just a road house roughly halfway between.

If you're happy to do a 1000k day, I find Roma is a good place to stop for the night.

Cheers :)

About 3 weeks ago I did Lightening Ridge, Walgett to Bourke and roads all good (for western roads) with very little roadworks. Watch out for goats (most roo's have died from the drought) and the wind will be strong on the flat country. Put 2 to 3 psi more air in your rear tyre to slow the wear of the long flat straight roads.
Bluey Motel in main road opposite Bowls club is clean/cheap in  Lightening Ridge. Hot pool also very relaxing (get in small pool first).
I stayed at Kidman Camp in Bourke and ok but out of town and $$$.
Enjoy your trip.

Goats generally tend to mind their own business and don't jump out in front of you.  I stayed at the Major Mitchell motel in Bourke and was quite happy with it.

Oh yes the b**tards do, I have the flat spots on my tyres from when about six of the buggers jumped out in front of me near Brewarrina.
