Heated Grips
« on: July 16, 2021, 09:37:52 PM »
When I bought my ST1300 it had Oxford heated grips already fitted...
They had been working okay but recently I noticed if set at 75% they would turn off after a minute or so.
This got me thinking about buying a new set as they can be picked up on eBay surprisingly cheap.

While doing some research I came across another brand (Whites) that attracted my attention as they don't have the separate temperature controller like the Oxfords and look much more OEM.
The Whites controller is built into the left hand grip and comes with 5 heat settings. A different colour led indicates what setting it's on.

Now I know the Oxfords are supposedly the beez kneez but I really liked the look of the Whites Heated Grips so I ended up buying a set...

Stay tuned for a review once I get around to installing them... :thumbs

When I bought the Versys and asked for heated grips the bike shop said forget the Kawasaki ones and go for Oxford ones.  Mine don't have a percentage setting but have six settings.  I've never had any issues with it.

I do like the look of the "Whites" as I'm a fan of useful and low visual impact accesssories.

Cheers all... :thumbsup
I did notice in the specs that the "Whites" don't draw as much power compared to the Oxfords and from reviews I've read they don't get quite as hot either.
I don't think that will bother me as the Oxfords were pretty damn hot on the 100% setting...

I suspect mine were quite old as they only had 4 heat settings, 30, 40, 75 & 100%.
To be honest I never really used them much as I found them hard to switch on. It was only recently I finally found an easier way, I had been trying to turn them on with my index finger previously but found it was much easier if I just used my thumb!  :||||

Sure you don't have the 50% too?  This the type of switch for my Oxford grips, which were dealer installed in Aug 2013 (gee, I've had the ST nearly eight years), the switch on the CB1300 Oxford grips had (from memory) OFF, LOW, MED & HIGH.

Although I may have had trouble switching the Oxfords on with my index finger, I don't have any trouble whatsoever raising my middle finger...  :grin  :rofl

On the Apollo Bay RTE back in April I noticed that the old Oxfords had finally given up the ghost so I figured it was probably time to retire them to the scrap heap...

With the weather being decidedly un-motorcycle friendly lately, I figured now was as good a time as any to get out into the garage to finally fit my new (now 2 years old) heated grips.
Fitment was fairly straight forward although I had to "persuade" the grips with a mallet to get them onto the bars. There was also a fair bit of mucking around to get the left bar end refitted but I got there in the end with the help of my grinder.

Wiring up should have been easy as you can hook them straight up to the battery but as I was in no rush to get the job done I decided to use a "relay" to switch them on with the ignition so there was zero chance of them being left on.

I was hoping I could tap into some of the wiring for the rear taillight but that looked like it was going to be easier said than done...

Luckily I spotted a red wire lying loose up near the back of the duck tail, obviously a leftover from something the previous owner had had fitted.
After finding that it was only "live" when the lights were on, I ended up using that to trigger the relay...bonus!  :runyay

Now to find a suitable location for the relay...not as easy as I thought it was going to be...  :think1

When I fitted my airhorns 2 or 3 years ago I'd fitted the relay on the frame gusset behind the right-hand side cover so got to wondering if I could also fit the heated grip relay in a similar spot. Unfortunately there didn't seem to be anywhere really suitable but then I remembered I had a dual relay laying around in my electrical bits & pieces...Perfect!  :thumbs
With that fitted in place of the original horn relay there was just enough clearance from the side cover...Yes!  :runyay

With that sorted it was a simple matter of running the wiring, reassembling everything, and the job was done...

Time for a quick spin to check all was in order.

I started the engine to let it warm up while I was putting my helmet, jacket and gloves on and by the time I jumped on the bike, the grips were already nice and toasty...Woo-hoo!
All the heat settings appeared to be working perfectly on my brief ride but I guess I'll need a decent ride to find out how effective they actually are...Stay Tuned!  :popcorn

Awesome work mate, they look like a nice set of heated grips :thumbsup

It looks like the button to turn them on and off is part of the grip, is that right?

That's a very impressive control device.  Others require much more clunky panels (e.g. Oxford).  Even the factory ones are inferior, requiring a difficult search in the dark to find the right button, and an invisible light in the day.
Nice tidy wiring, too.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Thanks for your kind comments, guys!  :beer

Correct...that was the main reason I went for them!
I also like the idea that each heat setting lights up a different colour...blue is 20%, green 40%, yellow 60%, orange 80% & red is 100%...  :think1
