3 maintenance questions - brackets, springs and pegs
« on: October 26, 2013, 11:30:09 AM »
Hey guys, quick questions:

1: Im fitting the police spotlight brackets to a PY model of bike. I bought the longer bolts too (however, I've just found out I bought 4 longer bolts, when in fact there are two short ones and two long ones with different part numbers - doh). Anyway, the question is: Will the indicator/mirror covers fit or do I need some special ones? There seems to be about an inch gap, but that may be the incorrect bolt talking.

2: Im also replacing the centre stand spring. Is there an easy way to install the new springs?

3: I need some highway blades still. Who has some they would like to sell?

Agreed with Brock they will fit nicely

2: Im also replacing the centre stand spring. Is there an easy way to install the new springs?

I have never done this before, make sure you take photos and post it up so we know to  :thumb

3: I need some highway blades still. Who has some they would like to sell?

I think Tackleberry has the ones Tipsy made me, i dont think he is using them, send him a message.

I've forwarded the centre stand spring question over to http://www.my-mc-phoenix.com as there's quite a few members who may need to remove the stand for rust repairs etc. Especially England with all the salt on the roads.

Thanks heaps for that, hopefully someone comes up with a response because its pretty bloody hard

On the upside, I've done an oil change with filter, flushed the radiator and topped up with fresh fluid, new fuel filter, installed some ROX risers, polished the exhausts, cleaned ther wheels and hooked up the trusty old GPS again.

I posted this somewhere else, and have done this on an old Yammie XS650, but have had no need to try it on my ST yet.    Good Luck!

"I learned a great trick for stretching a tension spring, to get it back on the hooks without too much difficulty.
Stick one end of the spring in a vice, push it right over to one side, and poke a washer in one of the gaps that will open up between the coils.
Push in the opposite direction and stick another washer in the opposite gap
Continue to do this, adding washers until the spring is long enough to enable you to hook both ends on the hooks.
When you extend the spring by putting the centre-stand all the way down, all the washers fall out."

That won't work on our centre stand springs. Here's a  new one without the secondary inner spring. The side stand spring is similar but can be fitted by hand.

This from "Up Over"

Quote ".......on the longer straight part, a pair of locking- or water pump pliers (depending on physical strength/desperation regular Lineman's pliers might serve too...) and a thin object like a 4mm screwdriver to guide/lever the hook over the stub will do the job.
Probably easier with a second person helping by balancing the bike from the RHS since having the main stand at a 45° down angle provides the shortest distance/expansion on the spring, but I've also done it with the ST on its kick stand, whilst the angle of the bike is not really aiding the process.

A more helpful instrument can be found in most motorcycle workshops, a small transverse handle with a thin steel hook attached at its center (a 'spring-puller'), normally used to install/remove the springs/clamps holding the 'quick swap flanges/couplings' of moto-cross or race-track exhaust systems/silencers, or to handle the steel springs on the shoes of drum brakes (so most automotive suppliers/well sorted hardware stores should have such on the shelf); you'd need a short version though to have enough clearance towards the ground when extending the springs downward over the center stand stub (the procedure is to hang the short hook over the upper, frame sided stub and then pull the other end downward to get it on the stand's pin; for safety I again advise a second person securing the bike, and maybe a short piece of 2x4 underneath the center stand leg so it won't fold fully down during the work).
That small instrument would even permit to attach the two springs one by one, requiring way less force. "

I used a spring puller similar to what Alan mentions. It just so happens that it came with the race exhaust I have fitted to the Suzuki - as it has a race style exhaust, springs hold the headers to the exhausts.  One other way to do it is to use a long screwdriver and pivot it against whatever works.  Without going out to look, the spring is not extended as much when the centre stand is up.

My centre stand spring is missing the rubber sleeve so it interferes with the sidestand spring.  I will have to find something that will replace the sleeve.  I have made do without the second spring for the last 100,000kms or so.

Thanks guys, but I ran out of time today. I think I'll just cable tie it for the moment and get the lads at the shop to fit it when they put the new rubber on

Hey Stutter

Mate, its a simple solution, I'll distract Tackelberry, you flog his lights and Highway Blades and run like shit..... Just don't let him catch you.... well on foot won't be a problem ... but just don't let him catch you.

I'll do a Sargent Schultz...... "I know nothing"

Seriously though, Tackelberry would be the closest "Geographically Speaking" expert on the 1100's give him ahoy.

Is there anything in the Workshop Manual that describes how to refit the Centre Stand Spring?    I've just spent some time browsing the manual and can't find it in the body of the manual or the index.   Perhaps someone else has spotted it.

Thanks Sabie, Tack actually only lives around the corner from my house. He's usually got something on, but we're figuring it out.

I got some spotties from Jaycar, the SL3919 Techlight ones. I think I'll just go down to Bunnings and pic up a couple of 6x65 bolts rather than the genuine part

And Johnny, I got the brackets and bolts from Partzilla for $126. Pricey, but easier than fabricating for someone who has no welding skills or appropriate tools. You only buy them once anyway :)

While I was under the bike today I decided to take on re-attaching the centre stand inner spring.
I put the bike on the side stand and lowered the centre stand about 30 degrees and put a small block of wood in to hold it there.  Then I latched onto the lower end of the smaller spring's straight section with my smallest Vice Grips (5WR).  On my fourth attempt, having visualised a Bulgarian weightlifter to inspire me, I got it to hook in with the main spring.
The stand definitely feels more strongly supported, although it didn't sag before the surgery.
So there.  Anyone can do it.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott
