Terrible waste of a nice old Chevy Bel-Air.
But yeah! They collapsed badly in a prang. All that sheet metal was useless in crumple absorption. The cabin of the modern car was intact by comparison.

The impact inside the car against sharp metal dashes was horrendous, particularly with no seat belts

I still prefer the look of the '59 Chev....most of those older US cars had a full chassis with the body bolted to it.
