I am just about to change the oils on my ST1300A. I would like your thoughts on an oill to use. I used Penrite HPR10 gas in my Beemer and I have checked that this is compatible with the ST. Please throw some suggestions at me.

Before someone throws a sarcastic "Oh no, not OILS again" at you, go and read the Oils Threads. There is a world of info in there before we mount our hobby horses.

There used to be one oils etc section, but some one decided to segregate the bikes

I have used Penrite HPR10 gas for quite a few years in my previous 02 ST1300
but since i had talk to the service manager I have decided to run Honda Oil in my new ST1300
While it is covered by warrenty. Then when it is out of warrenty switch back to Penrite HPR Gas
Penrite oil are excellent and also use them in my cars

I picked up my trusty steed from the dealer today and after hours of interesting reading I have tried Penrite 15w - 50 Diesel. Feels good so far. Only done 20k's on it this evening. What a pain in the friggin posterior is the oil filter to get off. The last bloke over-tightened it to be-geezus

. The Super-cheap filter remover barely got in the space and was pretty useless without a screwdriver in the right place levering it loose. Anyway another twenty minute job takes an hour. Using a RYCO Z436 filter. I was very satisfied with the HPR 10 Gas in my R1150RT Beemer. I love this ST. My eleven year old daughter gives it a double thumbs up as well.

I have some Valvoline 90 grade diff oil. The manual recommends 80. Could I use the 90 without creating problems?

A PM to Member "rocketeer" would be a good idea. He was our oil guru for a fair while. He hasn't been in here since June, but was always ready with good answers.

90 Grade wont hurt..

The 90 should be fine. I have used 75W-140 as I happened to have it, but it was full synthetic. As the ST uses so little you can change it as often as you feel like.

Go to a Honda motorbike dealer and buy a Honda filter and oil filter remover tool in a pack for about $35 I think
They are worth there weight in gold

and a genuine Honda part

$35 from a Honda Dealer, genuine. Stee-ruth. I will need to get me one of them. Thanks to all for the valued replies. I'll give the Vavoline 90 a whirl in the final drive. 'You know what I mean"

As I have said in another thread:-

A good guide to what oil works for your bike, is that if the gear changes start to get clunky and harder to do after a few thousand Ks, then the oil isnt right for you. Currently, I'm using Penrite HPR 20W-60 extra ten Diesel. Its been in there about 6000Ks so far.

Just done my first oil change on the mighty ST, oil i use was PENRITE MC-4ST 4 STROKE 5W40 Full Synthetic PAO ESTER not cheap $60 for 4 lits, it's always held together well in my DL1000 so well i didn't change it over my last trip 12,000km.

I have been using the Penrite 10/10ths 10W-40 the last few oil changes. It is a round $68 for 5 litres, but you can run it for the Honda change interval or longer, and it still feels great in terms of gear changes regardless of distance or being stinking hot. The MC-4ST is pretty similar in terms of the extra additives.

3.6 litres oil only, 3.7 litres oil and filter. If you don't know when the final drive oil was last changed may as well do it, as it takes very little oil. I do the final drive every few years, even though Honda does not give a change interval.

Every 36,000 kms or 3 years, which ever comes first........

Half way down below timing belt, same position under maintenance in my manual as well.

Alan is right, I was going off a photocopy of the maintenance schedule I keep in my bike log - seems like the last column is missing. I always change it it every 2 years or so anyway, with full synthetic.

there is a link to the manual of each model in the relevant sections. ie 1100 manual in the 1100 section.
