Added some more HID lights
« on: November 05, 2011, 07:23:03 PM »
Well, thanks to Tack' ( he had a set of above mirror light mounts  :bow :bow that he passed on to me), I have been able to add a set of those HID lights he has and a number of others have ,....well not exactly.  My choice was for the spot beam.  Now I actually agree with Tack on the Euro beam as it gives the wide beam and a spot beam combined in each light.  The spot beam by itself "supposedly" adds a bit more distance??? will have to wait and see.  I already have a set of FF50's converted to HID under the mirrors which give an excellent wide beam and lights up the drains plus a reasonable distance, hence why i went for the spot beam. Sorry about the blurry photo.

I think shoreline imports should start giving ozstoc & FarRiders a discount. They are a great hid for the price. I have a st13. with them mounted under the mirrors. BRILLIANT.

ps I think it was  you who told me to bite the bullit & buy the dick sing under mirror mounts :thumbs

I just bought some Narva Compac 100s and converted them to HID (one of my Narva Compac 80s did not survive the trip back from Queensland). Total cost around $180.  Just in the process of fitting them properly to the bike.  I was going to go a comparison between the Philips vision plus 55w bulb and the HID 35W but not much point - it is so dramatic that the halogen would not show up.

oops sorry,  :-[ make sure you ask specifically for either spot beam or euro beam
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Pair-4-HID-SPOT-LIGHTS-XENON-4X4-SUV-ATV-JEEP-Driving-/160549515603

Saaz, I used to have a set of 80's but no plastic cover for protection so ended up having one broken from rocks being thrown up from vehicle in front.  It was then that I started to look at the HID...and would never go back.  Even though my ff50 are HID they still look a bit yellow compared to the other lights...reason is that they are 4300K and the others are 6000K.  I prefer the 6000K and will change the others to this when they malfunction.

TJ,

with the extra lights installed did you have to up the alternator or do any other modifications to your bike to ensure they work properly?

No ,just the 40amp alt. besides the lights there are a number of other items connected on my longer trips: uhf, gps, iphone4, drift camera, heated gear, ipod, charging for the scala G4, used to run a second GPS but don't any longer. The bottom two lights are clearwater led and the rest of my lights at the front are all HID so all low power consumption.  I have leds set up on the back of the topbox including a brake light plus three extra orange leds in each of the the front blinkers.
Now with a bit of tweaking i should be able to get rid of the ipod and add a starcom digital from DMME

I hope you don't mind the questions, but how have you mounted the lights to your bike? especially under the mirrors, and do they increase the light visability at night?

I have been thinking about adding lights for more night travel both fog (low beam) and spot (high Beam) but unsure of the registration implications.

Fog lights need to go out when high beam is turned on, and only to be used in times of low vis (ie Fog or heavy rain) Its agin the rules to drive with fogs on all the time, even tho the wankers in their expensive sports cars (and Hyundais ) do it. [Hate those bloody red lights on the rear]

Driving lights are only to go on with high beam.

Its all in the aust design rules.

Happy for the questions.  If you do a search for "ST1100 under mirror light brackets" you will come up with a myriad of information which will allow you to shop around and see what other avenues people have taken, Mine are the Dick Seng model. In my opinion yes they do increase my night vision.  The one issue I had at the start was that I was using the OEM headlights so when I went from high beam to low there was what appeared to be a black spot directly in front of the bike.  This was cured by replacing the oem headlights with HID.  The lights above the mirrors are attached with the Police light brackets (thank you Tack'  :beer).

If you were only installing one set of lights I would agree with Tacks' recommendation as the one set gives broad beam and spot.

My bottom two led lights are not fog lights, they are a daytime running light (DRL).  There is again, a lot of research on the use of DRL's and the use of a set up that gives a triangle shape of light from the front of the bike. To me they are part of my safety set up.

Sac468, I believe is correct with reference to fog lights and driving lights.

I think the one disadvantage of the above mirror set up is that they look damn ugly but to me the advantages far outweigh  the one disadvantage.

Hope that helps

Happy to see they went to good use TJ.  Was thinking about getting them modified to be welded to my current ones for a set-up under the mirrors, but you sent the PM just before I made my mind up.

Anybody thinking about trying to track them down "JUST DO-IT" because they are worth it.

Want to see your set-up too saaz, because I have a single Coompac80 sitting here also.  I'll make a donation to the Salvo's if you send yours up to me.  Seeing as how you won't want it with your new Compac100's.

Tackle, no problems, would like to see it put to good use (I got my police brackets the same way so karma comes aroud again) . I would probabaly just put it in a box with some old marschal 909s I have (too big for the bike unfortunately).  I thought about putting it as a single spot under the nose but after seeing the converted 100s I just won't bother.

The ones I have are the Honda factory ones. Haven't seen anyone else making them. For the St13s I think Motorcycle Larry makes some under mirror brackets.  Some of the LED kits come with mounting brackets (Clearwater LEDs I think)

the Clearwater leds come with the brackets, for either the ST1100 or ST1300, undermirror mounts for the ST1100 on mine are the Dick Seng ones, you may like to do a google search for where you can get them as I think someone else make them now.

doesn't add up. Motorcycle larry has lights and brackets for 329 then on the same page the brackets for 99 and the lights for 112.

FYI:  Motorcycle Larry stole the Dick Seng bracket design.  I personally wouldn't buy anything from MCL.   :-(((

www.spoiledbiker.com has Dick Seng's approval to manufacture the brackets.

Just MY 2 cents.
