Alternator stopped charging

G'day, my 2000 1100 has stopped charging, It reads 0 volts output, I've read that there is a hole in the rear Alt cover which when a thin screwdriver is pushed into will bypass the regulator and give 12+ volts, I guess if it does then the regulator is at fault, could someone please point me to a post that explains testing or any comments?

That sounds odd, a voltmeter should indicate battery voltage at least..  How did you determine it was 0volts??

Hi, thanks for you reply, your correct my volt meter reads just under 12Volts across the batterysowith the engine running, fuses and connections are good, so I deduced that the Altrernator output must be zilch, I would like to see 13+ volts,

Hi Brock, thanks for the Manual, got an index by ay chance? I found the ater 95 circuit (Chap 17) first I must explain that the engine is not in a bike but my Trike, I have only recently done an engine swap and only connected the heavy wire to the battery, all by trike power comes off the battery and then to the Trike ignition switch, I left the thin wire Bi disconnected but I see from the circuit  it is in the charge circuit and will not charge if disconnected, correct?   Joe.

I have a 99 1100A and have yet to have an issue with the charging circuit/system; always been a need to replace the battery after the bike failing to start.

From 1996 all 1100's went to a 40 amp generator with an inbuilt regulator so any issues there will either need a new one or a rewire.

If the bike is running okay with the lights on then the charging circuit should be okay and it's more than likely the battery.

What led you to check the battery voltage? Was the bike not starting?

Hi Alans, I have a volt meter in the Trike dash, it shows 12V when not running and very slightly under 12V when running and when revved up, I'm now sure it is because I left the thin Anternator Bl wire disconected, I'll connect it up via the ignition switch tomorrow, Joe.

That is probably the voltage (Ign) sense wire.. Just looked at the circuit, its a Blue wire, and yep its as I said. Without it, the Exitr winding and the regulator are un powered. No out put
