Title: Border Run and continuing on around
Post by: saaz on July 22, 2015, 11:48:17 AM
As the Border Run is fast approaching I have had to do up some sort of ride plan for keeping on going around doing the clockwise loop. I have until about 8th September or so to get back.  I have more details for destinations in between the main goals, but these are flexible based on those places I might stay at longer, or might get going earlier. I have not allocated much time around Perth as that is for next March, but I am revisiting places I went to in the early 80s on the old Suzuki.

Basic plan - get to by this date:

Border Village - 31 July
Bunbury via the coastal roads - 5 August
Perth - 7 August
Karatha - 12 August
Katherine - 20 August
Darwin area - 22 August
Cairns - 29 August
Kaleen - 8 September

I have done Mackay south quite a few times so will not be taking that long to get back from there. I want to spend more time in the top end and FNQ if possible, so can adjust dates to do that. This is a touristy scouting trip, a proper trip for later on for longer. No plans for any IBA rides either. Around 15,000kms all up, so pretty cruisy.

Hope to meet up with as many as I can on your home turf for once  :runyay  I will keep up with what is going on probably more than normal, as will be more time at night not doing much  :beer

I'm envious Saaz. :well
I've been home from our FNQ epic for around seven weeks, and I'm champing at the bit to be on the road again.

Sounds like a great adventure.
Do not forget to pencil in a stop over at my place in Northampton, if it is convenient. I  am 50 k north of Geraldton and approx 480  north of Perth , depending  where you start from in Perth.
Plenty of room and facilities here for  the important visitors.
I find the coastal highway north from Perth a much more pleasant ride than going via the Brand highway, from Perth to Geraldton.
Cheers, Winston66

Thanks Wendy. The closer I get the more firm the dates will be.  There is another Trophy owner in Palmerston so I will see if I can meet up with him, he does shift work so will have to let him know rough times in advance. The weather today is terrible, rain, wind, got up to 9c., so north looks great  :runyay

Sounds like a great trip John. Feel free to drop in if you coming home this way.

I will know closer to the time about where I am going back. Seems ages away at the moment, but has a habit of creeping up slowly....

It now seems I have to allow for some bailout plans along the way. Mum is being moved from hospital into permanent  care and is very unsettled (at 96 and having lived at home until now, quite expected). So I may have to allow for getting back to Victoria at short notice from wherever I am. Some places like Perth, Darwin, Cairns etc are not much of an issue if I have to get a flight back and leave the bike, but if I have  a few  days spare may be a ride back the boring way to Victoria.  Just a contingency thing, not going to affect the ride as such.

There is always a bed here for you if you have to make a quick dash South from your place . . 😉

If your heater is on I may be there! It will be a bit cool at my place after 6 weeks of no heater

Not much to report after getting to the Border Run. An uneventful trip for me so far.

From BV I left withe the WA crew all the way to Norseman. Highlight was a dead camel, Pezzz has the pictures. Lots of wedge tail Eagles circling about.

From Norseman I went to Esperance overnight,  FR10 done. Not a bad spot but isolated.

From there on to Albany WA for the night. Mostly scrub and some farming land all the way. Prices for meals in these places was a shock even after the Nullarbor. Mains around $35, specials might be available for less than $20. That's the price for the mining boom.

Today was a slack 120km day, taking the Caves Road to Busselton. I went up the Cape Leeuwin lighthouse, 176 steps up but worth the view. I called into a few seaside places along the way, went past many wineries, breweries and cafes.

Tomorrow is 2 nights in Perth wandering around the place. After that the real trip starts as I have never been north of Perth, so most of my time will be spread between there and all the way around to Mackay. From then on have done most routes back to Canberra.

I didn't mind the ride up to Karratha though the with 600 km from Carnarvon to Karratha the last 200 never seemed to end. There are a couple side tracks as well......Exmouth (haven't been), Onslow and Pannawonica. We rode to the last two places on days off sometimes just to go for lunch.

I may just call just because I am there. Don't have to go back ever again if they are not interesting

Stayed last night at Winston's place in Northampton. Many thanks Winston, and he interesting projects on the go.

I took a detour from going straight to Carnavon, Port Gregory and Kilbarri. The coast was interesting, Kilbarri bigger than I thought, but the road out was as dull as the rest of the road to Carnarvon. Scrub and some stray stock keeps the concentration levels up.

I will work backwards from doing tourists thing from Derby, I have allowed five days to get there which may be too long.

Good to see you still up and going SAZZ.

I was a bit worried when you left Perth in the thunderstorm but I guess that your orange 1970 rain coat is still working a treat and you didn't get too wet.

Rain was a bit annoying, cleared a bit by Gingin, and after lunch it had stopped. The coast road was windy by enjoyable. Must be getting north a bit as got up to 31c coming into Karratha, 19 forecast for overnight. Time to repackage layers and wet weathers away a bit better I think.

I have Derby down as a destination on the 15th but will depend what I can book tourist trip like. Something to plan tonight/tomorrow morning
