Going to ask really stupid question


where is the dip stick for the oil on the ST1100A!

Isn't one, however there is an inspection window to check the oil - much more sophisticated.

There is no dipstick...,

The oil level is checked through the window indicated on the pic you posted. you may need a torch, and the bike needs to be on the centre stand on level ground.

SupaCheap Autos had it on special this weekend.  Two bulbs worth for the price of one.
Quite a good saving, as it's normally quiet deer.

ok .... this is the oil level on a flatish centre stand position. The oil is COLD.

Should I 'check' when it is warm .... like a car or when cold?

That is good, dont want it any higher. the oil should be between the two lines.

I check the level in the same spot on the centre stand both after a ride and waiting a bit, and when dead cold. That way you know what the level should be before a ride. On my ST11 the levels are the same for both. Between the carport and the garage there is a millimetre or so difference in the level due to slightly different levels of the concrete.

being angled "across the bike", presumably.  Fore and aft wouldn't make any difference.

Correct, the change is across the bike. And I should also have added that if you move the bike while cold, the oil level reading cannot necessarily be trusted, the same as if was on the sidestand when cold then put on the centre stand to check the oil level when cold.

The same goes for adding oil after an oil change.  If you watch it moving up the glass and keep adding until it reaches the top mark, it will be over-full!  That's even allowing for having run the engine to fill the filter.
Once you start the engine and stop it, it will be above the top of the visi-glass.
I know of an ST that had the internal seals blown by a mechanic over-filling the oil during a service.

Do you mean when refilling after draining or when topping oil between changes?

I've never needed to add oil between changes on mine yet. The last time I looked at the sight glass was the day I changed the oil in January 2014.

I meant adding when refilling during an oil change- I can see what I wrote isn't clear.

I have added oil between changes.  It's best done when the engine is cold, as noted by saaz.  I usually add around 250 ml a couple of times during 12,000 km, just to keep the level at the top of the range.
