NatRally 2017 - Route Planning
« on: February 07, 2017, 09:26:22 AM »
hiyas - I'm still refining my lap of Oz to coincide with the Wooli rally (map here). Diesel has advised me that the road between Killarney and Woodenbong on the QLD/NSW border is pot-holed to hell, so I'm looking at various options.

For those that will be heading to Wooli via Towoomba... what route have you planned?

Cheers, Rob.
ps. please don't hesitate to call out any other recommended changes to my plan - it's just a plan, and I expect it to change on the fly, but it represents the general route I intend to take.

Rob,

There is a nice road from Boonah, past the Maroon Dam that comes at near Rathdowney and from there you have a choice of Mt Lindsay Hwy or down through the Lions Road.

Note The Lions Road is currently closed for 6 months for bridge works. Should be open again late June/July.

It's early days yet, but our draft plan is to ride the short way over through western NSW, and the long way home via the coast.  This will let us explore many of the different landscapes that Oz has to offer.   :thumb

Hi Rob
The Tenterfield Casino road is a good ride . There is a fabulous pub at Drake.
There are some vintage bikes on display in the bar and the place is full of all sorts of memorabilia.
The bar and dinning areas are all slab timber furniture. They have good meals also
Depending on your timing we live in Warwick and will be heading down to Wooli on the Wednesday before
So you are more than welcome to stay with us  .Or anybody else traveling this way for that mater .
From here there are a number of ways to go all with lots of twisties If that is your style
Hope this helps
Peter and Marian

Here's another alternative: https://goo.gl/maps/A72nQhwvk2v

The road has a good surface, but only around 4.0m wide.  If you meet someone coming the opposite direction, you would need to pull over, but I didn't see any other traffic back in April 2015.  At around 29.8km (there's a dot on the map) the views from here are absolutely spectacular.

You keep climbing and you ride through a tunnel of trees and vegetation, the highest point is getting close to 800m.  It was 35C as I rode through Killarney, temp dropped to 25C through the rain forest.

Then there's Spring Creek Road, a slight alternative to another post which mentions Maroon.  Along my all sealed, except for a creek crossing, alternative you get an opportunity to see this:

Then there the Lions Road .......

Can't wait until I'm in the area to ride some of these roads again.

Is there another road?  The road shown on the GMap in my thread was okay on the way south from the Toowoomba AGM in 2015.

When I say okay, I don't mean fast road, sweeping bends.  It was narrow, tight and the surface was okay, much better than the Mount Lindesay Road from the Urbenville turn-off to Woodenbong.  That road was a shocker in 2013, although in 2015 they seem to have been progressively doing some upgrades between Legume and the turn-off.

I haven't decided to go or not yet but I do have a route in mind. Subject to change is the coastal route for the return trip.

Starting to plan my route up to the rally , just wondering what way some might be travelling from Victoria .

Started this a while ago.

Never too early to plan ...........

I'm not even 100% sure if I'll be attending the 2017 NatRally, as yet.  With a couple of weeks motorcycling and camping in January 2017, and then April and May in the USA and CA, a firm commitment ain't really possible until work leave and bank balances are checked.  This may not be until June 2017, but hey that's only nine oops, 14 months away.

So, here's what I've got in mind:

  *  Leave Sunday or Monday before the rally.
  *  Riding with one or two like minded OzSTOCers - not keen on more.
  *  Ride ~ 400km days, avoiding main highways as much as possible.
  *  A few stops for pics and soaking-up local history.
  *  Meandering either side and sometimes crossing main highways.
  *  Staying in country pubs, hopefully cheap bed and breakfast - more to spend on evening beers.
  *  Arriving Wooli Friday.
  *  Leaving Wooli Monday.
  *  Return trip similar theme to the trip there, but another route.

Any Victorians interested in joining me in such broad plans?

Well now I have registered, and already have a riding partner.

Our routes to and from Wooli are not yet planned and even when they are, they will be subject to change at anytime.   There are a couple sights / sites I'd like to see, 'new' roads to ride and some 'old' roads to re-ride.     Depending on other's itinerary and routes, we are likely to cross paths with someone.  It's always good to share the road with like minded bikers.
Cheers,  Williamson (AKA Michael)

have been getting Miss (Darth) Scarlett and Rolling Thunder readied for the trip to NR2017 Wooli and everything feels good... we're going to follow a similar route down and back, as we did with our caravan earlier this year…

leaving Mackay on Sunday 15th Oct, to Calliope, then Preston, then Kyogle and a few days in the Coffs Region… inspired by ST2UP, Pockey & Sicman’s recent trip up here, we’re taking a leaf out of their book and staying at Airbnb’s en route… we figure it saves us messing about with our tent each day and saves having to use it until two nights at the NatRally…

after Wooli, we’re spending the rest of our week in the Coffs Region with rellies and friends… we’re planning on returning to Mackay in the same fashion – Wednesday 25th Oct, to Kyogle, then Preston, then Calliope, then Home.

Its a 6, but I had to register it in her name until the roadworthy is done to transfer ownership, so no pensioner grants.
Have to take the car to the nearest Holden dealer (100km away) to get a small item fixed for the roadworthy to pass inspection.

Johnny,

Megan to Coramba on your second day is Dirt and generally REALLY not good Dirt.... ;-*

If you want a scenic route with some views and twisties etc try this.....as you have heaps of time and only a short day.

Uralla to Armidale then down the Waterfall way to Ebor (Waterfalls on the left coming into Ebor township) Then head into Dorrigo on the Waterfall Way....through Dorrigo for 1k then left onto Dome Rd and down to the National Park Cafe and skywalk :thumbsup. Followed by a run down the mountain road to Thora and back up to the top and turn left back at the top (opp Toilet) onto Mountain Top Rd rd for 1k and Left on Griffiths lookout Rd to the end (5k's to awesome views) :thumb.

Now back into Dorrigo and Right about 400 mtr past the Servo on the Waterfall way onto North Dorrigo Rd...(Trains on your Right) stay on this road all the way through Nth Dorrigo and the twisties out to the Armidale-Grafton rd then Right and into Grafton via some awesome twisties.

cheers
