It works like this...
Get a pic of your bike in front of an iconic 'BIG' tourist attraction (or thing) and post it here.
Name the town you snapped it in and just REPLY to this post - don't start a new topic.
I'll kick it off....
The Big Pineapple - Nambour.
She's a little old and tired now and not used as a tourist attraction any more. UPDATE: The Big Pineapple has now been restored and back in business.
This was the most photographed tourist icon in Queensland for many years (along with Sea World on the GC).

Diesel- that's a Regular sized dragline bucket. Isn't this thread for BIG versions.
So where's the BIG version of a regular dragline? ;D
Anyhoo, does that pic mean you're back from your IB1600 already?

You make a very good point Bill - I should have named it a BIG piece of steel or iron.
- Perhaps the BIG part of that was the effort went to to get the pic! :P
And yes - back safe n sound (and within the certification constraints)

A Big Whale, will let all know the location soon, still sorting out things, I got back home this morning..
OMG...I was going to post when you had that picture of you stand next to your ST.
You standing behind you bike doesn't equate to a "big thing"
I thought you were calling yourself a Big Whale, but then you changed the photo, now it makes more sense
-
That's what happens when one moves a pic from one place to another :fp Just as well I spotted it then...I haven't been called a whale for a while now :grin
Cheers
Kev
Yes - or even "Southern right humpback sperm Kev".
Now THAT would have taken some embroidery!
Sorry - I'll :spank myself.

Well how about two ST Owners in front of something big? Giant Rocking Chair just west of Cuba on Route 66. Peter is riding a Harley (with his wife) and I am on a Victory, thought it best not to put photos of those on this site. Also how about a first, an OzStoc patch in America. 13 hire bikes altogether, 12 Harleys and one Victory.

Strewth- I never realized there was a fake Ettamogah Pub somewhere in Oz. The real one is here near Brisbane:
http://www.aussieworld.com.au/web/ettamogah-pub.html (http://www.aussieworld.com.au/web/ettamogah-pub.html)
I'm looking for a pic of my bike in front- I got one somewhere- you know what these Hard Drives are like >:(
-
The "real" one is down near Albury:
The Ettamogah Pub is a cartoon pub that was featured in the now defunct Australasian Post magazine. The cartoonist Ken Maynard, loving empty spaces
and having nothing around him, enjoyed an area just outside of Albury at Table Top, named Ettamogah, thus christening the name of his now famous pub
the "Ettamogah Pub" . The first "Ettamogah Pub" of a chain of such pubs was built there and copies now exist in various parts of Australia including Sydney, the
Sunshine Coast and Cunderdin, Western Australia.

Have to agree with you there I went to the first one when it opened in 1986 on the Ettamogah Flats just north of Albury http://maps.google.com.au/maps/place?ftid=0x6b23dbc3d6e0f5dd:0x40609b49043ee60&q=,+New+South+Wales+Ettamogah&hl=en&ved=0CA0Q-gswAA&sa=X&ei=kQi_TtCBIITvlAWK1aBk&sig2=CuI9sOOrNq7-tMAAMnrnRg

Yeh scarp, I went to that one when I was on a coarse at the Bandiana Army Camp in '88 I think.
The story goes that when they put the truck on the roof, which hides the airconditioning unit, they put it on facing the wrong way. When this was noticed, the cartoonist drew the next cartoon with it missing and when the manager of the pub was asked where it
was, he said it had gone for service. The following cartoon showed it back in place but facing the way. Which is the way it is now.

Hi, Not again!!! I seemed to have turned another ride report into a Big Thing topic. >:()
Yesterday (02/02/2012) we had a ride to Port Pirie so we could do some shopping. Nothing really unusual about going there we go there quite often. Sometimes we put the rod in the trailer for Heather so she can play with the fishes for awhile.
http://g.co/maps/eb2hu (http://g.co/maps/eb2hu)
I spotted a shady car park space for the :bl11 and did what we needed to do, got lunch and walked back to the :bl11. Heather got her rod out and I got the camera out and took a couple shots.
:bl11 parked in shady spot in front of Port Prie silo's

The first picture was taken (29/01/2009) on the then newly sealed section of road about 70kms south of Karratha on the Tom Price road.
The second picture is the same place taken on 21/6/2009. Some time in March that year flooding wiped out the track (about 10 to 12 metres high) on the lower rail bridge and destroyed the less than 9 month old road section.

Number plates aren't funny. :eek
(The first element consists of two letters which show which one of the 41 regional DVLA offices in the country the vehicle was first registered at. This is called the "Local Memory Tag". The letter 'Z' is not used in this element.
The second element consists of two numbers which identify when the vehicle was first registered. This is called the "Age Identifier"
The third element consists of three random letters which give the vehicle its unique identity. This is called, not surprisingly, the "Random Letters". The random letters are made up using all of the letters of the alphabet except 'I' and 'Q', but any combination of letters which could be considered offensive are excluded.)

Have been trying to get this shot for a couple of month's now. Actually even before I got my ST...
So today it all lined up nicely, They were actually standing at the fence when I stopped but as I got off the bike they moved away but alas I got the shot.
I pass these two funny looking creatures every couple of weeks on my round trip from Young to Temora and back visiting my Daughter.

This taken on my recent sojourn up north. It is dark because it was dark!

Ok technically this shot belongs here.
As it is the shadow cast of my mighty ST upon the earth - therefore it is an ST infront of a really really BIG THING.
I may be biased but this would be the best photo I have ever taken. Still can't believe how well this came out in the setting sunlight.
-
WOW! AWESOME Rob! :thumbsup
Ya biased so and so! :rofl
Thanks for sharing.

Here's the bike in front of rail bridge crossing taken 29th January 2009 just after the newly sealed 90km section between Karratha and Tom Price was opened.
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4307/36200316195_4cf2506eff_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/X9U5NF)
Several weeks later a passing cyclone dumped some rain and the result was the picture below. The conrete ford crossing built to take the weight of triple and quad trailered road trains didn't last long. The height of the water also washed out (so I was told) the rail track on the lower bridge (25 feet +/-) as just behind me the water has to make a turn to the left.
Location http://goo.gl/maps/UNj15 (http://goo.gl/maps/UNj15)
This one was taken 21st June 2009. To open the road again they bull dozed the rubble etc to make a one lane crossing. We went along here a few months after this and the repairs had been completed, no doubt a little better than before.

Just shows the power of masses of water! Whatever we build soon buckles when Nature throws some effort at it.
It was fun zooming out click by click, getting a feel for the isolation of that location, and putting it in perspective with the rest of WA. Big country out there!!

getting a feel for the isolation of that location, and putting it in perspective with the rest of WA. Big country out there!!
We never felt isolated up there though in terms of distance from any where it is.

Bigger than a Castle
-
That's The Grand Hotel in Scarborough.
To get that shot all in frame Keith was stood in the North Sea.....Honest he was... :-++
We rode past it and this thread jumped to mind we had to turn round and grab a photograph.
Here's a bit of info on the hotel
Originally constructed in 1863, it was one of Europe's first purpose-built hotels, with a design based on the concept of 'time' - 4 towers to represent the 4 seasons, 12 floors for each month, 52 chimneys for the weeks and 382 bedrooms for the days of the year. This is a beautiful example of grand Victorian architecture and completely dominates the surroundings like a true masterpiece.
It has a total of 382 comfortably furnished en-suite rooms with modern facilities. Two Restaurants a cabaret bar and cabaret ball room.
And Gavo we have much bigger castles ...... :grin
-
"and 382 bedrooms for the days of the year"
No wonder winter seems longer in the UK- they have 17 more days in their year!! Wot thuh

It wasn't until we got home that and I saw that I stuffed the shot up. Being a sunny day could hardly see the image on the view screen and it was pure guess work. I don't like using cameras that don't have viewfinders for that reason.
Had I taken my newer cam which has a digital view finder as well the result would have been better.

You have to study and understand the time-space continuum.
It's not simple, but that's why he's a Doctor.
And well you may ask "who?".

Yes, but where do I get one of those Sonic Screwdrivers. I need one for the ST.

Fixed.
One of the kids got this as part of one of their Christmas presents. I thought it would be interesting in this thread because it shows a lot of 'Big Things' around Australia.
There's probably more. I know that there is the big Ned Kelly in Maryborough here.. doesn't really have any reference to Ned Kelly ever being in Maryborough, but the servo (where it is located) was once called 'Kelly's'.
-
There will be some who recognize these. They have to qualify as "big things". I should have put the bike closer, but I was too lazy and just wasting time until my coffee was made.

I at first thought they were DUKW, but I've since been told they are LARC's - same principle, just a different maker I think. These are at (the town of) Seventeen Seventy and are used for exploring the creek and wetlands. Very busy during the tourist season, I'm told. Very high maintenance costs. Much more than an ST....

Technically, it's a distributor, not a power station. Follow those cables back to their origin for the power station.
But that's the biggest distribution complex I've ever seen, I'll grant that!

Then you'll be disappointed if you see the big orange at Berri. It's been closed for years and I think not far from falling apart. Someone put one of the Wallaroo (ex Adelaide Rail) cars and left it to rust away.

I think this works.
We took this Sunday afternoon on our way back from Adelaide. We just managed to get some of the colour but had to take two shots so we get the bike in. I can only guess how faraway the rain bow was but 6 km later we weren't even close.....but the storm front dumped on Renmark Sunday night.

Cruise ship docked here this morning... there was one here just a couple weeks ago, but I was out of town.
Couldnt get any closer, roads were blocked to traffic to allow pedestrian access only.

We're on the way to the Rally, with a small detour to say hi to friends.
Today, we passed through Mooball, NSW, and we couldn't go past this Big Thing without stopping for a photo. You can find it just across the road from the Moo Moo Café.
Looking forward to seeing you all at the Rally.

I had to do a double take the first time I saw it. :eek
The funds raised could only buy the bits above the water line, so she now sails with a concrete bottom.
Commander Holbrook was the captain of the AE1, Australia's first submarine, and won his VC at Gallipoli when he took AE1 past the Turkish minefields in the Dardanells straits and sunk a couple of their ships, before returning through the minefield back to safety. The town changed it's name to Holbrook in his honour from the original Germantown. (Please correct me if I'm wrong, it's been a couple of years since I finished school).

If so, someone was very patient! And drank a few bottles to get that collection!

Yep. It's a metal mesh frame with wine corks wired all over the outside, but around the bottom it's starting to look a bit tatty from corks being knocked off.

The Big Scotsman at Scotty's Motel, Medindie, Adelaide, South Australia.
-
That Scotty has been standing for many years ++ ... I remember first seeing it as a teenager, some 50 odd years ago!
I was on a bus from the city to Elizabeth to visit my sister, and its sort of 'in your face' when travelling on Main North Road.
-
It does pose the question. What does a Scotsman wear under the kilt? According to the two young ladies that recently painted it, there is something there but that are not telling :o

There is nothing worn under the kilt, it is all in perfect working order.

Many years ago at Whyalla Shipyards, (which closed down in 1978) there was a device called a Profile Cutter, which followed a line drawing, and transferred details to a motor driven plasma cutter which followed the directions given and cut ship hull construction plates from 1 and 1/4 inch sheet steel.
A fly landed on the drawing and the profile cutter dutifully followed the outline of the fly which resulted in a 12 foot long, one inch and a quarter thick, steel cutout being produced. Apparently the fly flew away just prior to completion of the article, but Boilermakers manually finished cutting the portion of missed wing and one leg. It was displayed behind the construction workshops at the fitting out wharf, a standing joke for several years.
It is unknown what happened to the steel fly because it disappeared one night during 1966, obviously a well planned operation because of its sheer size, and it weighed over a ton and a quarter.
Would have made an interesting photo with an ST standing before it.

From 1949 to 1985 there was a large Migrant Hostel in the Adelaide suburb of Pennington. Recent migrants were housed on site in Nissan Huts and used communal facilities until they were integrated into the community. This site is now a housing development, but a park has been established which commemorates the areas previous use and residents. Part of the features of the park is a big plate, cup, knife and fork, in recognition of the large kitchen/dining facilities that were part of the hostel. You can read more at http://migration.history.sa.gov.au/content/finsbury-pennington (http://migration.history.sa.gov.au/content/finsbury-pennington.)

I notice that pics are being posted of items that are normal size.
I believe Diesel's original concept was to photograph bigger than normal size "iconic" or "tourist" attractions. Hence the big pineapple - many times larger than a usual pineapple.
Just sayin'

Yep- been mentioned in this thread not long ago. Normal sized tanks don't count, impressive as they might be. Show us one the size of a B-Double and we'll be amazed. :wink1
Just saw Draco's mea culpa. Can't blame you for Stimpy's bad example. :grin
-
The Tank is big, and appears to be in a public area, therefore an attraction. (Dont think I have ever seen a small tank)
-
It's actually a small tank, 30 ish tons, as tanks go. But the Leopard is very fast cross country.
The Abrahms is approx 60 tons.
-
And I've driven the Leopard recovery tank. :hijacked
We now resume normal viewing.

A great way to clear the head and see the sites.

Another short ride today to bag a couple of local Big Things.
The Big Apple at Balhanna in the Adelaide Hills. It needs a coat of paint.

Well done StinkyPete. I couldnt come close yesterday. I tried but couldnt get the ST in the boot of The Pug when I took it for a service. Instead of waiting around for 4 hours took the other two wheels along the river and down the beach. It is a big bridge though.
There is a brand new big item just built about 240km from home. Hope to visit it soon.
-
Big Sheep Shears at Hay
Dad had something like that and he used them to trim the lawn edges where the mower wouldn't reach; way back before whipper snipper things were invented.

I've just discovered a new "Big Thing" for those travelling west (or east) At Kimba, which we all know has the Big Galah, there is also a Big statue of Edward John Eyre and his aboriginal companion. It's at White's Knob Lookout a few kilometers out of town.
See... https://goo.gl/maps/VmgNWWzYwMs (https://goo.gl/maps/VmgNWWzYwMs)

Hmmm. I must go for another ride, and perhaps snag Cradock's "Big Akubra" as well. :grin
-
Big Orange at Berri in the SA Riverland. I been up that way for a couple of days with some mates, and this was one that I did not have.

SA has the "Marree Man" and now there's more pieces of large scale landscape art.
Here's two Big Things in SA, that I won't be able t photograph with the ST.

I went for a bit of a ride today, and added to my tally of Big Things. A ride report will follow....
The Big Akubra in the Flinders Ranges at Cradock on the RM Williams Way. It's not that big, and not very impressive.
-
The Big Edward John Eyre at Kimba SA. Beside the explorer is a statue of his aboriginal companion.
-
Another Big Wind Turbine Blade. This one is in Snowtown SA

A good few hours on the bike to get all of those. How any k's did you do today?

good one, Pete :thumb
Engineering firm here in Portland produces those blades for world wide distribution. I think from memory they are 42? / 45? metres long.
By the way... must be getting close to the time that the grape growers around Penola area start to put up their roadside Chrissy decos.
Not really big things, but interesting and innovative. Will have to do a photo run in the very near future.
-
It is a common theme on this web site. " work gets in the way of good rides" Would have been a great day. Definately jealous.
-
After Pete's Kimba adventure I decided to have a ride up to White's Nob Lookout myself.
Pete has all the close up shots so I won't go there.

Unusual to get the bike in front of a ship and since it was in port we rode over the causeway and took this. As luck would have it there are two people standing on the deck above the H in heavy which should give an idea of the size of this thing and what it is unloading. Taken at Port Pirie

But it's in neither of those either. It's in Rosetown.

One of my friends also said it's not a lobster, it's a crayfish as it doesn't have nippers. I'm not an expert on crustaceans so I don't know.

Rosetown is basically a geographical name, and only used as a derogatory, as in on the wrong side of the tracks. Larry is a representation of a southern rock lobster, or a cray, so no nips when catching them. Had a family friend who used to provide us with a share of his catch, even us young kids (at the time). Can't afford now 😡
-
The Big Windmill at Penong. This is said to be the biggest windmill in Australia, so let the arguement begin. :fp
-
The Big Oyster at Ceduna.
-
I got the whale and the windmill as well, but not the oyster. I also got the big 'farmer' on the return leg after our discussion in Border Village. You're right... it looks nothing like a farmer. I got the big galah as well.
I also looked up Australia's western and eastern extremes and calculated the halfway point across Australia would have been at Watraba, just east of Penong and a long way from Kimba.
When I get a few minutes to myself I shall write a trip report with a few photos.

The Big Whale at Nullarbor Roadhouse (It's really not very big)

This isn't listed in the Australia's big things on wikipedia but this is pretty big for a yabbie, Moonie, Queensland.

The Big Cod - Tocumwall, NSW
Made in 1967, this was Australia's second Big Thing, and I've already posted the one at Swan Hill that we also visited and photographed.

I love magpies. They're very intelligent and will respond to a suitable whistle. They never quite tame, but they will become trusting.

The Big Chopper
I used to work on that chopper, its certainly big enough. I have flown it as well. I also worked on the DC3 (not that one) at Pearce, and its bigger than a Cessna 172.

I never considered this a big thing, but I guess I will now.

I got this one because Cerebral Knievel set me a challenge.

The topic is "STs in front of big things"
The DC3 is a big thing compared to a bike but it's not a "Big" DC3 since it is the original size so for me it's still ok.
-
The Big Saw Blade - Deniliquin NSW This was a bit disappointing.
I never considered this a big thing, but I guess I will now.
It is because saw blades usually don't come in that size; The largest working one I have seen would have been about 1500 mm (5 feet) in diameter in what once BHP Whyalla.
-
Basically it wasn't on the wikipedia list when I looked at it.

I seem to recall as a kid, seeing a working, rather large, circular saw blade at an old timber mill, which was used to turn Cedar trees into planks. The one I saw was also steam powered.
Similar to this, but from memory bigger.

Going back to the first post the idea I think was to get the bike in a Big touristy type object. Whether the size of the object is important or not isn't stated though you have hinted at it in the second or third post. In general I think some of us just get something that is bigger than the bike as the post title implies.

You were correct, it was an NDB called Stonefield NDB (waypoint VILAD). It was inatalled 11th May 1981 decommissioned on 26 May 2016. It T56.
The previous NDB at the same location was installed 29 Sep 1976.

Also, it is an NDB with a Folded Flat Top antenna. This compensates for the 1/4 wavelength being around 30 metres.

Big Tyre Swan - Lyndoch SA
Back in the 1960's these were all the rage, and there's plenty of instuctions on YouTube detailing how to make one. I have know of this Big Swan for a while, so went for a ride to bag it today. A polite knock on the door to let the home owners know what I was doing, was answered by an old lady who invited me in. The old chap that made it is now wheelchair bound, and he told me he made it around 20 years ago from a tractor tyre, and cut it using nothing more than a small kitchen pairing knife, lubricated with plain water.

Here's an odd one for you Gaz:
The Big Poppies on the Devonport waterfront:

That's as close as I could get without offending the locals. But they are definitely the "Tall Poppy" variety.

Nindigully is famous for its big burgers. I passed on that and shot the Big Boomerang. It's a pretty poor excuse for a boomerang, I know.

The Big Cockroach - Dublin South Australia
It's a rubbish photo, but being just on the highway and with soft ground underfoot, is a quite hazardous spot to stop. I'm pleased to have snagged a photo of the Beemer of this SA iconic Big Thing, and have included another photo from the interweb.
-
Hahaha , has to be photoshoped
Dont it
-
Nope, I've got photos of it too, but as Pete says, it's not really a good spot to pull up.
-
Hahaha , has to be photoshoped

No Gaz, it's not Photoshoped, but a proper photo taken today on my phone and hence the poor quality.

I have now seen every thing or nearly .
The big coacroach i take my hat off to you .

You've seen that, the fly and all the other objects at Lower Light now Gaz.

Big Hands at the main entrance to the Centenial Park Cemetery ay Pasadena in Adelaide. This new sculpture was only unveiled in December 2018, so it's quite new. I like it.

It's the first I have heard of it and one I could easily snap up on the daily commute.

I rode into the depot this morning to check the shift swap board for next saturday so rode back this way to collect my mail from the Adelaide GPO.

The Big Boxing Croc at Humpty Doo
I think it may have been me that challenged Pete to errr, a couple of challenges ....
OzLap 2019 Challenges, see how many:
* RTE's can you squeeze-in in 63 days?
* How many pics you cab get of the ST, errr BM, in front of Big Things?
* See if you can enough pics of your motorcycle in front of township signs to spell supercalifragilisticexpialidocious - only one wildcard (for the X, permitted).
* See if can get the grandest Grand Tour.
* See if you can get the most royal of Royal Tours.
I hope we don't live to regret this, my right index finger is already suffering from RSI on the Say Thanks button.

That’s a beautiful looking bike whatever you put it in front of.

Big Marlin - Cairns

Big Boab Tree on the Great Northern Highway. I stopped at this spot to get a photo of me with the pack of lifesavers (another story), and later that day realised that it was shown on Google Maps as The Giant Boab. The second photo is an internet photo of the same tree. The third photo is of a much photographed Big Boab Tree close to the turnoff to Derby.
-
Wow. Not bad for someone who was too focussed on enjoying the ride to stop and take photos! :rofl
There were plenty of Big Things that I passed, but did not photograph. Too committed to a long day's ride, too wet and slippery on the roadside, just got moving and didn't want to stop and get off again, previously photographed with my previous bike, etc etc etc.

Big Tuna at Edenhope
Edenhope or Eden?
When we were kids, family holidays were at Boydtown (other side of the bay from Eden), Dad got invite from a local to go Tuna fishing on his trawler, came back the camp ground with two bigguns in the boot of the Mark 11 Zephyr, so big they had to lie diagonal and the boot lid wouldn't close. Not as big as above though.
-
Big Tuna at Edenhope
Edenhope or Eden?
Edenhope. I posted the same fish in my Harrow Ride Report. It's not actually a tuna, but a fish from Saint Vincent And The Greanadines (country in the Caribbean sea).

I have had this photo since my Halls Gap RTE trip of 2017 and not once considered it to be a big thing, just curious to know why Molly Meldrum was planting a bottle?
According to a Japanese girl I am connected to on instagram these rocks on the other side are big seeds. I even stopped there on the way to Tassie and took more photos of Molly, but still didn't twig they were seeds.

Hey Bodo, I reckon those that those three beauties take your "Big Things" count to 51. :thumbsup
-
I've probably got more in archives because like I said yesterday I have many that I didn't recognize as big things at the time. Even the rocking horse at Gumeracha I didn't think of as a big thing until I saw it on thr wikipedia page, and that thing is huge. :fp
-
Had a look at some old photos, back in the day when I didn't really pay attention to big things. The first one I have was Kapunda's Map The Miner but no photos with the bike in it. It was one of many when I went throught the wikipedia page after the Queensland trip and thought "I have that"
In my inaugral overnight trip on two wheels what wasn't a bicycle I got the big orange tree which sits on top of the information centre in Waikerie. I once played this in the "where is this?" thread.

Here's the Big Buddha at Sellicks Hill south of Adelaide. It's a 18-metre-high granite statue of Buddha, on the site of the Nan Hai Pu Tuo Temple which, as far as I can tell, is still under construction as there is restricted access to the site.
Although Bhuddist related, it's not actually Bhudda, but the Goddess of Mercy. I did not know this until recently and also called it the Big Bhudda.

The blade at Mount Bryan is bigger than the one at Snowtown. Which of those is standard I can't say but both are well bigger than the kwaka.
I would presume the Leigh Creek tyres are from some mining equipment. It's a mining town. Well it was. The mine closed about a month after I went there in 2015. Part of the reason I went there was to see it before the town disappeared. I am planning to go through there on my way to Kulgera in may (weather permitting).

I'm not sure of the point of your argument, but I thought for a second I agreed with you.
Mine is that the original concept was pictures of STs in front of abnormally large representations of objects, such as the Big Lobster in Stanley (rather than in front of an especially fat, although freshly caught crustacean, even if it's twice the size of similar examples of the species).
Hence my question about the tyres. It appears they are off some machine, and hence only bigger than bike tyres, but normal for that machine.
This debate was flogged to death maybe 20 pages ago, and I lost interest since the difference in concept seemed to be fundamental to the exercise. However I had another momentary burst of care.
I'm back to "careless".
-
There's a few things in here I didn't consider to be big things myself although they are big (ie. silo art, salt lakes) but will go with the flow. Is the red elephant at Hatton Vale bigger than a standard elephant? It's in here and on the wikipedia page for big things. The wikipedia page lists a windmill in Coffs Harbor which I scoffed at because as far as windmills go it's not that big.
-
the original concept was...
I suppose you could make a similar argument for the motocycle quotes thread.

I suppose you could make a similar argument for the motocycle quotes thread.
How's that work?
"Do you have a nice quote about motorcycling? Post it here (no rubbish or derogatory crap please)."
All the quotes are from books written by motorcycle riders about their rides. I do let everyone down by not getting one in daily, but I guess the ones I do are the "Motorcycle Quote of the Day". Or are we talking about "size" here?

I seek the collective wisdom of those playing this game. Are the big silo art paintings that are springing up all over the country considered to qualify as "Big Things"?

This is a commemoration to the olympic games football tournament having been played at Hindmarsh Stadium. I was in living in Brisbane at the time and some games were played there too. One of my passengers was a cleaner at the Gabba and she was moaning after the game between Japan and I think Brazil. As the Japanese have a custom of taking their rubbish with them they left their area of the stands spotless and she was moaning she lost two to three hours work because there was bugger all to do.

I was 42 when I stopped playing. I hate these "end" signs. Why don't they tell you what the speed limit is from this point on. It's also pointless here as there is only three metres left of road and once you go arund the corner it's 50 unless otherwise signed.
-
... I hate these "end" signs. Why don't they tell you what the speed limit is from this point on. It's also pointless here as there is only three metres left of road and once you go arund the corner it's 50 unless otherwise signed.
Extract from Rule 21 (3) of Road Safety Rules in Victoria ...
- A speed-limit sign on a road applies to the length of road beginning at the sign and ending at the nearest of the following—
(a) a speed-limit sign on the road with a different number on the sign;
(b) an end speed-limit sign or a speed derestriction sign on the road;
(c) if the road ends at a T-intersection or dead end—the end of the road.
A 100km/h installed prior to a series of corners with a lower advisory or design speed, or 50m to 100m in advance of a T-intersection / dead end, is viewed as possibly sending an ambiguous message to some drivers.
In my 45 years with or dealing with RoSTA/RTA/Roads Corporation/VicRoads/Department of Transport (currently), this topic has been raised every few years (when some new bright spark has a brain fade). We all sit around a board room table, discuss the options, and generally decide to keep the "end" signs.
In my current role we installed (with VicRoads' approval) "end" signs, a couple of years later, VR decided that these signs were no longer appropriate and we were instructed to remove them, we refused, a VR minion threatened legal action, nothing occured, signs stayed, a couple of years later VR policy changed, "end" signs remain.
If anyone has a better idea on how to end a speed limit, suggestions welcomed.

A 100km/h sign in advance of a T-intersection ? No!
-
Why would the new limit be that at a T-junction?
In the photo above any sign is pointless, but I've see a few going out of a town saying 'end 50' and can't see why it can't just say 60, 70 or whatever. I saw few in Tassie that do that and I know there's one at Second Valley that does that.
-
At least they had an end speed limit sign! :p
How often have you slowed to 40kph for roadworks only to find at the end of it the workers have forgotten to erect an end roadwork speed limit sign?
Technically you're then required to plod along at 40kph until you eventually come across a higher speed limit sign or a T intersection sign... :well

Yes. And Victoria is the only state you can do a u-turn at traffic lights unless signs can tell you you can.
I think you meant "can't?
I actually like that law! :grin
-
I mean can.
In Victoria you can do a u-turn at traffic lights unless signs say you can't.
In other states you can't unless signs say you can.
-
that's what I said...lol
-
My sentence is still correct.
-
Yes. And Victoria is the only state you can do a u-turn at traffic lights unless signs can tell you you can.
Shouldn't it read: Victoria is the only state you can do a u-turn at traffic lights unless signs tell you you can't... :popcorn

Never mind... :rofl
-
Yes. And Victoria is the only state you can do a u-turn at traffic lights unless signs can tell you you can.
Shouldn't it read: Victoria is the only state you can do a u-turn at traffic lights unless signs tell you you can't... :popcorn
No because in other states there has to be a sign you can.
-
So...it should say: Victoria is the only state you can do a u-turn at traffic lights without a U turn permitted sign, with all other states you are not permitted unless there is a sign saying you can... :grin :fp

at least Five, actually :grin :thumb
The Big Winch up on the lookout, The Big Boomerang, The big Miner, ... and a couple of others that will keep you guessing :grin
The big bug and a big lizard? I've got most of them, but not with the bike in the picture. I am sure I posted the Winch last year.
-
Technically, the Opal Beetle across the road from the Boomerang is not a 'big' thing, but well worth a look and a picture... and only 100 metres away
from the Winch
It is a big thing. It's a big beetle (bug) made out of a beetle (vw) with legs and everything.

The Tank is big, and appears to be in a public area, therefore an attraction. (Dont think I have ever seen a small tank)
I think it was in front of the Prisoner Of War camp. I should have checked out the Japanese garden when I was there.

I am pretty sure it's not a T-rex, but it could be a generic 'dinosaur'. Not all of them were big so this could be a big version of the original.

I looked at that Listing (https://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WMPEZX_Tyrannosaurus_Riverside_Vic_Asutralia/) and it didn't really say much.
I also didn't gain much confidence with it's accuracy after reading this:

Have someone take your picture with your GPS in front of the Dinosaur.
If your by yourself try to get yourself if you can. If not take a picture of your GPS and the Dinosaur.

Big Coke Can - Solomontown SA
I've known about ths one for quite a while, and bit the bullet today and went for a ride. Much of the paint has faded, and the white vertical markings on the side of the "can" have faded a great deal. It looked much better a couple of years ago and I should have photographed it then.

The Big Pigeon - Rundle Mall, Adelaide
I rode in to the city at 0630 hrs Sunday morning to get this photo of Adelaide'as newest Big Thing. It's quite a fun thing, as the Mall ias full of normal size pigeons. A security guard gave me the evil eye, because vehicles are banned in the mall, but he said nothing.
I picked this up this morning. #110
I wasn't as lucky with security guards though. Of the three one came up to me and asked why I bought the bike in the mall so I told him to get a photo of the bike with the chicken, and as soon as I was done would turn around and go back out again as I came in and out via Gawler Place. As soon as i said chicken I knew it was't a chicken but couldn't think of the word for pigeon.

True to my word I did turn around and ride straight back out. What I didn't tell him was I was going to have a crack from the other side and get the Malls Balls. I'd done that before but today got it in daylight hours. (http://www.footballnews.com.au/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

Went for a snappy ride to run in a new back tyre, the hills were deserted, always wanted to do a pilgrimage to Strath to see the Ken Blake Memorial, I met Ken in the 70's when I was racing Motocross, I remember as Stephen Gall was the offroad champ at the time. Hell of a feat to beat the GOAT Giacomo Agostini in 76, he was one of the SA greats along with Gregg Hansford. Ken Blake beating the World Champion was a big thing and so is the statue o:)

I think that you are both being very, very generous.
There was a Black ST1300 and Classic trailer parked in the service station two weekends back, but since then it has visited Mudgee and a few other places, and I don't there is any image residue for the pic.

Looks like an inflatable thingy. Despite the four tie-downs (that I can see) and given some of the winds coming from the west in that area, the next time you see it, it may be in Bendigo.

It only took me almost five years but I finally found it (looking worse for wear). Unlike you I didn't go off the tarmac for it.
