Anyone done an LED dash light upgrade to their ST1300? Lots of different colours available (Colours available are RED, GREEN, BLUE, WHITE, PURPLE and PINK) Unfortunately it looks there is some soldering to do the upgrade, you can buy the upgrade kit here:

Not for the faint-hearted, methinks. There are a lot of LEDs there to be unsoldered and resoldered.
I'm surprised he's offering to do it for £55 which includes LEDs, fitting to your clocks and royal mail return postage for Pommies.
It looks like for £70 he'll even take the panel out of your bike for you!

Does anyone know what size LEDs are used in the dash? Probably cheaper to buy from somewhere like led lightsales. It would be quite a job (even getting the dash out would take a little bit of time).... Another mod I would like to do but don't have time for :-(

My old 1100 was easy to change the light colours, I picked up coloured sleeves from the auto shops and they slip over the standard globes. From memory I installed higher wattage globes to compensate for the covers. I installed blue covers on the 1100 which while not as pretty as the 1300 was better than stock.

This job is far more involved that putting a coloured filter over a globe. This involves removing numerous LEDs from the PC board and soldering in their place brighter LEDs. Their size is critical, hence the kit. You would have to dismantle your panel to ascertain the size of the LEDS before you could order them from a general LED supplier like Jaycar etc.

The will either be 3 mm or 5mm or surface mount.

I’ll be the guinea-pig for y’all. This looks super. I figure that even with my clunky mechanical skills my first career in electronics should have left me with the necessary skills for this.
Give me a couple weeks and I’ll post up a photo of either my bright new dash or a badly charred circuit-board lol.

We did have a post (tried to find it) on this a couple years ago where one would need to send off the 1300 gauge cluster to the US and they would return it with your chosen light colour.
Would be nice if one could fix the odometer from resetting to zero at 200,000 km

I was tempted to do the upgrade myself as well (used to work in elec manufacturing and design), but decided I was to lazy :-} the LEDs are cheap enough, but dismantling the body work and fiddling with it all put me off. If it looks amazing it might make me think about it again.

These days with tri coloured LEDS and light colour controllers you could have virtually any colour.

Hey Gary,
I worked as a design engineer for EDMI from 1984 - 1997. At that time EDMI was a general purpose R&D and manufacturing outfit. We would research and design 'pretty much anything' and do manufacturing runs which were typically 50 to several hundred in a batch. Scoreboards, racetrack timing, industrial ovens, moving message boards, golf course irrigation, 1000Vdc lab power supplies ... you name it. Our moving message boards were red only, partly because we though red/green was lame. In those days we pined for and imagined the cool stuff that we could do if we could get a blue led that was (a) equal brightness to the reds and greens and (b) affordable.
The trouble with this style of business was that while we had a lot of fun and tackled some really cool projects there was never enough manufacturing to recoup the often enormous R&D costs, so we were always cash-strapped and the staff worked stupid hours to get projects over the line.
In the 90's the company moved towards its current specialty of electricity metering - initially substation-level metering and then including domestic metering, and towards the end of the 90's got bought by overseas interests and grown into a much larger entity. But I was gone by then as I decided to move out and start my own IT business.

Very interesting.
One of my former colleagues who was made redundant last year has just got a job with Downer -EDMI at Brendale calibrating those meters. :grin
