Title: ST1300 Sunburnt Trip Computer
Post by: WizFizzle on July 20, 2020, 06:51:48 PM
Hi Guys,
Can anyone point me in the right direction to getting this repaired?
Checked with my dealership today and they can order a full replacement but this is at $2200.
Hoping that there is a place that can just replace the screen.
Cheers,
Shaun

Hi WizFizzle and welcome to the forum from SA   :hatwave
I'd get on the phone to a bunch of wreckers and see what you can find.   I've had great success in the past by going down that path for a final drive unit, and saved mega bucks.

Ouch!  That could be expensive, Pete's suggestion is the way to go, might be a while for one to come-up at a wrecker.

Pre-ST1300, I had a CB1300 with a notoriously inaccurate speedo.  I fitted bicycle computer, calibrated it correctly, worked fine.  It was a wireless Cateye unit, cost around $40.00.  Had to modify the litte round magnet sensor to fit onto the hub, and a bit of fiddling around with the pick-up unit and an extension bracket on one of the suspension tubes, and after a bit of trial and error was successful and I was happy with the result.

A Google search on wireless Cateye computer and sensor will give you a better idea.

Here's once that's cheaper than a new one.

OK if you're happy with MPH and kph inner scale.
I presume the accumulated mileage is "remembered" in the instrument cluster.  Or is it in the ECU?

On a related subject, chatting about life and STs with CallMeSteve and he reckons he could make the digital display brighter by replacing the LED behind the LCD.  I'd like to see that.  Just thought of it, looking at the back of that one for sale.

Thanks Biggles.   I forgot about the mph vs km/h issue.   :fp

I’d better stop talking about that and actually do it. That is if I can find the white LEDs after 2 years !

I’m a bit of a chicken when it comes to working on anything with an engine,  but since I’ve also got a set of spots to install I reckon It’s time to man up to the task. Watch this space.

Yep that’s the kit of LEDs that I bought.

What colour did you buy?

I got the white ones. Because red, orange and green are last-century, and even blue, once the holy grail in LEDs, is now last-decade. Plus everything else about STrudel is white....

So after some research and procrasting I've decided to dive Into this job. I managed to get hold of another instrument cluster from another member on this forums but reading on I found if I just plug and play the instrument cluster it won't transfer over the odo and i don't like the idea of having an incorrect odo even if it means just taking or adding a few kms I'd rather have it to what the bike is at originally so it helps with maintenance schedules etc. I've pulled apart the unit tonight and figured out how it's put together and it's suprisingly simple. I've pulled the 7 segment display off the wrecked dash now so I should be able to just mount it straight onto the original one to fix my issue 👏👏

After about 1-2 hours of tinkering she's finally fixed! Honestly the hardest part of this was getting the fairings back on but besides that it was all pretty simple and straightforward

Looks great.  Is it brighter than the original?

I'm headed down the same path for the sunburnt dash. Only one I can find is a wrecker in Sydney that only does pick up, and I'm in Brisbane.

I never  did ask three years ago whether the km on the replacement reflect what your bike had, or the kms of the donor bike.
