Electrics problem (after thermostat change)
« on: September 22, 2015, 11:17:08 AM »
Hello guys

I have very strange problem involving electrics, my bike died while riding to work on York St in Sydney CBD yesterday! Quite hairy.

That happened exactly one day after I replaced the thermostat ( I disconnected the temp sensor while doing it, not sure if that can be the cause).

This is what happens when I turn on the ignition switch:

•   dash lights come on (oil light, neural light)
•   headlights do not come on (they should do as you know)
•   fuel indicator works fine
•   temp indicator plays funny – it tilts all the way to HOT when bike is switched off
•   when I try to switch bike on, temp indicator becomes responsive as I push starter button and tilts all the way to COLD
•   engine starter doesn't turn on either

the bike just sounds dead apart from the dash lights and the temp gauges moving when i press the starter button,

Anyone has an idea on what the problem should be?

Thanks

Sounds like a pinched wire, maybe the right hand switch cluster wiring loom.

Carefully remove the tupperware and check for jammed wiring.

Thanks Brok I'll have a look under the bird's nest (ex-police bike) lots of wiring has been pulled out and left hanging.

and so it should be for a techie!       :grin

hi all

so the bike has been working intermittently in the past few days (i didn't use it though), clear sign of a pinched wire / short contact somewhere i would say.

before i did what i am writing below the bike was running fine.

this morning i decided to first check the connections of the wiring looms that sit in the little metal harness in front of the air filter box.

so after taking apart half my bike i accessed the connections, undid them all, cleaned them and done them up again, but now the bike shows no signs of life at all.

only the oil light comes on when i turn the switch on, the rest is all dead (including the temp gauge tilted all the way up to 'hot').

the only thing i remember i might have done wrong is that i did not disconnect the battery during the whole process.

could i have toasted something because of this?

thanks very much guys

You may have caused a fuse to pop when you removed the tupperware, its a good place to start.

thanks Brock.

are all fuses located at the back and left side of the bike (near the battery) or there's more?

alright, i checked them all again, they're fine.

I wouldn't know where to look elsewhere.

p.s.
i have very limited experience with electrics (if that wasn't obvious already).

thanks

hello!
my crazy bike still has problems with the electrics.

i havent had much time over the past weeks to look at it but yesterday if found some time and checked all connections and wires and... the bike suddenly started to work fine (lights, instruments, engine etc..).

And then again it started to behave strangely after i put the fairing back on! Frustrating.

Here is what it does now: no matter in what position the ignition key is in (off, on , locked), the starter motor keeps turning, while everything else is off!

I have to disconmect the battery to make it stop.

Any ideas what the problem could be? Perhaps a faulty ignition switch? Or a short / open in the circuit?

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like the wire loom from the right switch cluster may be pinched and the ignition switch loom, poer is getting from the battery to the starter.
