F1 Light issue

"When accelerating above 100kph the F1 light comes on solid and doesn't flash a code.
 It will clear once the bike is switched off and on again.
This issue will occur every time I accelerate quickly to just above 100 but if I accelerate slowly to just above 100 sometimes it won't come on.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? "

Knock sensor wiring maybe, or perhaps a blocked 5 way connector??

Is it 100kph or 120kph?. The ST1300 computer will monitor the knock sensor and flag an error (if detected) by lighting the F1 light if the engine revs are held over 4200rpm (120kph+) for more than a few seconds.
If the light has come on at any stage you will be able to read it out by following the appropriate procedure as shown in the workshop manual.

The FI light has been coming on intermittently since Southport TAS.  If engine is turned off, light goes off, bike runs normally for an undetermined time, if FI light comes on again, repeat above.

Problem start with the GIpro (gear indicator) playing up, not working, working intermittently and finally, not work at all.  Same time, speed started playing up, working intermittently and finally, now not work at all.   I isolated GIpro (white four pin plug coonector under pillion seat), everthing worked okay for a short time, but now no speedo, no odometer, and FI light coming on intermittently.

I have diconnected all leads from the battery and will leave for a day or two, hopefully this will allow ECU and / or other items to reset themselves.

In the meantime, I'm reviewing other information I can find via the internet, but if the combined wisdom within OzSTOC and ST-Owners has any words of wisdom, they would be appreciated.

Sounds like the speed sensor may have failed, seeing it affects all the items mentioned. I believe its not a hard fix.

If it is the speed sensor it is a really easy fix (I could do it). The only really important thing to remenber is to tie a piece of string to the existing wiring conector on the sensor so when you pull the old sensor out you can tie the string to the new sensor and pull it back up to connect it to the bike wiring. It would be a real pain to put it back together without the string.

Bike sitting idle with battery disconnected for best part of the week, battery on full charge, took time to isolate the add-ons (heated grips, battery charger lead, lead for heated hand grip for pillion, GPS & 12 volt accessory socket - all had been added at different times and looked a bit messy - so consolidated all of them), then everthing reassembled, short ride, no speedometer.

Sounds like the speed sensor may have failed, seeing it affects all the items mentioned. I believe its not a hard fix.

Okay, where do I start on that one.  New one, or just remove, clean, re-fit?

If it is the speed sensor it is a really easy fix (I could do it). Sound like some words of experience, any guidance will be welcomed.  I would like to have a layman's attempt before I need to take it to a Honda dealer, I'm guessing they'll know how to charge on supply and fitting.  Might even cost more that a Tassie trip.

Hi Michael, sorry for the delayed response I only got back from port Melbourne to Glenalta on Sunday in some fairly poxy weather. The following is the post I put up earlier when I replaced my VSS:

I ended up purchasing the VSS through Partzilla (including the "O" ring) and had it delivered after around 10 days and saved a bit over $50. (I reckon it was around $150 Aus $)

The only other tricky part is screwing the new sensor bolts (2) in and not cross threading them as you are working by feel. The upshot is, if i can instal a vss, pretty much anyone can. It was a good feeling to see the speedo working again and i gave it a good test the week before last by riding from Adelaide to Sydney and back over 5 days and the bike didn't miss a beat.

I reckon it took me 1/2 hour all up. If I remember correctly the FI light threw error code 11

Not fixed as yet, but the post from Langers has pointed me in a direction that I intend to go, Ill let you know more, when I know more, or vice a versa.

Still not fixed, hadn't got around to it, but found time to make a start this afternoon. There a good thread (well time will tell) on the STOwners Forum, with some instructions and pic - I guess Shiney hasn't around to this fix yet.

The suggestion is to remove part of the RHS fairings and the centre cowl.  I have stripped the bike of both side fairings and panel, thought I give them a good clean and polish and a chance to get to some of those out of the way nooks and crannies and give the bike a really good clean (might even give JD some competion at the next RTE).  Geezz, the ST sans fairings is mighty, mighty ugly.

Other tip is that you loose / spill a bit of oil on this project, so I thought a good idea would be an oil and fliter change, only 5,000km since last oli and filter change, but what the heck.

A new speed sensor is on order 156 frickin' bucks, will pick-up before next weekend and finish job.  Just hope I know where all parts, screws, clips and wire connectrs go.

Oh yeah!  On front, lower inside panel of RHS fairing is a small jiggy withe a wire connector which I'm guessing the jiggy is a temperature senor.  Any ideas?

Thanks JD for confirming my thoughts.

Got a call from the Honda shop, speed sensor has arrived, went to pick it up this AM, not there.  Whisky Tango Foxtrot???  Spoke with manager, he assures me Tuesday, will probably fit it Friday.

With fairing removed, took an opportunity to do some spring cleaning.  Shyte there's some baked-on black spicks 'n' specks, probably some bitumen, tar or asphalt (I remember more than one road worksite with nice fresh surface).  Despite cleaning the bike after most rides, this stuff is in such out of the way places, I have not got it before.  Sprayed a degreaser and detergent mix which makes a gel like substance, to soak the black muck, but alas it's still there.

Any suggestions from the brains trust?

There is an upside though.  Whilst the bike is stripped, I have also taken the chance to tidy-up some of the wiring for the accessories, heated grips, GPS, USB plugs and charging lead / plug.  All of these were installed a separate times and wiring was looking pretty shabby.  Not anymore though!

ruSTynutz is correct, WD 40 will dissolve road tar. I use diesel mostly, works well, just try not to get it on rubber hoses etc.

Repeated application of WD40 has been largely successful, with some longer term application and perseverance, the Mighty ST1300 might looks as clean as JD's.

Anyhows, speed sensor in, tested on centre stand, working okay.

Given all of the fairing bits that are off the bike a good scrub, was tempted to put some of the small pieces in the dish washer, but had a better idea ...... put 'em in the shower. I sat and scrubbed 'em until the hot water started to run out.

If anyone else thinks this is an option for them, my tip is to do it whist wife / girlfriend / partner is out and not likely to come home - like happened to me.

The site of me sitting naked in the shower, surrounded by Honda bits is probably not a pretty sight, and something the better half didn't want to see, and her comment (something along the lines of) she didn't know that I loved the Honda THAT much.

Now to get all the fairing bits and pieces back on, hopefully in the right order.

Far Canal. 

There's no way I could've done it in 1/2 hour.   As explained above, I removed the fairings.  This allowed for better access and visibility of the speed sensor, but still had difficulties.  There is no way I could have done and stayed sane and maintained skin on my knuckles otherwise.

The only conclusion I have is:
   *  The speed sensor on earlier models is more easily accessed.
   *  Mark has tiny hands.
   *  Mark has Xray vision.

The half hour didn't include the preliminary stuff (like taking the fairing off - and it certainly didn't include getting naked in front of Scarlett). The half hour was getting the sensor out, the bloody cable up and connected and the new sensor bolted in. I wish my hands were small, it'd make replacing the LHS headlight bulb so much easier.

You could’ve told me the “preliminary stuff” was a half days work.  Re. the LHS headlight bulb, just take off the LHS fairing.  Just consider it “preliminary stuff”.

I have been known to replace a perfectly good bulb just because the LHS fairing is off only because the bulb has been in for a while.
