How to ... ST1300P Solo to dual seat conversion
« on: August 19, 2014, 11:43:09 AM »
Hi everyone,

Recently I had done the conversion on my 2006 ST1300 ex police by removing the Solo seat and replacing it with the dual seat.

An extremely big thanks to John (Z900owner) for his helpful lending hand and knowledge to get the job done!

Not many discussions around that explains how it's done, so here is what you need to know.

Before pic:

You will need a dual seat from a regular ST1300 and the following parts from your local Honda motorcycle store:

What the parts look like:
Note: I'm not sure what the rubber washer was for, it wasn't needed.

So the first step is to remove the solo seat bracket on the left of this picture, the middle latch mechanism and the rack on the back.

It will then look like this:

Proceed to remove the rear plastic/tail light section:

You will now need to remove the four brackets featured here, using a hacksaw or an angle grinder (cover the fuel tank and surrounding area with fire proof blanket protection)

We used a hacksaw and hammered down the remaining metal pieces so they were flat, bit messy but it works.

Grab the latch plate and bolt the latch and insert the cable into it as shown:

Re-install the latch plate:

Remove the LHS pannier lock and place the lever and run the cable around to it:

Re-install the tail end plastics and rack and re-install the pannier lock as shown:

Try installing the seat, if it doesn't latch down properly you have to ensure you had ground down the cut off sections enough.
Once it fits properly, use some black enamel paint to touch up the cut off sections so they don't rust.

Job all done, except don't forget to install some pillion pegs.  Most rear pegs from different bikes fit.

Hope this helps anyone that wants to install a dual seat... now you can ride on  :wht13 :wht13 :wht13 :wht13 :wht13

so its totally different to the  ST1100's which is  reversible if you want to go back solo.  On the ST1300 once you cut off the 4 brackets  there's no going back...
great write up and pics  ++ alchemiST   thanks...

Remove the RHS pannier lock and place the lever and run the cable around to it:

It's the LHS pannier lock, but they'd soon realise that.

Good description with clear pix.   :thumbs

Yeah eventually I will have this seat modified to make more comfortable but it isn't too bad so far.
This mod will also suit anyone wanting to put on an aftermarket seat to their police model ST1300 as well.

This is a great walk through - I'm about to do the same on my bike.

Is the front seat locked down in this configuration?  I notice that you don't have the "bracket" that goes on the back of the drivers seat for the tongue on the passenger seat to slide into?

Thanks!

I seriously doubt that the 1100 lock is compatible

:EatCakemo Thanks for the reply.. I ordered the correct parts through Honda this morning and yes you are right the 1100 is totally different.. whilst where here I'm looking for a full set of crash bars as the bike is used as bbc a Marshall motorcycle at events where there is mostly slow riding and as such the chance of dropping it are greater.. Thanks again

I can recommend them.  The pillion loses an inch of foot space, but she'll thank you if you drop the bike.
And so will your panniers and mirrors.

The event on the weekend at Pottsville was fantastic.. the second seat was not used and she hit some mud n went over no damage.. whew.  The engine guard did its job very well.. the bike went flawlessly and still returned great fuel consumption whilst doing its thing.  Not to sure about the police escort who got a flat front tire after we spoke about rubber before the race.  Sorry I jinxed you mate no hard feelings huh.. all in all still a fantastic bike and prefer it to the 1100 now..
