Title: Oil Change
Post by: Piet on December 25, 2016, 01:27:06 PM
I did a oil change today and am going to try a Full Synthetic by Nulon.

A brief History:  When I purchased the bike I changed to PM lubricants and used a Turbolife PM413 after a really good read here on the site.  I liked the oil and would have stuck to it.  When I tried to purchase the next 20 litre drum I found the owner of the business really painful to deal with.  I even offered to buy a 200 litre drum but he still would not cover freight at full retail pricing.  It was time to try another product much easier to purchase.

I tried Valvoline XLD Premium 20W50.  Honestly I have not been happy with this oil.  I find that when it gets to operating temperature the gearbox gets clunky and hard to shift, especially going down in gear.  I also have had clutch grumbles from time to time, perhaps due to poor clutch operation on my part.  I will see how the new oil performs.  So I dropped the oil at 9026 kms.

I decided I would try something very different.  A Full Synthetic 5W30 Euro by Nulon.  Their page address is http://www.nulon.com.au/products/Full_Synthetic_Engine_Oils/Full_Synthetic_5W-30_EURO_Engine_Oil (http://www.nulon.com.au/products/Full_Synthetic_Engine_Oils/Full_Synthetic_5W-30_EURO_Engine_Oil)
I also liked the info provided on this site http://www.lessfriction.com.au/results/5W30/ (http://www.lessfriction.com.au/results/5W30/) where they tested it against Castrol, Mobil, Penrite, Shell and Valvoline.
The tests are but one measure but wear is an important one.  So they do the scar test on metal plate as well as metal ball.

Anyway for what its worth I will update this post on how it performs after some time to evaluate.

Piet,

Penrite HPR 20W-60 Diesel is the oil I use ( I think , its hard to check as the bottle is in the carport and I am in Thailand) it works very well for me.

Well the Nulon Synthetic did not last long.  1100 kms and I am swapping it out.  It might be a nice oil but it also meant rugged changes once the oil got hot.  I just don't like the feel.  So I am now trying the Penrite as suggested by Brock.

That confirms the experience of others.  Never used synthetic myself.  Hate to think all those dinosaurs died for nothing!   :grin

It's really better to use a 10-40W oil.  We regularly see temps above 30o.

BTW- have you only done 1100 km since December!?  Just down to the shops and back once a week??    :Stirpot

I prefer the 20W 50 extra 10. We dont need the 10 wt here in the west, too warm.

I'm using Penrite 10Tenths  Racing 15  15W50  here in Adelaide, and am very happy with it.  This is the same grade as Castrol's Activ 4T,  4 stroke motorcycle oil.

I'm not surprised...happy to be corrected...but reading Nulon's data sheets in the links provided, caution the use of this product in motorcycles. Within the FAQ's for this product it advises the user to read the product label with specific reference to boats and motorcycles in connection to the additives within the product.

This product contains additives suitable to use in my diesel which is fitted with a diesel particulate filter (DPF)...if you then read the info on the actions of this additive suitable for vehicles fitted with DPF's, it rapidly become apparant that the additive within this product will, in all liklihood, have adverse effects on vehicle that incorporate a wet clutch.

Nulon provide a semi-synthetic oil which functions satisfactorily in ST's.

Incidently, is it perhaps worth concidering the short and long term effects of these additives that may have been absorbed into the clutch friction linings?

Just a thought, the can :-)

Always used Castrol 4T in all my bikes ( 4 strokes) .
