I'm keen to do this, however the Waterloo Tourist park has no accommodation that suits me (sold out) and I've submitted a request to Elliston Appartments through their contact form on the website (twice) and have yet to get a response.

I'm pretty keen to attend this but as Bodo says, accommodation is pretty tight. I'd be happy to tent/swag it for a change but if Julie is keen to attend as well I'm not sure how I load a wife and a swag/tent on the same bike (and no, I'm not buying a trailer. I know many go down this path and all power to them, but I struggle to see the point of having some great lump of a thing attached to and following the freedom machine  |-i).

BTW, if I/we do go, I/we will be taking the ferry. We just returned from an Ag College reunion held at Coffin Bay over the weekend and using the ferry made the trip so much more relaxing and at $85 for the two of us and the bike one way (or about $56 for just the bike and rider), I reckon it's not bad value given how relaxed/refreshed you are when you get to your destination. I have no doubt the hardened long distance riders would consider the above an abomination - so be it.

I booked a cabin at the Elliston Caravan Park just a bit further out from town.  I gave up waiting for a response from the other place.
.
As for the ferry, I enjoyed the ride over a couple of weeks ago but would probably only use it again if heading south of the Birdseye Highway.  Ironically I headed north when I got off it on my previous trip and ended in Cowell just down the road.  Also depends on the sailing time.  If it means sitting around and waiting half the day I'll go around the gulf.

We will probably take the caravan and stay a few days, with the intention of decimating the local Tommy and Squid poppulations from the jetty.   Our usual stay is the caravan park near the jetty and silos, which is a couple of kilometers out of town.    I reckon it's where Bodo is staying.   See  https://g.page/elliston-caravan-park?share

He is heading off in early May to do a half lap of Oz with his neighbour, and therefore won't be attending Elliston.

Unfortunately I've read some pretty poor reviews for the Elliston Hotel.    :fp    We can either chance it, or get some food, drinks and nibbles from the local supermarket and do a cook up in the Caravan Park Camp Kitchen.

I usually take online reviews with a grain of salt.  It's human nature in that if you're happy you'll tell a friend or three, but if you're not you'll want to tell everyone.  I know I bought lunch at the roadhouse just out of Elliston in 2015 and it was awful.  I can't comment on the hotel though.

We have booked into the Elliston Caravan Park as well.
Regarding the Elliston Hotel - Julie and I ate there August last year and the food was good. I've read the Trip Advisor reviews and the negative ones tend to be from people who think their mutts should be allowed to join them in the outside beer garden. One mutt is ok, if you open it up to all and sundry then at times it's not so enjoyable for people who'd like a quiet beer so I'm happy for it to be a mutt free zone. The other negative reviews were generally from a few years ago and I note they have a new owner/manager. I'm not fussed either way really.

For those travelling to Elliston.......

Despite hat the maps and Street View show, the road from Kyancutta to Elliston is now sealed.  :thumb  This is the road   https://goo.gl/maps/poNX52F7QGKftbQ27
We travelled it in October last year, expected it to be dirt, and was pleasantly surprised to find it all newly sealed.

We are off Thursday morning, with the van in tow, and will have the kettle on for when you arrive.  Safe Travels.

I mentioned this in my Tumby Bay ride report and have already put in for my planned course to Elliston.  For the return leg I am doing the Port Kenny to Wudinna road.

Safe travels folks, we're heading up to Wallaroo Friday afternoon and catching the ferry Saturday morning. Pete, it's coffee, white with none for me and Julie has her tea with just a dash of milk thanks. See you 4ish I'm guessing. Tommies on buttered bread would be nice as well.
Cheers ... Mark

What are tommies?

I'll be heading off from home on saturday when I wake up.  I'm not sure what time I'll arrive but if border run Cedunas are anything to go by I am guessing 1500 hours.

What are tommies?

See  https://pir.sa.gov.au/fishing/fishing_limits/australian_herring

They are a smallish schooling fish, typically around 150mm long, and regularly caught from jettys and inshore waters.
They are very tasty when hot smoked whole, or filleted and simply  fried in butter with a touch of pepper and salt.    :eat

Think of me as I write my assignments out for my professional accreditation.

A glass of red (what else for a red rider) helping to grease the wheel (mouse that is) and the keyboard.

Only 6 more weeks to go :runyay

Julie and I got home about 5pm this evening after a short but very enjoyable trip across Eyre Peninsula to Elliston. After disembarking the ferry at Lucky Bay on Friday we rode to Cowell then up to Kimba on a surprisingly good bitumen road and then across to Kyancutta and down the recently sealed road to Mt Wedge and then Bramfield (ah, smell the herbs) and Elliston. Pete and Chris had the cuppa's ready and Bodo had beaten us to Elliston despite us leaving a day earlier.
Sunday we rode to Lock's Well, Mt Hope, Cummins. Yallunda Flat, Ungarra, Lipson (more herbs), Lipson Cove (an absolutely pristine little cove with 1/2 dozen camp sites, soon to be "developed" as a grain and mineral port - not surprisingly a few locals are a bit cranky about "progress" encroaching), Pt Neill and finishing at Cleve. Today we checked out Observation Hill (or colloquially known as Ticklebelly Hill) at Cleve (they had enemy plane spotters there during WW2 - 2 hour shifts, 24 hours a day - one wonders if anyone ever saw a plane) and Yeldulknie Weir before cruising the hills and making our way to the Ferry.
