Title: Lindsay's Progress
Post by: West Aussie Glen on March 20, 2023, 10:41:07 AM
I thought it was time to start a new thread for Lindsay.
As they say a picture is worth a thousand words.
This is Lindsay with wife May and one of their grandchildren getting some vitamin D out side of Royal Perth Hospital on Saturday.

What a lovely photo.   With support from family & friends, and his good attitude, Lindsay will do well as he adapts to the loss of a leg.

Lindsay moved to Fiona Stanley yesterday.
He is currently Ward 2a which I think will be the Rehab ward.

I volunteer in similar rehab ward, supportng folk such as Lindsay as they gain strength and learn the new skill they need.   Lindsay will do well.   :thumb

Hey all you good people. I just thought I’d give you an update.

This last week I made a couple of milestones. It’s not fun having to be wheeled to the toilet to do your business or to have someone shower you.

I even had to learn how to put a sock and shoe on, on my own.

Once I demonstrated that I could do that, the next challenge was to be able to transfer from wheelchair to bed and reverse with different heights. This is becoming easier.

Most recently I’ve been transferring from wheelchair to shower stool and taking my own time to shower.

Perhaps the best piece of autonomy is being able to wheelchair myself to the bathroom and transition myself onto the toilet in my own time and not be reliant on someone else.

The physios are really great at encouraging us all. It’s amazing how rapidly the muscles waste when you are flat on your back for weeks.

I’m really appreciative of your visits and love to chat.
And I’ll update when I have more news.

Thanks

Lots of milestones passed there with sheer determination.  You can take on Easter Eggs without further training!

Hi Lindsay, and it's great to hear that you are home.   It must be lovely to sleep in your own bed, use your own toilet, and be surrounded by familiar things and people who love and care.   I'm sure that the support while in hospital and rehab are great, the loss of autonomy while you are there is another challenge.

I had coffee with Lindsay yesterday at the Sticks Coffee Shop that is on the ground floor of the building where he lives.
He is going well.
Visitors welcome. Coffee shop open 9:30 to 1:30 Monday to Friday.
Suggest you ring the day before to organize a time.
If you don't have his phone number pm Lindsay or ring or pm me.
Lindsay and May moved to the Rossmoyne Waters a few years ago.
The details here are a little out of date:- https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-32.0452203,115.866596,17z (https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-32.0452203,115.866596,17z) ,
Easy to get to but parking may be a problem as they are just starting new building program.
There is 2 hour parking on Bull Creek Road in front of the admin building. From Bull Creek Rd you walk down Freeman Drive and almost directly into Sticks Cafe.

Just dropping in for an update. :)

I continue to enjoy improvement to my health and strength.

Recently, I received permission to work on regaining my driving. This is because I need to use my left leg for foot control. Last Friday I was given an initial driving assessment of by a specialist OT. I must have done ok because today I received a text indicating that I could book more driving sessions, leading up to a final assessment.

I also, with a number of family members, attended the WA Supreme Court, to witness the sentencing of the perpetrator. I may post a link to the transcript later on when it becomes available.

The perpetrator pleaded guilty to a large number of charges, the main 2 being the manslaughter of Ken and GBH to me.

The outcome was 11 years, with the possibility of parole after 9 years. Also disqualified from driving for 2.75 years.

Nothing will bring Ken back or my leg back. It does bring some closure to this aspect of the journey.

I cannot express how grateful I am for the support I've received from all you guys. You are all amazing people and so supportive of me.

I'll hopefully see you soon, on a ride (drive) :)

I was actually having a re-read of this thread last night and was wondering how you were going so it was a bit of a "surprise" when I found your latest update this morning!  :beer

Thanks for the update Lindsay.  Great to see that you are moving forware on your journey.  It must be great to get back behind the wheel.

You are an inspiration to me, and likely to many others.

Judging from the imposed sentence it sounds like there was a lot more going on in the other vehicle than just innocently losing control of his rig.  It must be good to put that part of the process behind you.

All the best,
Steve

This  last week I had my Mazda CX5 modified for a left foot accelerator from PME Auto Conversions

https://pmeautoconversions.com.au/driving-controls/pedal-modifications/left-foot-accelerators

More details on their website.

This morning I took the car for a drive and I’m really impressed with the conversion. It feels really seamless, as it should.

While the car was being modified, I was at Fiona Stanley hospital getting ready for meeting my new leg next week. I think this is going to be a big challenge, but with lots of encouragement from the team at FSH, as well as fellow amputees, I’m confident…

Lindsay's first weekend back behind the wheel, for me, I think being in Tweed Heads/Coolangatta for the weekend was great timing.  :grin
