Title: Re: Mounting a Bestem 929 Top Box on a ST1100
Post by: Streak on September 18, 2011, 03:25:12 PM
I thought i would lay down my experince of mounting a Bestem 929 Top Box onto my 1996 ST1100.

I purchased mine from Cruiserback rest on EBAY:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ST1100-Bestem-Top-Box-w-Backrest-Trunk-LED-T-box-BLK-/110721972438?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item19c78b38d6#ht_1436wt_905 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ST1100-Bestem-Top-Box-w-Backrest-Trunk-LED-T-box-BLK-/110721972438?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item19c78b38d6#ht_1436wt_905)

It arrived in a matter of days, I purchased mine from the USA, but they had one in Australia, so i got it quickly, and they refunded me the difference in the freight as well, so i was very happy with that!.

after unpacking it, i laid it out on the bench as you can see below in the photo, the 2 brackets on the left i think are for mounting on a scooter, i didint use them but i made use of the 4 bolts and the mounting bracket.

I started by making use of my mate across the road who has every tool known to man in his shed, it was quickly apparent that this brack would need some adjustment to be strong and effective, especially on the rear mounts as it lines up you have to drill though the plate where it is folded for strength, so we welded in some flat plate on both sides.

after lining up the appropriate holes, we decided against adding anything at the front as it would not have the stress the rear would have, I strongly recommend using a dril press or to drill your holes as it is very easy to make a mess if you are not careful!

when we mounted it we thought it best to use sleeves on the bolts as it made it very simple to set it ad the right height, we just used the sleeves that came with the gearsack rack that was on the bike when i bought it. i have tilted the back up slightly so the back rest comes into play for Teela on the back.

After that is was some killrust to make it all pretty

and you can see below the end result, very neat and tidy, and it is not going anyway where!

below is before and after

for what i paid about $140, i think it is very good, it happily holds 2 helmets or a spare helmet and bits and peices, i didnt bother hooking up the brake light.

Cheers

Streak

That setup is about the same as the proper Givi mounting, so well done.  Originally all I wanted was gearsack rack as I have 2 of the bags (the very original vinyl one from the early 80s died a few years ago).  Now I don't mind having the topbox option and using the gearsack in front of it if I need to.

Once Teela crams all her face painting gear into there - you never know what might happen....      ;D

Your fit was more professional than mine, but here goes.

Thanks to Streak, I picked up the Bestem box too (929 T-Box) I will not rub in how much I paid again to get it from their Sydney EBay store (Ooops, I just did). Mine came last Friday. Fitted it over the weekend, and finally remembered to actually post a picture to the site that helped me pick the right one.

I hooked up the brake light on the box to my rear brake lights, easy done, but the wiring diagram provided for my ST1100 by Bestem was incorrect. They had the colours wrong, but it was easy to work out anyway (May be because I have the Police model ST1100PY).
I mounted the box above the pillion handles using some galv steel rod that I cut four 10mm long pieces from. This held the underside of the carrier away from the handles (And provided a secure mount of steel to steel). I also used an idea from the "US" ST site by cutting out a pattern that matched the mounting plate out of an old white nylon cutting board from our kitchen (Well, it was old once I destroyed it with a jigsaw).
As you can see from the picture, I mounted the T Box allowing about 2 cm clearance between the back of the mounting plate and the rear holes I drilled to allow the 8mm bolts to run through from the mounting plate to the bike handle mounts. Note that I also added about 4 thick galv washers between the "rear" holes on the steel plate and the nylon "cutting board", as I found that as I nipped down the rear screws, without the washers, the mounting plate was deforming under the pressure, so the washers "filled" the gap between the rear of the plate and nylon cutting board (so providing a solid fixing without allowing the plate to bend.

Mark (aka Woody)

P.S
The delivery time from Bestems Sydney warehouse is about 3 working days, costing about $50 with Australia Post, but still way cheaper than the RJays that I was actually going to get. It is very solid build, and the brake light is just icing on the cake. I think the box is actually the same unit as the RJays too.

I may have to order one, just to get the brake light.

Woody,

If you want to modify your seat for more comfort, there is a good motor trimmers in Wangarra that does a great job. If you go on the ride to Beverly on saturday you can try mine.

The "Gel" saddleman seat is somewhat firm.

As for the brake light, it isn't as bright as a light house, but I do think it is a nice touch.

I thought that was a saddleman seat, mine was as well. The rear seat is ok, but mine was crap. at the rear near the rise was a 10 or so mm gap that my bum kept sliding back into. Not much fun. Also after a day in the Pearce sun the gel pad was very burny

Testing photobucket

Please humour me.

Some more of the Bestem box fitted. And it looks very much like your RJays box Brock...

When I purchased my ST1100 it had a low cost Chinese box all painted and ready to install.  So I fitted it using the cutting board as Mark did.

(http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah174/ST1100PY/Bestem/IMG_6688_zps68f0333a.jpg) (http://s1380.photobucket.com/user/ST1100PY/media/Bestem/IMG_6688_zps68f0333a.jpg.html)

The catch on the lid broke a few weeks back so it was time to upgrade to a Bestem top box. I took the Chinese box off and left the rails as they were nearly identical to the new ones.

(http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah174/ST1100PY/Bestem/IMG_6696_zps7c834ffa.jpg) (http://s1380.photobucket.com/user/ST1100PY/media/Bestem/IMG_6696_zps7c834ffa.jpg.html)

Previously I had used some ⅜ drive sockets as spacers.  These were a perfect fit into the grab handles, were chrome so not going to rust easily and were a very nice height.  I purchased these out of a SuperCheap Auto's grab box for $1.00 each.  Not bad for chrome spacers.  The bolts fit nicely through the ⅜ drive hole.

(http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah174/ST1100PY/Bestem/IMG_6697_zps7809b24f.jpg) (http://s1380.photobucket.com/user/ST1100PY/media/Bestem/IMG_6697_zps7809b24f.jpg.html)

I then used the mounting plate as an overlay on the cutting board and marked out its shape.  A quick whizz around with a jig saw got the shape in place and then used a belt sander to smooth the edges.  Laying the cutting board on the rails I used a pencil to mark out the rail locations and worked out where the locating bolts needed to be drilled.

(http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah174/ST1100PY/Bestem/IMG_6698_zpsab52ac54.jpg) (http://s1380.photobucket.com/user/ST1100PY/media/Bestem/IMG_6698_zpsab52ac54.jpg.html)

Then I put the metal plate in place and marked out the location of all the existing mounting holes and then selected which 4 holes I would use to tie the plate & cutting board together.

(http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah174/ST1100PY/Bestem/IMG_6704_zpse6f26271.jpg) (http://s1380.photobucket.com/user/ST1100PY/media/Bestem/IMG_6704_zpse6f26271.jpg.html)

I found that the two rear bolts that secured the rails to the cutting board interfered with the plate in the back corners just on the rolled edge where the flat area is pressed into the metal stamping.  To eliminate the interferrance I chose to attack the heads of the bolts with an angle grinder to give the necessary clearance.

(http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah174/ST1100PY/Bestem/IMG_6702_zpscd9c8e79.jpg) (http://s1380.photobucket.com/user/ST1100PY/media/Bestem/IMG_6702_zpscd9c8e79.jpg.html)

Now I could spray the cutting board, the rails, bolt the plate to the cutting board, spray it all again, then attach it to the bike.

(http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah174/ST1100PY/Bestem/IMG_6713_zps3e8ab0d9.jpg) (http://s1380.photobucket.com/user/ST1100PY/media/Bestem/IMG_6713_zps3e8ab0d9.jpg.html)

(http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah174/ST1100PY/Bestem/IMG_6714_zpsdc4d6b45.jpg) (http://s1380.photobucket.com/user/ST1100PY/media/Bestem/IMG_6714_zpsdc4d6b45.jpg.html)

(http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah174/ST1100PY/Bestem/IMG_6715_zps5e409676.jpg) (http://s1380.photobucket.com/user/ST1100PY/media/Bestem/IMG_6715_zps5e409676.jpg.html)

Installed it seems to come up fairly well.

(http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah174/ST1100PY/Bestem/IMG_6711_zpsc1b1eef3.jpg) (http://s1380.photobucket.com/user/ST1100PY/media/Bestem/IMG_6711_zpsc1b1eef3.jpg.html)

(http://i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah174/ST1100PY/Bestem/IMG_6712_zpsb3f46fbb.jpg) (http://s1380.photobucket.com/user/ST1100PY/media/Bestem/IMG_6712_zpsb3f46fbb.jpg.html)

I have not yet wired up the brake light but the previous box was wired so just a little bit of work to do, and it will be all good to go.

Thanks for the PM

Looks good

My 1100 never came with a top case but I had the RJays one which I think is just a generic top case which I had bought for my previous CX500. Two years after getting the 1100 I thought it was about time to fit the case. The easiest way for me was to get the OEM rear rack and mount the case using the supplied mounting plate.

When it came time to replace the case I just mounted the new mounting plate to the rear rack as I did before.
