IBA Rides
« on: November 29, 2014, 03:49:37 PM »
While Lionel is out there munching through IBA Rides out there there's been some discussion about what rides/s he might be doing.  Given there's a bunch of OzStoc IBA'ers now I thougt I'd post the list that was compiled by Ziggy that a few of us use.  Might be some inspiration in here somewhere and if there's any missing feel free to add them in. The mile ones are in the list, just be aware the on most occasions we'll ride the kilometre based ones where possible.  Just remember it's a guide.

I'm prett sure the Dusty Butt 1000 hasn't been certified here. Some Heidenau K60's on the ST Maybe?
The BunBurner GOLD 3000 has been done once by Ziggy
Tasmania-Darwin Express once by TJ (going off memory here, feel free to correct me TJ)
Australia Southern Cross done once by Peter Hogan

There are two more rides I thought of as well that I'm not too clear on

Western Australia End to End Gold Challenge- Albany WA to Wyndham WA in less than 48 hours 2460 miles

Another ride/ Peter Hogan (OX-34) rode but I'm not sure what the name of it is Loco CoCo and or Crooked Coast to Coast
that was a Newcastle - Darwin 50 hours and another Newcastle, Darwin, Newcastle 100hrs.

Remember though, the list represents things you can tick off.  You can design your own rides, name them and get them certified like the ones in this reply.  That's part of the fun!

You are correct.

Interestingly enough the certification of both Km and Mile rides here in Oz is a bit special as I believe that we are one (if not the only one, I could be wrong) of the few countries that are allowed to do this.  Not sure on the IBA (Mike Kneebone) reasoning but I am aware that Mike would prefer Km based rides.

The idea of getting out there and coming up with a ride is fantastic.  Please remember though that just because you went and did a ride to establish a new one it does not guarantee that it will be verified.

The Australian Southern Cross is an interesting one for me personally at the moment.  When Peter completed it and had it recognised as an IBA ride he actually included Byron Bay and Denham in it.  Now because he did that it took the 9 days, the ride proper, without Byron Bay and Denham,  takes 6 days (well it did for me), so still trying to have this ride clarified.  There have been a few others that have completed this ride but have not gone down the road of verification for there own personal reasons.

....and a little more history on the Trans Australia and Insanity version (I have posted this in another topic as well but thought it would be good here)

There is an interesting story behind the Trans Australia and Insanity version, the ride being established by Davo Jones.  Originally recognised by the IBA as a SS10000K.  Davo wrote about it as the "first transcontinental" crossing of Oz on a new Kawasaki that he was loaned by the company.  The story can be found here http://www.ironbutt.com/rides/Trans%20AustraliaDavo.htm it is worth the read.

In recognition of Davo and what he had done for the Long Distance Riding community here in Australia,  The name was changed from a SS10000K to the current title.

....and a bit on the Tasmanian-Darwin Express.  What makes this one a bit more interesting is that it includes the ferry crossing.  The distance covered on the ferry does not count but the time does.  Make sure your timing a good to get from the bottom of Tas and up to the ferry. Add a bit more excitement by coming from the mainland, heading straight down to the bottom of Tas then doing a turnaround to make it back in time for the crossing.  Last bit of excitement for this one is to hope that the ferry does not have a delay.

....and here is a bit about the SS4000K.

Established more for a training ride than anything else.  Training for what?  well if you are interested in doing a CC50 and not sure if your butt or constitution is prepared for it then this is a ride for you.  You do not have to go from one side of Oz to the other (which is what 4000K will give you and a bit more), head out from your preferred start point and complete the distance in a circle or square or zig zag etc then arrive back at home or anywhere else that you wish.  This one is about getting to know a bit more about yourself and if you can handle the distance of a CC50 and to give you the added bit of confidence that attempt that ride.  You also do not have the pressure of the less than 50hrs of the CC50, again giving you an opportunity of seeing how your timings are should you want to attempt the Coast to Coast.

I see the CC50 is listed as

"Australia 50cc GOLD Finishers (Sydney/Brisbane to Perth (Fremantle) under 50 hours)"

and nowhere else except for Melbourne to Darwin.

Isn't there just a CC50 and then the Gold is in 48 hours?

or is it always designated "Gold" because it's longer to cross east/west than south/north (and vice versa)?

50CC Gold is East West (or vice versa).  50CC is north south or vice versa.  No prizes for doing either in less than 50 hours. Wtihout getting too far into it, it's just the difference in the distance involved that makes it gold or not. For the North - South the Darwin end is simple, I understand that people have used St Kilda?? or at Bells Beach/Torquay in the South.

Then Brisbane - Freemantle should be Platinum because it's 437 km further than Sydney - Freemantle (which is identical to Newcastle - Freeo)!

Nope, Brisbane would just be a poor choice of starting location for a Gold if you didn't think you had the extra k's in you. :whistle.  As I understand it the distances for Gold or otherwise were set based on the lengths of US 50CC rides. But over there they can be all done on Interstates so those extra k's are not so tough. You brissies also have a shortcut across if you don't mind a little bit of dirt and sand here and there, that way is longer for us  :rofl

Now there is an interesting story.  Davo did the Brisbane to Fremantle ride to set the standard for the 50CC Gold, Mike decided that anywhere north of Sydney deserved the Gold, more than likely for the reasons stated by Wombattle.  For me it was Freemantle to Coffs Harbour.

How does one do this ride in 24 hours without exceeding the speed limit?

Australia Centreline 24 Finishers (Port Augusta to Darwin under 24 hours 2,724km - 1,692 miles):

That distance gives an average speed 113.5 K/h non stop.....and that doesn't take into account fuel/food or nature stops.

SaddleSore 4000 Finishers (4,000 miles in 4 days): I've done this distance in 3.5 days (3 night stops) long before I heard of LD riding or even Ozstoc......but I didn't see it as anything spectacular or special as it was just a ride to get back home for Xmas day. Totally buggered is what I felt, not saddle sore.........lol

Thanks Brookster, like Biggles it did look a bit wrong  :thumb

Alan, that's one of the best parts of LDRiding is working out what your speed requirement is going to be in specific parts of the road, keeping in mind the state or territory speed limits and as you mentioned refueling etc.  An auxiliary tank helps as does your timing for the compulsory refuel at a bowser. It can and has been done  :thumb

your 4000 miles in 3.5 days works out at around 74Kph non stop, which is around average for a SS1600k in 24Hrs.  Well done  :thumbs

"How does one do this ride in 24 hours without exceeding the speed limit?"

Centreline (Gold) 2722 kms in 24 hrs (Port Augusta to Darwin or vice versa)

Essentially, there are three main speed limits between Port Augusta and Darwin.
1. Port Augusta to Alice Springs (approx 1225 kms) is 110 km/h.
2. Just north of Alice Springs there is a 322 + km stretch (actually, 2 separate bits) of no speed limit.
3. The remaining 1175 kms (1497 - 322) has a speed limit of 130 km/h

Travelling Times
Setting the cruise control on 110 km/h for 1225 kms the time taken will be 11.136364 hours (11:09).
Setting the cruise control on 160 km/h for 322 kms the time taken will be 2.0125 hours (2:01).
Setting the cruise control on 130 km/h for 1175 kms the time taken will be 9.0384615 hours (9:03).
Total 22:13

Fuel Stops
My tank has a capacity of 25 litres plus 12.5 litre aux fuel tank, total 37.5 (say 36 litres usable)
Three fuel stops will be required for the 1225 kms @ 110 km/h (Coober Pedy, Marla and Alice Springs). You need to stop where the petrol stations are; not where theoretical distances dictate.
One fuel stop will be required at Barrow Creek (Davenport on Google Maps) 322 kms @ 160 km/h
Three fuel stops will be required for the remaining 1175 kms (Tennant Creek, Daly Waters, Katherine)
Seven fuel stops at 12 mins per stop = 1:24

My allowance of 12 mins allows me to drop speed at the "one-horse" towns, refuel and get back up to speed again. Other riders, for example, Ox, Wombattle and Skidoooo, take less time for refuelling.

However, Alice Springs takes me about 12 mins to traverse, in addition to the refuelling time.

Add 5 mins at Port Augusta to get on the bike after getting your docket and 5 mins in Darwin to run into the servo to get an ATM receipt. Total 10 mins.

Total time = 22:13 (travelling) + 1:24 (7 fuel stops) + 0:12 (travelling through Alice Springs) + 0:10 (start and finish) = 23:59. That leaves 1 min spare to change a flat tyre, etc.

Centreline (Gold) done and dusted (twice)

Don't try this on a "small" bike.

TJ, I stand corrected.

I am so focussed on achieving a Mile Eater GOLD award before my toes point to Heaven that I think of all my IBA rides as being Gold level or not.

For those who do not know what I'm talking about, here is an extract from the IBA web site.

"GOLD status is earned by completing at least TWENTY certified rides, of which FIVE must be GOLD or INSANITY level or greater than 48 hours in duration without a time limitation (you can earn GOLD status over several years)."

But wait, there's more. Just as I accumulate sufficient GOLD level rides the IBA creates even more challenging awards. The next level is Platinum.

"PLATINUM status is earned by completing at least FORTY certified rides, of which TEN must be GOLD or INSANITY level or greater than 48 hours in duration without a time limitation (you can earn PLATINUM status over several years)."

Additional levels are at: http://www.ironbutt.com/mileeater/
