Wanted - ST1100 Engine Crankcase
« on: January 25, 2021, 06:14:26 PM »
It will be a while before I get an opportunity to put my ST1100AY back together but decided I will continue accumulating all the replacement parts I will need. I stripped down my engine to find that the bearing shell holder had fretted with pickup so I am now on the hunt for a new crankcase (upper and matching lower).

The challenge I have is that whenever I come across an engine from a salvage yard they refuse to strip it down and remove the shell bearings for photos. I can understand that though for walk in buyers or someone who can return

Anyway, I thought I would put the wanted message up in case someone ends up breaking an ST1100 engine at some point ! The fretting issue is most likely more common than discussed

Thx Steve

There may be an issue, but as I have never heard of anyone doing an engine split I am unaware of any issues.

try this place, https://www.motorcyclemasters.com.au/ when the police started using 1100's they had the contract and bought 3 spare engines a couple of years ago they still had them in crates, probably still now.

So at what age does this "old enough to know better" kick in?

I thought I was in luck, just found a split crankcase in UK but closer inspection found the exact same problem on No.1 main bearing shell holder, a V shape pick up in the middle of the bottom shell. I can see this will become a bit of a crusade but then again I have plenty of time to spend researching at the moment.

I'm thinking I need to find a specialist motorcycle engine machine shop to talk to because its at the limit of my experience

Today I contacted a local wrecker with an engine but he wants to sell it complete.  I will keep looking.

Do you have some photos of the issue so I can understand a bit better what the issue is?

Here are some photos of the shell bearing holders (ie shell bearings removed) showing the pickup problem caused by main shells fretting in the holders, from memory the worst is No.1 bearing and I think the other was No.3 bearing (with No2 being okay)

The third photo (No.1 bearing) actually has a crack and this is something I am seeing on the photos of other used crankcases
