Crash bars front
« on: December 30, 2015, 12:14:25 PM »
Has anyone fitted front crash bars to the ST?  I had them on my FJR and was thinking of fitting them on the ST. I'm not sure if it is feasible.

MCL make ones that go behind the pillion pegs.

The MCL ones work great and give you a place to use as a strap tie down as well when your carting extra gear

I had a look at the MCL website and could only find the bars for the rear panniers. Is there any available for the front? these are the bars that I found on the website.

Well, the front crash bars are standard on both 1100s and 1300s and are covered by replaceable plastic.....It's the little wing each side on the fairing.

Basically, there are no aftermarket crash bars for the front of the 1100 or 1300.

As far as I know, there is no practical way to mount them anyway.

You mean like these;

Recon I could make up a set, although I would make them out of stronger tube.
Something like this;

Reminds me of equipment used by Ghostbusters.     :grin

Obviously more "out there" than the factory tip-over bars.

Looks to me that one could change plugs and oil without removing any bolt/nut of the crash bars on a number of these examples . .

Covers need to come off on the 1100 and even then replacing the rear plugs is only just possible. Might be able to manage refilling the oil with the cover in place but it might depend on the length of any funnel you might use but the RH cover needs to come off on the 1100A to access the coolant reserve tank which is located behind the fairing hole at the rear of the RH wing.

That area around the wing is quite solid as per roo strike event back in June 2008.

I wasn't suggesting the service covers need not be removed, I have serviced my ST1100 many times, however it looks to me that one can possibly undo the fasteners for the service cover and slide it around/along/rotate the cover around/along the crash bar to give access to the plugs, oil and water fillers . . .

With iridium plugs fitted, most servicing would only entail the removal of the right hand cover to replace the oil.

I rarely need to top up radiator fluid and only change at required intervals . . On my Police version Topping up only requires the removal of the R/H pannier, seat and R/H side cover, I believe with the ABS version,  topping up the coolant is done through the maintenance opening.

Certainly having to remove any crash bars would add a couple of minutes to the minute required to remove the service cover . .
