Are you a loner?
« on: April 28, 2013, 11:33:28 AM »
Jean makes some interesting points about encouraging partners to the back seat of the ST.

Unfortunately, I get the feeling I will always by alone on my bike.  :'(

When I have a son who'd rather be out with his mates, a daughter who thinks it's embarrassing to be on the bike, a wife worried about helmet-hair, & jibes about "that thing in the garage" from all 3, I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that this situation won't change any time soon.

Am I the only one?

My experience goes the other way.........When Heather's four granddaughters first saw my CX500 (b4 1100) they all wanted a ride. Ages 8 to 14. Had trouble getting the 10 yr old off so she managed to get two rides. The boys showed no interest.

My daughter has been on the bike as well but not to keen. Even my daughter in law requested her first ride on a bike ever when the 1100 came into my possession.

Heather's brothers had bikes and grew going for rides with them so taking Heather isn't an issue.

Hey Rob, I'm sure that you not alone. I know that Chris has other hobbies that he enjoys that he would like me to participate in eg. Shooting, but it just doesnt interest me. Just like Chris dislikes being dragged into the changing rooms when I'm on a shopping mission.  :rofl

You mentioned the helmet hair issue, which I don't enjoy either, but I found a solution in a silk head sock that can be used in a number of different ways. The sock can be used from everything to a balaclava to a bandana and even a neck warmer and a mask if it is dusty or cold.

Perhaps a deal could be done between you and your wife, look at a hobby or interest that you both have and don't share and perhaps a little "I'll try yours, if you try mine approach", may set the wheels in motion.

Good luck.

My wife's not THAT keen on going pillion. She's Thai and thinks they're dangerous seeing as she knows of numerous people who were killed on bikes in Thailand................I know, I know, I've been through the "Every type of transport's dangerous in Thailand" discussion.....................

My granddaughter on the other hand loves them. She's 9. We have intercom in the helmets, I particularly remember pulling out into traffic and accelerating heavily from a stand-still, and hearing Chloe say (to herself really) "Go Poppy, Go!" Needless to say, that brought a huge grin to my face.

why did I think it was a space for the ladies and pillions?

Umm.  No idea.  It's proposed by a rider who can't find a pillion in his family.

Missus Biggles isn't mad keen, but doesn't mind the occasional outing.  Since the hip replacement she makes a meal out of getting off the bike- getting on seems easier.  She's also pretty much a coffee-shop traveller.

For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

I'm in the same boat, wife hates bikes no kids interested.I love riding on my own though.
My eldest daughter got her learners permit and bought a suzuki gs 500, then lost interest.
If anyone wants to buy a good suzuki 500 I know where ones going for a good price.

Until I met Teela, I thought I would always be a loner rider myself, as no one had ever displayed any interest in coming with me outside of my daughter who is still to young.

Teela does not get to come with me as often as I like because of work, but I love it when she does, regardless if it is a longer or shorter trip.

But in saying that I don't mind having the bike to myself either, no one threatens to beat me it's a helmet if I am scraping pegs up a mountain or something  :rofl

I'm lucky enough to have 2 teenagers who love the bike. My daughter nags to go for rides, certainly doesn't like it if I'm out for a ride and leave her at home.

Mine's solo seated because the missus doesn't want to ride on the back..... she rides on the front on her own bike.

Although mines not a solo seat, I am most times on the bike alone. Like Bikebear my Wife didn't want to ride on the back. So she learnt to ride went to Qride for lessons and assessment and now has her restricted licence (basically up to 650) and is now Mastering the 800cc Suzuki for her full Qld Motorcycle licence.

Love being a "loner".

For FarRides and IBA rides, wouldn't have it any other way!

Friends always ask if the missus goes with.......I say.... that's who I'm trying to get away from!....... :crackup :crackup :crackup :crackup

She's of the impression that there has to be one of us to raise the daughter. :o

No doubt she WILL join me once the bird has flown the nest...... :thumbs :clap

Theresa is always happy to ride as pillion with me. After she did the Cairns to Darwin leg on my round the block ride Theresa now would like to ride with me across the Nullabor.

There's a story here, that I've clearly missed out on.......     :popcorn
Anyone care to enlighten me?

Much of my riding is on my own, but my OzLap was with good mates who ride Harleys, and I've traveled Tassie several times and much of Victoria and the Snowy's with the dearly beloved on the back.    She's a great pillion and I love having her with me, but some I have carried have been shockers.

I would check out St Georges report on pillioning to Ballarat with Johnny.

Anyway, I used to carry a pillion a lot years ago on the of Suzuki.  All the camping gear on of off the rallies over gravel roads and whatever.  The Suzuki was a great pillion bike with one of the best seats I have ridden on.  After that sad little part of my life I am a lone rider, perhaps with a few others.  If I get anyone interested to go on the back I am sure you will find out sometime.

Loner here as well.

Missus  is quite unco and finds it difficult to even get on it.  Going on a ride with 4 other couples tomorow and it would be nice to have a pillion but it is not worth getting divorced over.

I acknowledge hardworking Australians no matter who they are or where they come from. All those who have contributed to this wonderful country deserve an equal share of gratitude for their contributions. To single any group of individuals out for special homage only denigrates the rest of us.

I'm pretty much a loner and quite like it that way, especially on overnight trips where I can throw my duffel bag on the pillion seat.  I've had Mrs Glimt as a pillion on short trips to collect her after putting the car in for a service but that's pretty much about it.
